Good question. What are your thoughts? For starters, I think the old guard needs to swallow their pride and step aside, no more campaigning, endorsements, nothing. (Looking at you, Biden. Is he still lingering?) as for 2020, I think the Democratic Party needs someone young and from the south, like Bill in 1992. Completely new people.

That's a tough one and I agree about the old guard. I don't have many answers, only a couple of thoughts. I haven't known more than 2-3 politicians in my life that I liked, from either major party. And the few I did like didn't act like politicians, they tended to give honest answers and were straightforward, were quite apolitical in their cadence and demeanor and actions. The most important element for these few, was that they had never sold out to a corporation, a charity, a political party, a powerful figure(s), an industry, a 'whatever type of entity you want to name', and never took a dime from anyone except grassroots participants, individuals, citizens, voters.

This is not much more than a feint echo in this country from my vantage point, but had a slight resurgence with Bernie in 2016. Not that I liked the guy, but he did a fine job at swelling up grassroots support against what seemed to be an invincible opponent. I'm expecting to see more of this down the road, but maybe I'm wrong.

Trump nominates a guy for the Federal bench who has only practiced law for three years and has never even tried a case or presented a motion.

So apparently this guy likes to investigate paranormal activity, defends the KKK, and thinks Roe v. Wade and Miranda decisions are indefensible.

The lifting of the ban on imports of elephant trophies bothers me.  There is no reason for it other than to negate something Obama did or do it as a favor of his sons so they can bring home more exotic trophies.

He really could be a cartoon villain from the old school Saturday morning TV.

On a different topic, I am glad the House is passing a tax bill that won't hurt their constituents at all...

How else are people supposed to show their houseguests that they are a "real man", if they can't show them the trophy elephant they killed?

No kidding! What do you do when they're extinct and you don't have a trophy you can proudly show off before they're all dead?

I think it's a given that the Trumps have some ivory and the like in a closet somewhere that they would like to show it off.

If I did not know any better - this is something that you would have heard almost verbatim on one of FDR's fireside chats.

Now that the three basketball players are out of China and saved from years in jail, LaVar Ball, the father of LiAngelo, is unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal. I should have left them in jail!

Distracting people from the real scandal happening on tax reform right now. I don't think the resistance will be enough to defeat this bill. Hopefully the people who voted these sell outs in are paying attention.

They'll blame the Democrats or everyone else but the candidates they voted for.

I hope the Senate can stop this monstrosity. I don’t know if the country’s luck can hold up much longer. The GOP’s ability to “screw up a two-car funeral” can’t continue, amiright?

I think there are just enough sane republicans and too many crazy ones to get some of the most evil stuff passed.

I tend to ignore right wing crazies for my own sanity but after both Trump's overt racism and the O'Keefe **** up on the same day, I went to see what some were saying. I shouldn't have bothered. I'm usually an optimist but I think there's a solid 30% of this country that's hopeless.

I just have to wonder what kind of human being files a knowingly false sex assault claim for tactical political benefit, knowing that each such claim makes it harder for the ones with real claims to come forward.

At the most mundane and self-interested level, what if she herself is a victim of abuse at some later time? Unless she has ironclad witnesses, she can never bring forward her charges. This amounts to peeing in one's own bath water....

I really believe we should divide the union at this point

California, Oregon, and Washington have movements in motion to begin the process along these lines. Texas has spoken about this in the past. There are those that understandably joke that this is absurd and ridiculous. A few years ago I'm sure many would absolutely agree that this was absurd. Now the degree to which it seems absurd may have decreased in strength. Many often speak of the growing division, the lack of understanding, lack of empathy, the dreaded Thanksgiving dinner political topics coming up, etc.

Is the growing division repairable or will we continue to slide further into our bases and cease communication with opposing views ultimately?

We're not breaking up the union - plus the divide isn't so much states as big cities v. small cities/rural areas. That's not something redrawing some state lines will fix.

I do hope that less gerrymandering might be able to fix a big part of the problem. We need more moderate leaders and not ideologues in either party. Make the districts competitive. No one should hold a House seat for 20 consecutive terms.
