Article: Twins Minor League Report (6/5): Trevor Larnach is Good at Hitting

Over the course of the past three days, the Twins have selected 41 players in their 2019 draft. Likely around 25 of them will sign in the next month. Just a couple more weeks before the short-seasons begin. By the way, Trevor Larnach just continues to rake. He had a big game on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Wings played a really complete game. A top prospect had a strong game for the Kernels, but it wasn’t enough.Find out everything that happened happened in the Twins system on Wednesday, starting with the transactions of the day.

The Midwest League announced their All-Stars on Wednesday morning. Three Kernels made the team. Chris Williams was named the starting DH. 1B Gabe Snyder and RHP Josh Winder were named as reserves.

RED WINGS REPORT

Rochester 6, Syracuse 2

The Red Wings played a morning game on Wednesday. Lewis Thorpe got the start. He had eight strikeouts, but he went just 4 1/3 innings. He gave up just one run on five hits and a walk. Ryan Eades came on and struck out three over the next 2 1/3 innings. He didn’t allow a run. He gave up two hits and a walk. Trevor Hildenberger gave up a solo homer in his inning. Preston Guilmet got the final four outs to record his sixth save of the year.

 

The Red Wings got on the board in the fourth inning when Jake Cave knocked his third home run since joining the Red Wings, a two-run homer. A sixth-inning double by Brent Rooker scored two more runs. They added some ninth-inning insurance with an RBI double by Luis Arraez and a single from Jake Cave.

 

Arraez went 3-for-5 and the double was his first with the Red Wings. Cave went 2-for-4 and drove in the three runs. Brent Rooker was 2-for-4 and was hit by a pitch. His double was his seventh of the season. Zander Wiel went 1-for-2, walked twice and was hit once..

Because of some wet field conditions, the game was postponed. There will be a doubleheader on Thursday.

 

Jordan Gore and Jaylin Davis took advantage of the conditions.

 

 

MIRACLE MATTERS

Ft. Myers 4, Florida 6

Tyler Watson started and gave up three earned runs on five hits and two walks over the first five innings. He struck out three. However, he started the game with five scoreless innings. The sixth inning got to Watson and the Miracle. Hector Lujan came on in relief and allowed an inherited runner to score. In his two innings he gave up three runs on six hits. Alex Phillips threw two scoreless innings to close out the game, though he did allow an inherited runner to score.

 

Trevor Larnach hasn’t slowed down much in June. On this day he went 3-for-3 with two walks and two more doubles. He now has 19 doubles on the season. He also stole his third base. Aaron Whitefield stole his 17th base of the season. Jose Miranda hit his second homer of the season for the Miracle.

 

KERNELS NUGGETS

Gilberto Celestino hit his sixth double and his fourth home run of the season, but the solo home run was not enough as the Kernels fell 2-1. The Kernels had just two other hits, both singles.

 

Austin Schulfer started for the Kernels. He gave up two runs on six hits over five innings. He struck out six without issuing a walk. Brian Rapp and Moises Gomez combined for three scoreless innings.

It feels like Larnach is having the year Kiriloff did last year. Perhaps he'd make for a key trade piece since his stock has got to be high right now...

Based on the draft I'm preemptively awarding the Appy League champtionship to E-town.  Seems like they win most of the time anyways, guess they wanted to make sure this year.

I have to throw some cold water on the Larnach love, as he has slowed down since May--his 1.040 OPS in June is down from 1.075 in May.

 

In all seriousness, he's now up to an .873 OPS in the pitcher-friendly FSL as a 22 year old.  I expect him to stay there through July so as not to risk a dip in his numbers at AA, leaving his trade value unaffected (unless of course Falvine thinks of him as untouchable).  If Lewis doesn't string a couple of good months together, Larnach will be nipping at his heels in the prospect rankings.

I think he (and maybe Royce and Lewin) move up after the FSL All Star game. Scouts aren't going to view any of them differently if they struggle in their debut money of AA.

I think he's already there. The problem is the major league team needs pitching help. The Twins have depth at C and OF, especially LHB corner OF. True impact pitchers are going to be expensive mid-season. 

 

That said, I'd hate to see any of the top 5 prospects go for rentals.

The DSL Twins won 9-1, putting the organization at 2-3 for the day.  Urbina took the day off after his first 0 fer day on Tuesday.

 

Really like what that trio, Arraez, Cave and Rooker, are doing at Rochester as they edge towards .500 (still 11 games under).  Lots of good in Thorpe's start yesterday, like 8 K's and no home runs.  Gotta get further into games before he will be ready to join the Twins.

 

Imagine there is an open spot in Pensacola as long as Kirilloff is on the IL.  Could Larnach move up soon?  And another nice start for the Kernels from the kid who hails from the Stevens Point area.

It will take a very low dip in numbers for Lewis to drop below Larnach.  SS are always ranked higher, because it is premium position, and they can always move to others, where corner OF can only do that, 1B or DH.  Hitting is not only thing that ranks prospects.  That being said, it is good problem to have with all the OF talent in the system right now, some will get flipped for sure.

I think Larnach is putting himself up a notch. I think he's still tradeable (we have OF depth, Kirilloff is still higher on the prospect list even with the return to the injury list) but he's not going for a rental. he's not going for just an ok relief piece. He's showing a dominant hit tool and you don't give that up as anything other than the centerpiece of a major deal.

Hildenberger. Another AAA inning with a walk, a K, and a homer. Looks like even AAA isn't fooled anymore, either.

 

Those are all some pretty horrible season ERAs in the Rochester box this game.

Lewis is two years younger than Larnach. Has shown success. Has much higher-ceiling tools. Plays a more valuable defensive position. 

 

That's not to say that  there are no concerns about Lewis's start, but I don't think anyone has any long-term concerns about him.
