Because the rules of baseball dictate that all players playing in the field must also bat, except for the pitcher, unless you're playing in a national league park, in which case the pitcher must also bat.

Do the rules allow a team to substitute a player from the bench to replace the batter? A "pinch hitter", if you will.

The rules also, so far as I know, do not state that Oswaldo Arcia is prohibited from hitting.

So, you know, he could've hit instead.  Or Kepler.  Or freaking Brunansky for all I care.

Bremer trying to rationalize that ridiculous decision to bunt.

It wasn't a ridiculous decision, just a bad idea to have Suzuki bunt.  Bring in Nunez, and then have JRM catch the rest of the game.

Oh wait, I forgot, if we do that, we don't have a third catcher, which means we'd have to give up our DH if Murphy were to get a sunflower seed in his eye somehow.

A suzuki bunt pop up bunt for a double play, now that is a new one I have not seen. If he was doing that on his own then OK, but if the manager called for it, big time weenie decision asking a guy that doesn't bunt much to try that.

That play is colloquially known as the Punto Special.

I saw Punto do it many times. Pitchers knew when the guy was going to bunt and would throw the ball neck-high. Undaunted by this unexpected challenge, Punto would bunt anyway... And pop it to the pitcher.

The last few notes of take me out to the ballgame that the gentleman just played should be saved as the soundtrack of this season thus far.

Yeah.    That... was bad.    And that's coming from a former sax player who's had a solo not go as planned.    But that wasn't just 'not as planned' bad.    That was 'jam the mouthpiece up a goose's @ss and blow as hard as you can' bad.

Gotta "make something happen"

Paid by the move, and that cabin up north ain't gonna pay for itself.

I could be wrong, but I'm betting the rules prohibit Brunansky from hitting.  At least legally.

yeah it was a ridiculous decision, IMO

If Escobar and Mauer aren't hitting next to each other in future lineups, I'm going to get ticked off. They are the only two getting on consistently. They have to be batting next to each other until one of them stops hitting.

Or until someone else starts.

Why is Arcia not pinch hitting there? Why are they bunting, down two. I am sorry, Molitor does not understand basic strategy.

At this point, I'd settle for no bunts when one guy is on base and two runs are needed. We can deal with pinch-hitting once we've mastered the bunting thing.

Basically it was popped straight in the air to the third base side of the pitchers mound. High into the air. A brilliant display of fundamental baseball.

And that is a brilliant display of sarcasm.

So, you're basically saying you're confident one or both of those skills will be mastered in the near future?
