Anything on Curtiss yet?

I couldn't find anything yet. The following is from yesterday:

The Minnesota Twins selected John Curtiss, the red-shirt sophomore right-handed pitcher, in the 6th round as the 170th overall pick. Although he only spent two seasons in a Texas uniform, Curtiss has earned his spot in the MLB. Curtiss had Tommy John surgery after his freshman season, keeping him out all of last season. Curtiss returned this season with a 2.23 ERA as the Horns’ closer. Curtiss was initially drafted out of high school by the Rockies, but deferred to become a Texas Longhorn. He graduated early from UT, so odds are he will sign on with the Twins this summer.

A little confused on his academic background. Red-shirt sophmore; spent only 2 years at UT; but he graduated.

So did he get his degree in 3 years?

I get that he had TJ after his freshman year (somewhere other than Texas?) then didn't pitch in 2013 but did pitch in 2014, graduated and was drafted. I guess the red-shirt sophomore only applies to his status in college ball.

Ridiculous. Best RHRP in the organization (and I include the MLB arms in this assessment) He belongs at least at Fort Myers.

Looks like the Twins saved about $200K total now. Maybe they will try to entice one of the late rounders...

You could be right in your assessment of Burdi. Still, he will face better lineups in the Midwest League then he has ever faced before. I think with a young guy like this it better to be promoting him then finding yourself demoting him, if it turns out he is bit overmatched. As good as he likely is, he will see tighter strike zones then he has seen before. I assume the Twins want a smooth adjustment for him. I hope to see quick promotions as well.

In the age of stupidity...continuing along the likes of Stephen Drew et al, but in regards to the Rule IV Draft.

I give you Dustin DeMuth...the Twins 8th RD pick from a year ago.

Who likely would have gotten more than $50K had he signed with the Twins.

Looks to be a good hitter...hate to see that he got away.

Twins slots this year as #5 slot, they were #4 last year.

5. Jake Reed - $356,400 - $350,000

6. John Curtiss - $266,900

7. Andro Cutura - $199.900 - $175,000

8. Keaton Steele - $161,300 - $115,000

can anybody provide a list of who is left and at what rounds they were picked?

1-11 are signed as previously stated, just keep going down the list

http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?query_type=franch_year&team_ID=MIN&year_ID=2014&draft_type=junreg&

There might be a better list out there.

Might not be up to date

Wow. looks they are doing an exceptional job of signing with getting the top 17 and only missing on 4 of their top 30 picks. Is that normal that they sign that many? I see a couple people have posted that they hope Chase Tatum is signed. Is he good enough prospect the Twine would go over slot to sign him? Thanks for the links guys

Signing Chase Tatum to an over slot deal might raise some eyebrows. But signing any decreased wrestler might get people to be critical of the front office.

McCarthy Tatum, though, could be pursued. Is he good enough? Who knows. But they have money to throw around, so it is worth trying to find out.

Doogie just tweeted that the Twins didn't sign anyone else but are going to sign a non-drafted FA (anything over $100k would count against the cap). This means they left money on the table which is disappointing to say the least.

Yep. And their GCL team results have been less than inspiring, besides. Are they counting on all the low-cost Intl guys to fill the gaps?

$200K is essentially pocket change really. They have surplus players now for every roster and an overflow crowd in Extended from what I can tell. That's not enough to cover the training table bill in Extended.

Non issue. Just so happened to save money. Nothing to be disappointed about. It isnt enough money to sign some of the tough sign guys. Moneys saved probably go somewhere else...even though 200k is like a value menu burger in mlb budget terms.

I'm not really sure why its disappointing that they left some money on the table... maybe the statement is just incomplete. They could have easily offered the rest of their bonus pool to one of the players they did sign and then they wouldn't have any of that pool money left. Signing 18 of their top 20 picks (including the first 17) seems pretty decent.

$200,000 is a pitence - it could be a lot worse. See the Astros who cheaped out on the #1 pick and didn't sign Aiken (1st rd), Nix (5th rd), and Marshall (21st rd) because of money. The Astros will be shooting for the first 2 picks of next year's draft. Aiken becomes just the third #1 pick to not sign. The other 2 have ties to the Twins - Danny Goodwin by the Chisox in 1971 (later became a Twin), and Twins pick in 1983 - Tim Belcher. Unfortunately, back in 1983, you didn't get a replacement pick if you didn't sign a first round pick.

I'm not suggesting they need bodies, but they could have been more strategic, used the $200k plus the money from going over the cap (but not enough to lose a pick) and taken a harder sign, perhaps a high school arm with some upside. Probably doesn't work out long term, but it was an opportunity wasted to acquire more talent.
