Sid: Ryan And Gardenhire Expected To Return For 2015

According to Sid Hartman (who has many close, personal friends), the Minnesota Twins' general manager Terry Ryan and manager Ron Gardenhire are expected to return for 2015, but it did not necessarily sound like a 100% guarantee:

 

“Let me get through the year,” he said. “Like everything around this organization, we usually wait until the end of the year before we make any decisions.”

 

 

Do the Twins need a shake up of this magnitude? Possibly. Personally, I do believe neither are fired. If they do leave, it will likely be on their own accord.

I don't have a problem with TR staying around, and personally, if the Twins fire Rick Anderson, I don't care who the manager or general manager is. Just get rid of Anderson.

I got an ESPN notification on my phone stating:  Terry Ryan indicated that as long as he is GM, Gardenhire will be the managaer.

Get rid of them all. People can talk all they want about "bad luck" with prospect injuries, or how the team is improved over the last 3 years, but this is still a terrible baseball team. Yes, rebuilding takes time, but at the rate we've been 'improving' it'd be 2017 before we even have a chance to sniff a wild card. 

 

On the pitching side we're 27th in team ERA, 26th in team WHIP, 30th in K9, 25th in opponent OBP, 27th in opponent OPS, 27th in opponent SLG. Remind me again why I'm supposed to be enthused about this? Exclude Hughes, and the rest of our pitchers are probably 30th in every pitching category. 

 

On the hitting side, it seems like lots of people are conveniently ignoring how lucky we've been with some of our players. Sure, we've had some bad luck with prospect injuries, but as much as I want to see him in the bigs, Sano wasn't going to suddenly make this a good team on his own. Suzuki, Escobar, Santana have all played much better than anyone could've expected for much or all of the season. Vargas has been mashing since his call up. Sam Fuld played very well for a stretch. Dozier was on fire in the early goings. Our SS in CF experiment hasn't been nearly as disastrous as it probably should've been. And the list goes on. From the major league clubs standpoint, I'd say we've been quite a bit more lucky than unlucky, and the result is still going to be a 90 loss season.

 

Maybe I'm just too negative, but I don't see any way the FO can seriously look the fans in the face and claim they're justified in bringing back the exact same coaching staff after four years of this garbage. There isn't another org in baseball that would put up with this without making some significant changes.

I've been on the "Fire Gardy" bandwagon for the last half of the season. Not because I think the losing is any direct refelction on him as a manager - just because I felt the team needed a new voice. New blood.

 

My biggest push for getting rid of him has been because he and Rick Anderson are supposedly a package deal. I think Anderson's time with the Twins should be up - and in order for that change, it seemed like Gardy had to go.

 

Remove Anderson and I'm okay with giving Gardy another year.

Wow, wasn't this the scoop of the year! In Sid's mind, even before he became the complete doddering fool he is today, he's been the one to break the big news. I'm trying to remember a single big story broken by Sir Sidney in the past 20 years...hmmm, can't think of one.

So I was at a ST game in Spring of 2013 and this guy is saying the same thing, fire them all. He goes up to this guy in The corner of the stands and tries to get him to sign a petition asking Pohlad to fire all the field staff and TR. He had no idea that the guy in the corner of the stands WAS TR and he asked TR to sign that petition. Ryan just quietly said, "no, I don't think I will be signing that" and the guy went away. Where were you March 20, 2013?

 

TR took over a wretched system top to bottom and has slowly improved the whole product. He isn't going anywhere unless he wants to leave.

If the greatest chef in the world wants to prepare Filet Mignon and is given "Our Family" hot dogs, what does he do ? He does the best he can. 

 

Gardy and Andy are the best manager/pitching coach combination since LaRussa and Duncan.  I pray every day that they will have the time to turn the Twins around.  A few World Series from now all the haters will be ashamed they ever called for new team management. For every specific complaint that can be made about them, I can point out 5 positives...

 

That defense is just as absurd as most criticism.  If you have a complaint about Gardy or Andy, please make it specific... don't just point to the won-loss record, which is NOT their fault.

From today's Strib, Ryan said "People always like change if you’re not successful. That’s kind of the way professional sports are,” Ryan said. “If you don’t have immediate gratification, change it up. But our ownership is not of that mold. They have faith in our front office, that we’ll get it done."

 

Personally, I think both Gardy and Ryan are part of the solution and am glad our ownership isn't into knee jerk reactions.

Let's see - one fired GM, lots of fired coaches in majors and minors, new minor league development guy, huge turnover of players.  Frankly, the only thing that wasn't done was firing Gardy.  So there's been accountability, you just don't like it because the axe didn't fall on the guy you wanted.  Huge difference.

For what it is worth, Reusse had a tweet that Gardy was as surprised by the report as anyone (after Ruesse talked to Gardy).

 

I"m sure Ryan gave some GM speak that was noncommital either way and Sid ran with it.

 

I still think Gardy is gone after the year and it is at least presented as a mutual thing. It's time.
