Game Thread: Twins @ Red Sox, 6:10pm cdt, 7/26/2018ad

Recommended Posts

King of game threads, and game thread to the Kings. (same movie referenced further down, and left as an exercise to the descerning game threader, but it is a half hearted attempt to establish a theme... And my humble apologies for the stepping on toes, but i see it is an open date in Chief's ol' list, and it being day of, and considering the newish freedom, i figure forgiveness the better part of permission... or something)

1. For some reason i remember watching a Boston baseball game on the telly long ago, and they highlighted local celebrity types. And the one that stuck was the somewhat prolific author Stephen King. I think technically he is from Maine, which used to be Massachusetts back in the day. I kinda just assumed they split off due to under representation. Or maybe taxes. There was a lot of that going round back then.

1eh. Maximum Overdrive. Just figured that deserved special mention as the movie what King was involved with.

1bee. I leave it to the reader to identify the relevence of King's work to the Twins current season, if there is one.

2. The emperor's new closer. It just sounded good. But in all seriousness, Morrison is back. Santana is back. Even Polanco is back. We are getting the team back together. The obvious conclusion is that we must be on a mission from God. Not sure if it has anything to do with taxes... But we'll never get Mr. Fabulous back, will we? And we need that fat sound... Er, i mean bat sound, of course.

Anyway, i'd like to place an order for 4 fried chickens and a coke!

3. The Twins key to victory today is that the pellet with the poison is in the flagon with the dragon. The vessal with the pestle has the brew that is true.

4. "You have reached Joe Mauer's cellphone." I can't talk now because the season's on and i am focussing on the ball. But if you leave your name and number and a brief message, i'll get back to you after the season ends."

Hi this is sampleSizeOfOne. No need to get back, i'm just making an homage, and don't really know the other Joe M's. Please keep the season going as long as possible.

5. But if this series or season doesn't quite go my way... I'll just ponder the following quote..."Sure i could have stayed there. Maybe even been King. But in my own way, i am King." -an S-mart sales person.

Twins | 47-53 overall, 18-31 on the road, 6-4 in their last 10

Kyle Gibson, RHP | 4-7, 3.57 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 2.48 K:BB

Red Sox | 71-32 overall, 34-13 at home, 7-3 in their last 10

Brian Johnson, LHP | 1-3, 3.81 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 2.76 K:BB

Lineups:

(Will update once available)

Additional notes:

Wow, take a look at that record for Boston. They’re on pace to win something like 112 games. The Red Sox own the best team OPS (.795) in all of baseball and their team ERA (3.56) ranks fourth. They’ve got four of the top 15 players in the American League (Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez, Andrew Benintendi and Xander Bogaerts) and three of the top 20 pitchers in the AL (Chris Sale, Rick Porcello and Eduardo Rodriguez) in terms of fWAR.

As fans looking from the outside in and realizing the combination of incredibly long odds of making the playoffs combined with how many pending free agents the Twins have, I think the majority of us have long accepted the fact the Twins were going to be sellers. But, to this point the front office has made no moves, and I’m sure the guys in the clubhouse aren’t throwing in the towel just yet, especially after their sweep at Toronto.

The Twins are theoretically still in the playoff race, sitting 7.5 games behind Cleveland, but this series should serve as a great measuring stick against an elite team. Boston’s longest losing streak this season is three games, and they’ve only lost back-to-back games on seven occasions this year, so a series win for Minnesota would be quite a statement.

If Paul Molitor and his team want to prove to the decision makers that they’ve got what it takes to make a run, here’s their opportunity. The 2017 Twins had a knack for coming up big when their backs were against the wall. It’ll be fun to see how this group responds.

Boston is no 112 win team!  Hello regression!  Here's to Dozier, Polanco, and Kepler finishing the season the way Bogaerts, Benintendi, and Martinez started...and them finishing the way the other guys started.  (Not holding out hope Buxton and Betts go Bizarro.)

or

They are who we said they were!

(Brian Johnson would normally be a nondescript, ho-hum everyman name.  EXCEPT FOR AC/DC!)

Cleveland has the day off, so ground can be made, or lost, but not maintained.

Sorry sSOO, I didn't realize we had a volunteer for today's thread. Thankfully somebody merged these together and now we have a two-headed monster of a game thread. But it's less like the one on Sesame Street and more like Zaphod Beeblebrox from Hitchhiker's Guide ...

I defer to beg...

I haven't checked a Boston area forecast yet, as i didn't think line ups were up so i slacked on one of the official game thread details, folk probably wouldn't notice me slacking on another, but being local, i know an out doors concert has been rescheduled to be in its rain location, so there is some chance of a rain out.

Bonus points for "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" reference.

No worries, mate!

I think i volunteered indirectly, but right about the time things were being rethought, and was not formally been hitched to the game thread cart. My apologies for not getting it out earlier, as i'd taken a nap after writing most of it, deliberating how best to deal with it.

Kudos to the two headed references too!

Been ninja'd!

I feel for the bowl of petunias...

Could have reached back into Roman mythology and used a "Janus" reference I suppose.

I'm setting the over/under on balls Mauer bounces off of the Green Monster during this four-game series at 2.5.  Place your bets, all bets here!

Zero, as they are all going over the Green Monster. Did I do that right? What did I win?

I'll take the over and bet the Pohlad family farm...what there's no farm in the family history? Ok, I'll bet the royalties from Brokeback Mountain syndication

a ridiculously under rated move, imo.

Indeed.  And always a difficult find at the video store.  I actually finally rewatched it with my kids not too long ago, on a pirate DVD loaned from a friend.

In preparation for the Top Gun reboot, I've been catching up on Peak Kilmer-era movies, of which Willow may be the tops.  Tombstone did not age well for me, especially after watching the Hateful 8--a Kurt Russell gunslinger movie that intentionally goes over the top.  "You tell em I'm coming, and hell's coming with me!" is still great as a meme, or gif, but in the context of the movie, I cringed at the cheesiness.

You know, it didn't occur to me till today that I could very well have umpired baseball games that Kepler played in Germany as a kid.  I umpired a ton of youth baseball from younger kids all the way till high school kids and even some games with older players.  And I umpired all over Germany in the summers of 2005 and 2006.

I'll take the over, because I don't want any regrets.

At the game with ashburysteven. As far down the left field line as you can get without being on top of the Monster.

Enjoy it!

I'm gonna go a-busking for perhaps an hour or so, then sneek into a bar for the remainder of the game.

Remember to duck should someone hit a long foul ball down the line!
