Who is this Colabello cat? he is in almost every metric! I don't think I have ever heard of him...

He's the story of the year, in my opinion in the organization. The Twins signed him this spring. He's 28 years old and has been playing independent league baseball since playing in college. He's never played affiliated ball before. The Twins had a few holes to fill this spring and signed him. No bonus, just an opportunity. I'd say he's taking advantage of it.

Great rundown, Seth. I'm sure this took a long time to compile!

 

A little more on Colabello, for those that are just finding out about him: tall and lanky, not too fast. Power to all fields (had a walk-off opposite field homer just a week or two ago at New Britain Stadium). Doubles machine. His dad was a baseball star in Italy (pitched for Italy in the 1984 Olympics), and Chris spent part of his childhood there.

 

Chris' family comes to many of the games in New Britain. I have met his dad -- a super nice guy. They are thrilled at Chris' opportunity this season.

 

Seth is right -- this move was just supposed to minor league depth, but Colabello has batted for a much higher average than I (or probably anyone else) expected. He currently leads the Eastern League in doubles and RBIs, and has been one of the more consistent hitters for the Rock Cats.

 

Definitely, in my opinion, the story of the year for the Twins. And just a great personal story about not giving up on your dream.

Today's Pioneer Press had a really good article about Colabello. It talks about how good of a defensive 1B he is. It would be a great story for him to be a September call-up and I'm sure he would clear waivers at the end of the year, but I think he adds something to this organization that you almost don't want to take that risk. You could probably find a AAAA 1B to fill a role next year, but I'd rather Colabello just be AAAs guy (depending on how the Morneau/Parmelee situation plays out).

I dont even know if I buy that you'ld be forced to DFA him at end of yr. He, if Justin is dealt like many think & Parm takes over, could see some time in 2013 as backup 1B to lefty hitting Parm...part-time DH (Doumit WAY more effective as a lefty) and as power hitting PH

Very least, he starts 2013 as starting 1B for AAA team....wherever it is

 

Another Pioneer article on Hicks states that the decison on Aaron isnt set yet (recall him in Sept). Ryan is heading down to see him again soon. He is playing winter ball tho. There is hope!!!

Collabello is a great story, and I can see the Twins resigning him and trying him at AAA next year, assuming Parmelee isn't back there with Morneau staying put. There is no need to call him up and "waste" a 40-man spot, just to designate him for reassignment. He is, right now, what he is...backup in the minors. I would give him a good look at spring training and hope that he can handle AAA pitching and maybe give him a cup of coffee next year. On a side note: I do wish the Twins were more inclined to do stuff like this September. Remember Jacque Jones...what a thrill it would've been to bring him back as a September callup, for example. If there was one legacy from the Griffith-era, Calvin was great for calling up vets to get them that little extra service time.

What is the thinking on Danny Santana as a prospect at shortstop? The Twins (if everything goes according to plan) basically have an entire team of decent to good prospects 1-3 years away from the bigs (C-Herrmann, 1B-Parm, 2B-Rosario, 3B-Sano, LF-Benson, RF-Hicks, OF/DH-Arcia) except for short. While I am one of those who thinks Dozier can become a perfectly acceptable player there, if he should not pan out, we really don't seem to have that stand-out prospect.

 

Florimon would be ok as a 9 hitter playing elite defense, Beresford has been somewhat frisky at NB this year, and Levi has been something of a disappointment in his first go-around--is Danny Santana a possible #1 shortstop prospect?

I like Santana, had him in my Top 20 at mid-season. He's not in the category of the other guys, but he's really fast and has a tremendous arm. He hates walking, this is the first year he's batted for enough batting average to post a.300 OBP. So, he's likely a #9 hitter. I think he's got a decent chance of being added to the 40 man roster. I really like Beresford's defense at both middle infield spots. He can hit for average, but there's no reason to walk him due to little power. He'd be a great utility infield glove, even today. Florimon is a great glove, great arm... a little double pop.
