T(win)s: After nearly a decade of mediocrity, do you see the Twins being able to sustain some success past this season? Solid team, solid farm, new management, and minimal long term contracts all add up to promising future.

Avatar Jay Jaffe: They have a nice core of young talent, and this regime’s move from the team’s decades-long addiction to pitch-to-contact types seems promising, for sure.

Justin
1:05 A couple of years ago you correctly predicted the twins regression after a hot start to the season, any thoughts on the team this year?
Keith Law
1:06 Legit. I said this winter I thought they were a more likely contender than people thought. Granted, I don't think they hit 400 homers this year or whatever they're projected to hit, but I do think they are a 90+ win team.

Kevin
1:18 Buxton looks like a bust for former #1 prospect. Why everyone projects he will hit for average and power in the minors?
Keith Law
1:18 Buxton has a 111 wRC+ and 1.6 fWAR already this year. Did you type this question in February and only hit send today?

Joe
1:40 Martin Pérez? Real or fake?
Keith Law
1:41 I think the breakout is real. Using that cutter like a third of the time (HT to Aaron Gleeman for tweeting that stat) and it's a legit weapon for him - especially since his lack of a real average breaker was always a problem.

Lol ... I love Keith Law's response to these types of fans/posters

This was on an Angels fan site after the sweep.

It's a short article, but if you want to skip to the bottom you will find that the effort was worth it.

Right below where it says,

"If you missed this game, you are in luck. Here is a pitching recap in gif format:"

Pretty quickly the major league club has moved off the bottom of the league in terms of K%...but only to the top of the bottom half (still ranked only 18th or so). Meanwhile, I don't see anything on the farm that's going to move that needle anytime soon. I don't consider that corner having been turned yet. And that might be what Jaffe means by 'promising' rather than 'outstanding' or even 'good'.

https://fantasy.fangraphs.com/brad-johnsons-10-bold-predictions-for-2019/

Came across this article today of this fangraphs writer predicting Martin Perez to be the Twins best SP this season (before the season began).  After reading that prediction and some others (Renfroe 40 HR) that were seemingly crazy bold but are panning out.... we have to ask ourselves... is this guy a savant?

What are his other predictions for future breakouts?  I want this guy's crystal ball.

He also likes Trevor May as a top-10 closer, and Willians to get 500 PA. Book it! :)

I have no idea why people say the Twins aren't talked about, or respected....

Melchez
3:58 How about a shout out to the Twins?  Best record in  baseball and hardly anyone knows.
Steve Adams
3:59 I don't think it's true at all that no one knows. They're pretty highly talked about throughout the game and here at MLBTR as well. Jeff just wrote like 1500 words on how good the Polanco/Kepler extensions look, too:

Big Show
4:09 Twins played nothing but terrible teams so far, theyre just the new Mariners, nothing to see here.
Steve Adams
4:10 The Twins won their season series against the Astros.

When the Mariners had their hot start last year their run differential was +13. The Twins are at +110 right now, which is the best in the Majors by 20 runs.
4:11 Seven games against the Astros isn't all that telling, but it kind of flies in the face of the notion that they can't beat a good team.
4:12 And their run differential is tough to ignore.

Maybe they're not *this* good, but they're much better than last year's Mariners were, and they're going to add pieces to this club now that they have a 10-game lead in the ALC.

I have not listened yet....Twins' talk starts around minute 31.

https://blogs.fangraphs.com/effectively-wild-episode-1381-minnesota-surprise/

It's a really good ~40 min listen.  I think it's a fair and accurate summary and portrays the team in a very positive light in all aspects--our front office, our coaching staff, our players, and our philosophy.

I'd recap further, but it's worth the listen.  Don't skim this one.

J 1:50 I know we're mostly on the draft tip today, but thoughts on Devin Smeltzer and Zack Plesac moving forward this season?

Also, is Smeltzer-Plesac an 80's jazz fusion band, or a chemical company?

Keith Law
1:50 I'm in on Plesac - had him 14th in Cleveland's system last year, talked him up as a possible starter - less so on Smeltzer, who seems like a reliever to me.

Eric
1:57 Byron Buxton is fun and awesome. No question, just wanted to remind everyone.
Keith Law
1:57 I agree. One of the most exciting players to watch today.
Hell, the Twins are *fun* as a whole.
