Article: Today's Official Trade Deadline Discussion

Recommended Posts

You can't say Billy isn't going all out to try and get his team to World series this year.  He has a tight window and a tough team in the Angels to beat.  He is sacrificing his future for the present but I think it will work out him or hope it will work out with him.  Would like to see David take down the Goliath's this year.

The Orioles were, at one time, hot after Lester. I wonder if this makes them turn their attention to Suzuki.

That would be nice.  The best thing that could happen to us is the Blue Jays do some crazy trade and freak the Orioles out.

Very surprised Bean is doing this.  Really the opposite of his typical strategy.  My guess is he knows he will replenish his minor league system with potential flips in Gray, Donaldson, Norris, Redick, Chavez, etc.

Ryan, Willingham has no market, and the Twins' asking price on Suzuki is way too high. I still think he'd be a great fit for the O's, but Dan Duquette says they're content with their catching situation.

Believe Oakland also got Gomes in the deal, so they do not need a platoon right handed hitting outfielder.  Reading all the posts on mlbtraderumors, there seems to be more to this then meets the eye, so can understand why this happened.  According to a post late yesterday on mlbtraderumors(sorry do not know how to link them), Boston found out there was 0 chance of resigning Lester at the end of the year, this was making the best of a bad situation, still Boston got a very good deal on a rental.

Cespedes isn't bad, but he is a bit more hype then his true talent.

And he's a free agent after next season, at age 30.  It's not a rental for a young, cheap player, it's a rental for a lease.

As for the Twins being players in the trade market today, well, my super-simple forecaster of all things Twins the past few years has been to close my eyes and imagine the best outcome for the Twins not happening, and don't mean to brag, but it's been incredibly accurate.

That forecaster is telling me the Twins will do nothing of significance to the future of the franchise.  Yes, that's not exactly a Nostradamus prediction, since they have almost nothing to deal.  But that's the real story, not the deadline and what they do.

The real story is that this is a team that's been rebuilding for three consecutive seasons in a row, and is poised to do nothing of note at the deadline for a third consecutive season, and for the most part couldn't if they wanted to.

And though I'm a fan of the Span/Revere trades, it should be noted that in retrospect, the organization clearly made those deals due to their impression that Aaron Hicks was a Mauer-esque, can't-miss prospect who rendered them completely disposable.  Oops.

In other words, today is just another day of the Twins reminding us that there is a difference between rebuilding and just waiting for prospects to come up.

Nice.  Glad to see our asking price for Kurt is way too high, the same thing we heard about Josh over the last 2 years before he became worthless.

I agree with that.  .767 OPS, 17 HR so far.  The biggest asset for him is his contract. Another year and a half at $8M per is pretty good for that production.  I am sure Boston will give him a ton of money.

On a side note, Lester has made it known that he will re-sign with Boston.  It seems like his goal here was to get some more talent in Bean Town, then go back there.  If all goes as planned and that happens he will be a hero in Boston.  It does seem like a risky strategy for him.  What if he gets hurt in his next start?

He said he would be willing to resign in Boston, however he already turned down a few deals they offered him (which were reportedly only like 70 mil) The word is the Red Sox don't want to give a 5/6 year deal to a 30 year old pitcher...if the Red Sox change that stance I could see him coming back to Boston, but you just KNOW that a team like the Yankees, Dodgers etc will overpay for him this off-season.

Fuld to A's in exchange for Millone

Wow, that is a fantastic trade for the Twins.

Fuld was nice and all, but we can grab him or someone like him on the FA market this off-season.

Love the Fuld / Milone trade. The Twins flipped a waiver pick up into pitching depth. Milone is a solid starter too. He won't be an ace, but this team has shown that pitching depth is NEVER a bad thing.

Great trade by TR. I'll give him an A on this one.

I'm not sure Milone is even median, but he's a legit SP in exchange for a 4th OF.

the ONLY negative is that this probably delays one of May / Meyer, doesn't it? Will TR turn around and deal from their glut of MLB/AAAA/AAA pitchers? Or will the Twins have legit MLB SP sitting in NY this year and next?

Great pickup great trade. New problems in the OF. And now they have to move KC and someone else in the rotation.

I'm going to credit Gardy for getting Milone. Had he not insisted on Bartlet, one of our other 4th OFers wouldn't have gotten released and we never would have gotten Fuld.

Congrats Gardy!

That's one way to look at it, I guess.

Well, that over/under of 10.5 might not be too far off.  Already two trades today and we still have hours to go.

And now we apparently get to see Vargas, too.

  1. Sam Fuld back to Oakland, per @jonmorosi, as part of Tommy Milone trade. Also multiple reports indicating Kennys Vargas getting called up.

The Vargas promotion is like a cool prize in a box of already good cereal. A nice trade AND Vargas gets promoted? Well, that's just swell.

I haven't seen Milone pitch a bunch but if you havea  3.84 ERA in 78 starts in the majors you must be doing something right. Apparently he more or less forced the A's to trade him after he was sent to the minors (with a 3.55 ERA) hopefully he comes to the Twins hungry to prove that he deserves to be in a MLB rotation all year long.

I wouldn't worry about May/Meyer in re: to this, the Twins could trade KC today and also Pino/Johnson/etc could always be sent down.
