Article: Trevor May To Start On Saturday

Recommended Posts

Twins Daily has learned that Saturday will be Trevor May day. The righthander will be promoted to the Twins and make the start for the team in Oakland on Saturday afternoon opposite Jeff Samardzija. The other half of the transaction will likely be announced following Friday night’s game.

The 6-5, 240 pound prospect is 8-6 with a 2.93 ERA in 17 starts this season for the Rochester Red Wings. In 95.1 innings, he has allowed just 75 hits, walked 37 and struck out 91 batters.May came to the Twins from the Phillies organization in December of 2012 with Vance Worley in exchange for outfielder Ben Revere. He was Philadelphia’s fourth-round draft pick in 2008 out of Kelso High School in Washington. The Twins sent him back to AA for the 2013 season where he reduced his walk rate from 4.7 per nine innings to 4.0 per nine innings. This year in Rochester, that number has dropped to 3.5 walks per nine innings.

May was on track for a big league promotion in mid-May. He also had been named as a Twins representative in the Futures Game. On June 16, he gave up just one run on three hits and struck out 11 batters in 8.1 innings against Pawtucket. On June 21, he gave up three runs on five hits in five innings and injured his calf. The injury was deemed to be not serious, but he was forced to miss the Futures Game (and replaced by teammate Alex Meyer).

His return to the mound was supposed to come on the Sunday of the Futures Game, but Rochester was rained out, so he could not pitch until July 19th. He went three innings. He went three (no-hit) innings in his next start as well, but the game was suspended because of rain. On July 30, he needed just 77 pitches to get through 6.2 scoreless innings. At that point, the comments coming from the Twins were that he needed to make another start to get to 95-100 pitches.

On Monday night in Louisville, May threw 99 pitches over six innings. He gave up four runs on eight hits and four walks. Despite the results, the Twins will have him make his major league debut on Saturday against the league’s top offensive team, the Oakland A’s.

Before this season, May was #10 in the Twins Daily Top Ten Twins Prospect rankings.

Awesome news! It's time for May to make his debut, he's certainly earned it.

The bummer is I have wedding to attend Saturday night. I've been waiting all season for this debut and it has to come THIS saturday? :(

This was on MLB Trade Rumor earlier this morning.

To be fair, MLB Trade Rumors said "All sign point to him starting on Saturday" not an actual confirmation that he would be.  But yes, I read this too, so it's not incredibly surprising.  Still good news though.

great news. Let the future commence.

Yep.  All the suits were there on Monday in Lousiville, and somehow despite the bad results, May finally passed the test.   Nothing like throwing the kid right into the fire.  Congrats to someone who put in a lot of hard work to get to this point.  Now hopefully the suits can get back to work on finding a way to get Correia off the roster before the end of the month.

Now watch May give up about 7 runs in 2 1/3 and the Twins fans go back into depression mode.  Sure hope not.

I'd much rather watch a struggling May or Gibson than an Andrew Albers/Yohan Pino tease debut (which tends to make certain Twins fans go back into just-as-unfounded, "manic mode").

Wow, excellent news!  I was beginning to think that they'd wait until September or worse yet next season.

Agree completely.

Many times rookies do well in their first outing because the other team is not familiar with their "stuff".  It's the 2nd or 3rd time around against that same team that the pitcher needs to make the adjustments.

Did you have somebody at the airport watching to see who caught a plane to Oakland? :)

From Rochester's airport?  I don't think you could infer much from his boarding a plane to Ohare or other hub. :)

/ edit - or Indianapolis, or whatever AAA city he happened to be in.

I remain optimistic that the wave of prospects that we have been waiting for is coming to shore - the combination of prospects demonstrating success and expiring contracts at the end of the season have me optimistic for more entertaining baseball next spring.  I really don't want to have another season of conversations about 5th outfielders and utility infielders in our starting line up.  We should be about done with stop-gap solutions.

BTW, where is Spirit of Vodka Dave?  He has been talking for 6 weeks that it was a done deal, with inside source that Meyer would be up as soon as the calender turned to 8/1.  Saturday will be Meyer's 2nd start in August at AAA.
