Folks used to say that George Edward Pickett was a great strategist too

That one was on Robert E. Lee. Pickett's claim to fame was being the only general involved in Pickett's charge to survive the assault.

Both Dakotas have been pacified, and we have left a small containment force in place, in Sioux Falls and Grand Forks.

Pretty much leaves west river wide open.

This topic has gotten way off-topic. If only the moderators would post something about thread jacking so people start discussing the orignal topic and not star wars and daleks and other things I'll never understand.

i disagree, it's less thread-jacked than it is addressing the level of concern by the posters of the over-moderation. Which is to say, not very concerned.

I for one, like the quality of post/conversation here and feel that the moderators do a very good job of facilitating that. There's some occasional pruning of branches, which gets frustrating, especially when it's me that gets nipped in the bud. But I'm ok with it.

Community Moderator

I personally hate censorship, and know for a fact that all of the 8 moderators hate censorship.  We also make a conscious effort not to moderate any more than we feel is necessary to avoid flame wars and disruptive threadjacking.

None of us are perfect, but we all love respectful debate, and we all work hard to promote an environment where such debate can thrive.

This was more tongue-in-cheek than anything else. I was voicing ligitimate concern that this thread was dissolving into pointless meme's and photos and not addressing the actual purpose of the thread. And that those people moving the thread away from the topic were moderators/admins who like to warn about that sort of thing seemed fittingly irionic to be commented upon.

That being said, my actual level of concern is/was low.

Fair enough - I'll address that aspect because I did think about it as I posted. (Putting aside for the moment that you stated that your own concern was low.)

First, digressions (as opposed to willful changes of subject) are natural in any thread, up to a point, and are sometimes interesting or at least add life to a community-style web site.  Second, there is a distinction between baseball threads and other threads, and this one is very much in the "other" category.  Third, a digression that continues can indicate that the main discussion of the topic has pretty much ended and the silliness is just something that can be taken or left depending on the taste of the reader; if there is sentiment to continue the main conversation but it's getting drowned out by noise, the moderators are more likely to tamp down on the extraneous chatter.  Finally, I think there is value in getting to know TD members (including mods) as people, and joking around is one way to do that.

While it will never be a perfect document, the Comment Policy tries to be clear on such things and it's worth reading carefully if you care about "why this and not that, why here and not there" kinds of things.  Feedback on the policy is welcome, by private message, or in this area of the forum.

So now we can't point out that the Pohlads are cheap and always have been cheap without an instant deletion?

Methinks some over moderating is being done again for really no reason.

That isn't what was said in your deleted post.

More or less yes. I called him worthless and cheap and that someone should steal his statue and throw it in the river.
