Mods or people over sensitive on Mauer?

I got a warning for a post that implied Mauer wasn't smart (which, according to people who have met him, is true) which was actually relevant to the concerns in the thread that Mauer needed to make some changes and would face difficulty doing so.  Meanwhile we have other threads that are killing the integrity of  Ryan, St. Peter and the Pohlads - which I'm totally ok with by the way.  TD has a freaking under-current of posters that posted Gardy disliked people based on their ability to read books and worse.  Heck, some mods have questioned Ozzie Guillen's intelligence pretty roughly.  Ricky Nolasco "stinks as a player and does nothing for the community."

There is no way the my comment on Mauer was out of place and was pretty tame compared to a lot of other posts.

I remember your post. Knowing you as a poster, I think I understood your context but the mods are rightly sensitive regarding any Mauer threads because they routinely turn into a three-ring circus. Are we over-sensitive about Mauer? Possibly, but it's more out of necessity than any real love of Joey Baseball. He's a polarizing figure in Minnesota... All you have to do is look at that (awful) article yesterday to see there's still a lot of resentment toward him and his paycheck.

Had your rephrased your statement a bit I think the mods would have let it go... For example, instead of calling him stupid, something like "his reluctance to engage the media and be forthright about past issues has made him look pretty dumb, hurting his image". I think that's what you were trying to say in the first place... That's what I got from your post, anyway.

A fine line? Yeah, definitely. But given the frequent ****storms that are Mauer threads, it's something we're pretty sensitive to as a group.

I didn't issue the warning, but I agree with Brock that a Mauer thread may automatically draw moderator oversight more quickly than an average thread, just due to past experience.

However a phrase like "dumb as a box of rocks" (if that's the one that caused this warning - it may have been edited out by the time I saw it) stands a good chance of earning a warning, even if applied to Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne. :)  I would not say that Mauer receives special protection in that regard.

If the intelligence of someone associated with the team was thought to be a legitimate issue, I'm sure a thread could be constructed that would pass muster at this site. The moderators aren't here to squelch discussion of ideas.  But casual disrespect establishes a tone that ultimately leads to diminished quality of discussion.

I don't doubt there are posts that violate this principle of "posting with respect" yet receive no action.  There are gray areas and there are 8 moderators and there are many posts every day, so some variability will happen.  As the Comment Policy states, an un-checked violation does not make it open season for everyone else.  You can report a post if you think it's gone seriously off the rails; people who read every post every day may need to have a high threshold before doing this, just because so much gets posted.

Just to be clear, it was not a moderator who posted that Nolasco "stinks", assuming you're talking about the thread regarding the recent tweet.  Moreover, the context was "stinks as a player", which isn't quite the same as simply "stinks".  Finally, we don't often initiate public discussion of moderator actions on individual posts, so don't assume that no action was already taken there; editing may or may not occur in a given case where a warning is given.

I was once informed that comparing me to a box of rocks was complimentary. I believe that was in basic training.

I like Mauer, do not think he is as dumb as a box of rocks (or as dumb as Llyod), but now I will see this comparison in my head every time he smartly comes up to bat.

Then my work here is done.

If you question anyone's intelligence in your post, expect to be moderated, unless you have a well written thesis with strong supporting information.

"Joe Mauer is a bum" I imagine would be fine

"Joe Mauer is an idiot" probably doesn't cut the mustard

"Joe Mauer is an idiot who makes careless throws from first base, doesn't hustle on the base paths and generally runs himself into outs" has a better chance of staying on the board, at least tha's been my experience.

The general feeling I get from the mods, who do a pretty good job, is to err on the side of over moderation. better to stifle or edit something little here or there to stop a rock from sliding before it becoems an avalanche. I'm not sure I always agree that the rocks are going to cause a slide, but I'm also a drunken uneducated pirate who would be happy to have any box of rocks as a friend, impressive side burns or not.

Re-reading this something just struck me.

"Mods OR people?"

Daleks. Invading Minnesota, of all places. Insidious little buggers.

It was bound to happen eventually.  Maybe they can do something to shorten the time of the games.  Daleks can be polarizing as well, so I am hoping there will not be a lot of unfounded or unsubstantiated insults of them.

i got hung up there too. I had no idea what a Dalek was, and was entirely oblivious before reading this post. The picture was quite informative. Thank you both. The sad part is, I've seen a few episodes of Dr Who, but was not aware of the threat to Minnesotans.

What I've in general learned is, you can attack persons work output or decisions made, but not the person, and never the Daleks.

Yes, it is.  But this is not a 'free-for-all' website.  Twins Daily is privately owned and operated and as such, the owners want a certain level of civility and the moderators have agreed, voluntarily, to help maintain that.  If you click on the little 'Privacy Policy & Site Rules' link at the lower right of the page, you can read about what is expected here.  Or for a more detailed outlay of the posting policy, you can read the pinned post at the top of this forum.

It's worse than you think. We long ago pacified Minnesota...to the point we don't even need a small containment force remaining there. We are now working all of Central and Western North America.

Was this the same guy as in "who's on first"? I had no idea that guy had a medical certificate?

Be careful when you try to take North Dakota. I hear the guy who runs Grand Forks is a brilliant strategist!

Never been in any of the Dakotas, but I have jumped off a few of them.

Folks used to say that George Edward Pickett was a great strategist too (methinks he was at least equal to Ronald Clyde Gardenhire.  And both were born on couches.)

Both Dakotas have been pacified, and we have left a small containment force in place, in Sioux Falls and Grand Forks.

If you want to blame someone, blame the owners of Twins Daily, not the moderators.

We ask for posters to follow some pretty basic rules of decency and to keep things focused on baseball. It's really not that hard.

Chief, you can see that the Owners have now been pacified as well.  Phase 2 can commence, on your word.
