Leading off: Twins President Dave St. Peter. Batting second: Twins catcher (and current Fox Sports North analyst) Tim Laudner. And I’m thrilled to announce that Jacque Jones will be our #3 hitter at the Twins Daily Meltdown.

Jones patrolled the outfield for Twins for the better part of seven seasons, including being an integral part of the teams that won three division championships from 2002 through 2004. He was the leadoff hitter for those teams, with a .782 OPS and 132 home runs with the Twins, all while playing exceptional corner outfield defense.

That shouldn’t be a surprise, considering he played center field for most of his minor league career and as an All-American at USC. He also played with the US Olympic Baseball team in 1996 at Atlanta, winning a bronze medal with future Twins teammate Matt LeCroy. He was drafted that same year by the Twins in the second round.

When he left the Twins following the 2005 season, he signed with the Chicago Cubs and played with them for two years. He also spent time with the Tigers, Marlins and Reds organization before returning to the Twins in 2010. As a result, he received loud standing ovations during his at-bats in the two exhibition games played prior to Target Field’s first official MLB game.

Some questions for Jacque:

  • You were part of some great defensive outfields with the Twins, in particular the “Soul Patrol” with Hunter, Lawton, and yourself.  There have been some recent discussion questioning if OF defense has any impact on pitching.  Do you think your great OF defense helped the pitching staff of your teams or do you think it is minimal and pitchers just have to pitch?
  • As a player you had dramatic splits with an OPS of .819 against RHP and an OPS of .649 against LHP.  Looking back on your career do you think it would have been better to have platooned with someone an minimized your AB against LHP or do you agree with your opportunities against LHP?
  • What was it like during the contraction year playing for an owner that wanted to shut down your team?  I always imagined it was like the movie “Major League” where the manager united the locker room by showing how ownership was against them.

I had a great time last year, and this year's lineup of guests sounds great.

Unfortunately, I have to go a friend's wedding.  I know, it's very selfish of him to get married the same day as the winter meltdown, but not everyone is as selfless as I am.

Is there a plan to have another summer meetup like the one before the Home Run Derby?

I went last year, and while I remember the beginning of the event, towards the end things got a bit more hazy. After about 5 minutes into the first interview the crowd noise started up and I spent the remainder of the evening unable to hear most of the interviews and instead drank beers and talked baseball and what have you with friends, some new and some old. Thankfully, TD released the audio recording from the event the following week.

Hopefully the interview sessions are better set up this year, i look forward to hearing what these guys have been up to, and what they have to say about their days with Minnesota.

Jones was part of a MLB team that played Post season exhibition games against Japanese teams while I was stationed there. He and teammates (including Torii Hunter) made a visit to Yokota Air Base for a clinic for little leaguers. Jones could not have been more gracious and friendly to my two boys...of course, both boys were decked out in Twins gear, but he went out of his way to spend extra time with them and stayed late to visit. He seemed like such a nice man. I'm sure he'll make a great guest.

Looking forward to it, thanks guys. What year was it that Jacque Jones led off the season (I think it was in Kansas City) with a home run? I'm sure I could look it up but I figured someone on here would know...still remember that obviously. It was a fun opening day jolt like, "Yay, baseball is back."

in 2002 he hit a leadoff homer and then a three run homer later in the same game to put the Twins up 7-6

His first HRs in 2000, 2001 and 2002 were all against the Royals, but the 2002 ones were on Opening Day.

To expand on that story, the leadoff HR was much more than "baseball is back".  It came after the off-season of uncertainty as to whether the Twins would be contracted.  It was an all-caps "BASEBALL IS BACK AND THE TWINS ARE PART OF IT!".

I'll always remember Dick Bremer's call: "That left Kansas City and I hope it landed in Milwaukee." About as edgy as Bremer gets.

I bought a ticket last Tuesday - does my name just go on a guest list? the e-mail confirmation mentioned that I would get a second e-mail when the item "shipped" but I don't think there's actually anything being mailed, is there?

We have placed a bag of tickets in the forest somewhere north of Bemidji.

Godspeed, everyone.

(just give your name at the door)
