"Alt" 93.3

With the recent launch of Alt 93.3 the Twin Cities' FM dial has reached a new height of incest. The channel couldn't be more ironically named, as proven by its position in this ven diagram depicting station playlists

I didn't even realize a new station launched. My radio hasn't left The Current since the end of the baseball season.

Too much talking in the morning, and a lot of songs I don't like. When that happens, I move to 96 or 93, then come back.......

96.3 has played serious deep cuts a few times, from groups I love, but songs you don't hear on the radio often/ever.

I always found the playlist to be horribly girly and local. Its almost like they refuse to play anything written by a white male with an electric guitar from the past 25 years. But I'm probably not their target demo.

I'm not even sure what that means, so I'm not sure whether or not to be insulted.  Is this a 'runs like a girl' kind of comment?

(Don't know the stations in the Cities anymore ... in Chicago I listen primarily to XRT or The Drive.)

I think he means that there are a lot more folksy, soft sounds as opposed to a Q101.  (I dearly miss that station and was sad to see what has happened to it since I left Chicago)

The current doesn't play white male guitar players? You must not listen often.

Yes literally they will play white males with a guitar as long as all licks and solos and noise have been watered out of it. Which is not my thing personally.

I don't hate the Current, because its playlist is for the most part unique.

Actually the best station, during the week, is KMOJ (on Sundays its gospel). Long stretches of interruption free music and almost no overlap with other stations' playlists. But the signal's weak and, personally, I hate all the music on there.

Jack White is on pretty much every day. The Black Keys, on most every day. Most days you can also hear Weezer or Muse or the Ramones (if you want older bands) and other such bands. I do agree, it has a wider variety guitar sound than some stations, but it just isn't true that the kind of bands you are talking about aren't on at all, they are pretty much on every day. Heck, Radiohead (new and old, back when they had guitars) are on most every day.

Its not a great batting average. I think I hear 20 Jeremy Mesersmiths for every one Radiohead song.

That's precisely the problem, for every time I get to hear the Pixies I have to trudge through 12 or 13 folksy, poetry-jam style songs by no-names.  I tried the Current, I really wanted to support what they stand for too, but I just don't like the music they play.

They're the kind of bands I could get into live if I'm having a beer and enjoying a night out with the wife and I hear their whole set list.  Not the kind I want to hear mixed with other similar bands on a radio station.

No issue......there are many times I turn the channel......there is no channel that is perfect, frankly.

Back when I was in high school (a long, long time ago) I interviewed John Sebastian (not the Lovin' Spoonful John Sebastian, this other guy here, then with KDWB) and he explained to me that music on the radio was intended for people who don't really like music. There are more people who don't (and radio must appeal to a mass audience) and those who do like music, listen to records.

If that was true in 1976, today in 2015, with mp3/Pandora/Spotify etc. it is even more true. So I never expect music on the radio to be any good, and if it is, it is a transient exception.

Can anyone tell me what happened on 96.3 K-Twin now that the robot voice has been replaced by actual content?

It's not Ktwin, it is go 96.3......and they play lots of arctic monkeys, weezer, and black keys. While those are the three I listen to a lot.....maybe not every hour or two.....
