On top of the two remaining years on his contract, Hughes gets $13.2 million per year from 2016-2019.

Five years is a long time, I wouldn't have been a fan if he was a free agent, but he's still under 30, so this could work out really well for the team if he can be a rock in the rotation like he was last year.

Of course it could go the other way and this deal could end up being quite a burden, but such is the dilemma when dealing with the fragile arms of MLB pitchers.  Can't win without them.

Personally I like this deal and given what even average pitchers are going for this seems like a pretty good deal to me.  I agree that you can never bank on an arm not breaking down but again given the market and how well he pitched last year I think Hughes is under selling himself.  If Hughes continues to be a good pitcher adding the two years is huge as most of the young pitchers in the system should be up by then.  Time will tell but I like this deal.

I would have waited one more season as I think Hughes is the biggest regression candidate on the roster.

Maybe.  But maybe not.  If he pitches like last season through the remainder of this deal this contract is a bargain.  Gotta give major props to the Twins FO for spending the money and keeping him, signing Santana, Nolasco, etc.  Now if Nolasco turns it around this season and Santana pitches to his full ability the Twins have a SOLID front three to that rotation.

Love the deal.  Prior to last year, he was a pitcher with an ERA just over 4.00 if you remove the new Yankee stadium starts.   So if he regresses back to that point, $13M is actually less than he would get in free agency.  Of course, you have a potential #1 starter at a very reasonable price for many years.

I like that the club is being proactive and is not afraid to spend.  As long as it doesn't turn into a hinderance to future flexibility, I'm all for it.  The front office keeps saying they are willing to spend, so I hope that continues to be true.  It would be awesome to be able to remove worrying about the Twins payroll from my to-do-list.

He could regress by half his WAR total from last season and still be easily worth that money.

Surprised they pulled the trigger, but pleased. The "spread it around" approach has had better results than dumping a ton of money into a couple guys.

Exactly.  I am starting to get excited about this rotation.  Stability is what they've needed.  If the youngsters (May, Meyer, Berrios) progress we also have guys available in the minors as replacements should we decide to trade.
