I don't think it matters to the development of the players or any long term value to the Twins. It takes at least a few hundred plate appearances and even then it wouldn't add much to the evaluation they would have formed this year.

What did a month of Pinto or Parmelee add to their evaluations when they came up? Nothing of value. If anything the small sample led to an over evaluation of their talents.

Confuscious says, "every long journey starts with a single step". :). Or was that Chairman Mao?

Walker is soon to be 25 years old and has over 1000 PA's in the high minors.
He's not going to be harmed by getting called up to the MLB right now.

Nor is he going to be harmed by waiting three days, or another week or even until next year.

It's simply more interesting baseball to watch new, different, younger players preform poorly I suppose.

Zach Granite is going to be added to the 40 man this offseason too. It would have been great to see him get rewarded for his excellent season by getting a month in the majors.

Arguing for this is maybe more of a reach.... but really? Logan Schafer?

Zach Granite is leading his league in BA and SB's, has a 1:1 W/K rate and can play defense. He'll be 24 in a few months. The team, with flyball pitchers and on pace to set a strike out record, needs someone with exactly Granite's skills. Promoting Schaefer, a mediocre veteran with no future, is continuing to think the same way they ended up in this situation. Palka and Walker, although more upside that Schaefer, accentuate the existing weaknesses. Granite should be on the team instead of Grossman anyway.

Yeah he could perform poorly. Or, like Kepler and Polanco he could come up and play well. And yeah, it won't mean a ton over that sample size, but it's still some data.

With Schaefer you get nothing.

Agree to disagree I guess. I think you should find the silver lining in a lost season, that being the chance to evaluate possible future pieces.

Granite would probably make a better defensive outfielder out of the bunch. Has not hit above AA. His OPS at AA is not very good. With the Red Wings and call ups, they must be hoping for a hot streak to make the playoffs. A week or so before September callups. Any player that people are distraught   about not being called up to get big league experience may be up then. I really doubt it will make a difference, but people have to complain.

If Rosario gets injured they don't need to give their pitchers an OF with really poor fenders on the corners and Kepler in CF For the first time this year. Even last year he didn't have many games there.

If Rosario gets injured, they can make a roster move after the game for a Logan Schafer type. Kepler would only have to be an in-game emergency CF.

Well, they seem to call up other players straight from AA. But beyond the point. A September call-up is an opportunity to put players in a major league environment, especially against teams in your own division and you actually aren't playing much of a spoiler role this year, so they can be used. It shows them what major league play is like. It gives them something to work on and strive to maintain IF they want to stay in the majors tomorrow or the following year.

I am all for rewarding players that mean something to the organization, giving them some extra pension time and such. But I would reward Beresford before pretty much anyone on the offense side.

Yes, there is not a lot of name to call from Rochester, and one may ask "why" should we add anyone before their time (like the front office is probably kicking tires that they added Berrios this season when they didn't have to add him until November in reality). But, hey...give Granite an early shot. Stick some pins in #1 Buxton that he isn't all alone as being the heir to centerfield. If they need someone for the playoffs in Chattanooga, drop Buxton back a step for the couple of weeks...or Schafer. Walker CAN play the outfield if you need a Santana replacement. Hey, the Twins are running with one extra pitcher.

Can't wait to see what does happen when the Rochester season ends. Who might leave before September 1. What to do with Albers, Dean, Centeno, Boshers for starters.

You could make this argument at any time, to delay any promotion indefinitely. At some point you will have to call those players up. Might as well be now, when you have an opening in a lost season, even if they won't get a determinative number of PAs by season's end.

And if the front office previously overvalued the Septembers of Parmelee and Pinto (and I don't think they did, both opened the following season on the bench and found themselves back in AAA soon thereafter), the lesson to be learned is not "don't play prospects in September." The lesson would be, don't over-value September results.

Sometimes it's hard to believe some of the posters are longtime Twins fans.

For as long as I remember, the Twins have delayed promoting players at the end of the season if their minor league teams are in pennant runs. This hasn't changed. Why do you expect it to now? Is playing a month on a losing team worth more than a month on a pennant chasing team?

Playing with a team in playoff contention is more beneficial to a player's development than promoting him to a losing team just trying to finish out the season. The Twins have an obligation to provide players to the minor league teams. While the overall goal is to eventually promote them through the system, they also have to provide quality players to fill those rosters for the entire season. Those teams are not there just to provide prospects for the parent club, but to put on a quality product for each level.

Explain to the Rochester / New Britian community that it's in their best interest to surrender all of their prospects to the major league club right in the middle of a playoff push. Never mind that those prospects will probably sit on the bench most of the time while up with the big league club. Playing in meaningless games even if they did play. You can make do with the minor league signings the parent club made in case of emergencies. Good luck. You won't have minor league affiliates if that continues.

Pretty easy choice. They need an extra outfielder.

Rochester's season is over on September 6th.

In 7 more games, Palka and Walker can get probably 30-32 plate appearances playing in Rochester.

In the next 7 games with the Twins Palka or Walker would probably get 4-5 plate appearances.

Easy decision if you ask me.

(Then again, when rosters expand, I'd take Schafer off the 25 and 40 man rosters and call up guys with a future.)

Well they could bring up one of them and actually play them, that might be novel. Not sure why Robbie Grossman shouldn't  be the extra outfielder at this point, I know I've seen enough.

People are upset that the Twins called up a different player a week earlier?  This, like the Arcia and Vargas backlash seems like people needed to vent for venting sake.

Why? What difference does it being a week early make?

Yes, you do consider the needs of the minors leagues. But looks like Rochester won't be in the playofs. Chattanooga will. And most of the AA guys with promise will probably be in Winter Ball. Itis fun to go to the playoffs in the minors. But I would expect that if you polled players, spending time in the majors (with major league money and travel and such) would be more of a plus than a minus any day.

Or Palka/Walker could have played every day with the Twins instead of the awful fielding Robbie Grossman.

This should not have been an obvious or easy decision. Logan Schafer is bad at baseball, and giving him time in the majors over players who might have a future with the team makes little to no sense.

your argument on AA would be a valid one if you could have picked out a player similar to Granite that worked out. .  A week in the minors playing everyday or  2-3 games in the majors.   Consistent time for Grossman and Rosario to see if they belong. The board argument was others should be playing over Santana. Well, they got their wish.

Why is that so obviously true?  Is being in a playoff race playing against has-beens and probably won't-bes all that valuable, compared to playing against major leaguers who are fighting for the playoffs?  I would think so.  Is batting against the Cleveland rotation better for development than batting against an International League rotation?  Hmmm...probably.

I don't see how wanting the best players on the major league team makes me a suspect Twins fan.  Interesting thought. I will check my loyalty oath and see if cheering for Rochester is the highest priority.

At 29 yrs. old, I'd say Logan Schafer's time playing baseball is close to being over.  This could be his last moments in the sun.  Why not give him this brief opportunity until the end of the AAA season?  It's not like those players are going to see an enormous amount of AB's anyway.

This doesn't really make sense here.  I fully admit, teams have some obligation to the minor league affiliates, but we just called up Wimmers, a few weeks ago we called up 3/5 of the Rochester rotation over 3 days, they called up Chargois and Light recently, they kept Vargas up here for a few weeks as a bench player, they called up Polanco and Berrios a month ago, etc.  (This month, in their "pennant drive", Rochester has been stuck starting a 3B with a .492 OPS thanks to that Polanco promotion.)  There is no way you can draw a bright distinction between making those moves, but not calling up Walker or Palka today.

Also, if the Rochester pennant race was so important, why not let them keep Logan Schafer and sign someone off the street instead?  Otherwise, don't we either have to replace Schafer there or make them play shorthanded?  Heck, Schafer was written into the #3 hole in the Rochester lineup yesterday before he got scratched to be called up, although admitted he has primarily been a reserve lately -- since we gave them Buxton back.

And it's not like it has been a one-way street.  On the flip side, we just gave them Duffey and Berrios, plus Buxton and Vargas and Mitch Garver a few weeks ago, and signed Mujica.

As for playoff minor league baseball being more important to a player's development, why did we promote those guys listed above?  Why did we promote Kepler?

My money is on Logan Schafer finishing the season in Minnesota.  They haven't even cut Albers yet, as was often predicted after his "emergency" call-up a few weeks ago.

Speaking of Albers, Seth, how did this prediction of yours work out?

"I'd bet any amount of money (less than like $1) that Jason Wheeler will make a start on Monday or Tuesday."

I'd oh someone less than a dollar if anyone would have taken me up on it.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Schafer sticks for the rest of the year. I'm just saying I wouldn't. I'm fine with him coming up now, but in my mind, he should be DFAd when the minor league season is done. We'll see. I won't place any sort of bet on that one.

It has been put forth many times Sano should be playing more 3b  to get better. If that argument has any validity, it would hold true for Grossman. In the minors and majors Grossman has played in LF less than Sano has played 3b.
