Article: Official Trade Deadline Day Thread

Recommended Posts

Any deal that gets Nolasco out of town is a good deal....

I'm about as big of a Nolasco non-fan as there is. But if the 'I'm not limited by money' story line that Ryan often relied on were true, then Nolasco's exit was always just a DFA away; no need to give up anything.

This trade may be a net plus if Santiago > Meyer (which seems very possible with Meyer's shoulder issue), but otherwise it's mostly just a Pohlad pocket protector until they're more forthcoming about the true nature of Twins payroll constraints.

It's also 6 years of Meyer vs 1 year of Santiago (unless the Twins sign him to an extension but that seems unwise).  They could always trade him this winter or next trade deadline I guess, in which case it becomes 6 years of Meyer vs whatever they get in return.

Things are looking up ....

  • Twins had a pretty decent month in July and the offensive potential is apparent.
  • Nolasco gone.  Thank God!
  • Berrios up and hopefully for good
  • Polanco up and hopefully for good
  • Some decent talent added to the farm system
  • Santiago will improve our staff for next year.
  • Santiago and Santana are potential deadline assets next year if our young core is not able to get us in contention next year.

I don't know why but I just get the feeling Meyer had a bad attitude and the Twins got rid of him, like Garza, to just get him out of here.   No proof but just the quietness of his injury and the way he was handled I just get that feeling there was some issues going on behind the scenes.

I'm not worried about missing out on six years of Meyer.  He's El Busto.

Such an odd trade. This makes the Twins better this year and next year. Is that worth losing Meyer? It might be since he's been absolutely terrible the last 2 years. I don't think so though. There's still a chance he could be a shut down reliever.

The Yankees are selling everything that isn't nailed down and they're .500 right now. Guess the Twin's think they can compete next year. I don't see it and adding a #4 starter isn't going to change anything.

At least I don't have to see Nolasco pitch again and Meyer isn't a huge los

The Twins aren't done with Suzuki to that extent, I am pretty sure of that.  Who exactly would replace him?

True, but the Twins won't necessarily be able to find the team that wants to trade for them in August -- they will be restricted to negotiating, for a 48 hour window, with the worst team that claims them.  Maybe the Padres want to trade a low minors lottery ticket for Abad or Kintzler in August?  Too bad, if one of Braves, Reds, Rays, or Diamondbacks wants to try claiming them for free, if only so they themselves can try flipping them to the Padres (or whomever) for that low minors lottery ticket after the season.

Do those teams have 40 man roster spots available to block moves like that and will they want to use those 40 man spots to try and block a Kintzler or Suzuki trade or do they want to risk them blocking other trades.

Look, I really liked Meyer last year (or the year before......not sure.....)......but they got a legit MLB pitcher for him, who can probably be flipped at next year's deadline, and Meyer may never pitch in the majors. Oh, and they unloaded Nolasco and saved some money.......I hope Meyer becomes awesome, because I just want people to succeed, but I can't rip this deal. Not even in retrospect if that happens....

So the final tally appears to be

Departures

Nolasco

Nunez

Abad

Meyer

Arrivals

Santiago

Busenitz

Pat Light

Mejia

Pending

Suzuki

Kinzler

Santana

So we upgraded the rotation for next season with Santiago, replaced Meyer with Light, got a back of the rotation starter for the long haul and a flier with Busenitz in the bullpen. The only thing we gave up in return that had long term implications is Meyer and that was debatable.

I'd say that was a pretty good deadline. Nothing earth shattering but I think the team is improved both in the short and long terms.

Nice deadline for Antony.  For rebuilding purposes, I wish Santana had been traded for prospects, but Antony did very well.

I really want to know what was on the table between the Jays and Twins for Ervin.

Yeah me too.  Jays ended up settling for Scott Feldman and Liriano.  Very interested to see what was going on there before that deal fell apart.

The problem is the deals Antony didn't make, which has been a theme in the past as well. This deadline certainly did nothing to indicate Antony represents anything other than a continuation of the same old.

Really? Didn't they eat money on the Nolasco deal? I don't recall Ryan doing that.....
