Who's the next bench bat?

Recommended Posts

So, we now know that Pelfrey is DLed, which allows Deduno to take Pelfrey's spot and Darnell to take Deduno's spot, which puts the pitcher count at a harrowing 13 pitchers out of 25 (so many!) players.

So, who fills in for Hicks? Nunez?

And (please god) is there a chance we'll see Florimon demoted soon?

I guess I don't understand why it can't be Arcia?

He's had 4 rehab games, how many does he need?

Machado only needed 4, and he missed the entire spring training.

Derp. Completely forgot that Arcia has been rehabbing. I just wrote him off as "wrist injury, will probably be pronounced dead in three weeks".

Wrist injuries are the worst.

There is no one except Santana and Fryer on the 40-man. Parmelee is on a hitting streak. Ramirez has done well and played some center for the Twins last year. Romero has hit well at third base, Bernier has had a good start, and Beresford started hot, but has struggled a bit lately. Nobody really jumps out. They need a center fielder to pair up with Fuld.

Danny Santana.

Nunez is still out with his oblique injury. Probably another week or two until he plays...

Actually my wish is for bench bat(s)..... (when someone finally explains to Gardy the intricracies about how to carry your 13th pitcher on the Rochester roster).

Florimon and....Hicks.....ideally replaced by Arcia, who hits the ground running...but his return is highly problematic, and Gardy doesn't sound that optimistic. How about claiming Moises Sierra until Arcia is ready? He has played a little CF in the minors and had a little pop in his bat in 2013. Nunez appears to have fallen off the face of the Earth. We can only hope that the Twins are calling around looking to make a deal to put someone's AAA SS guy into the Twins starting lineup.

No need to add another infielder to this team. They need an outfield defender. It will probably mean a 40-man move, but guys at the back end of the 40 shouldn't be too big of a concern for this organization. Fuld and two non-defenders isn't an OF you want to put behind a "pitch to contact" pitching staff.

Or you could just activate the OF'er that is already on the 40 man roster.

Is Arcia really that deep in Gardy's doghouse that they would rather re shuffle the roster than bring him back up?

He's healthy enough to play in minor league games, he's had 4, it's not like he missed 3 months.

He wouldn't be on a rehab assignment if he wasn't healthy.

Gardy doesn't want to bring Arcia back, he said something about having a history of bringing guys back too early from rehab stints.

You could add Kenny Williams who the club just added and sent to AA, otherwise there arent many other OF options available, might have to make a 40-man move.

Gardy said Arcia isn't ready, barring a 40 man change, it should be Santana

I guess I'd have to hear a further explanation of what isnt "ready" about him.

Do they think he might be rusty? Ok, I can buy that, but with our other options, I'm not sure beggars can be choosers right now.

Do they mean he's not healthy? If he's not healthy then why on earth is he playing in minor league games?

Apparently someone else's SS was on the Red Wings. Yet another head-scratching move with Anthony also stating that Escobar is the starting SS for the immediate future. This is a team without apparent direction, major scramble mode.

The move of Escobar to primary SS is not only welcome but very necessary. I am in the camp who loves watching Florimon and believes he is an excellent fielder. And I was OK with him as our starting SS this season figuring he'd at least produce similar to last season, not great but acceptable for his defense and hitting 9th. But there is a difference between being an excellent defensive player and punch-and-Judy hitter, vs not being able to hit even as well as most pitchers. I don't know if Florimon just got behind the 8 ball in ST from his surgery or what, but his ineptitude just can't be ignored any longer. In fact, if the Twins really want to both themselves and Florimon a favor, they will send him to Rochester to work on things.

Completely understand Gardy's position on Arcia and can't disagree with it, though I do hope he's ready soon. Rather have him come up not only healthy, but in a groove and feeling good about his approach.

Thus far, Escobar has performed well and has not been an automatic out. Call me an eternal optimist but I'm really intrigued by Nunez. Not every prospects lives up to advance billing, of course, but, a young athletic Inf who was seen at one point as Jeter's heir simply has to have something going for him. A chance to play, out of the NY spotlight, a fresh start elsewhere, different coaching, call me intrigued. Frustrating he's hurt!

At this point, I would honestly bring up Bernier to be your utility man. He showed last year he could play ML level defense. He can apparently play multiple positions. While I have no illusions offensively, despite his strong start to the season, what is he going to do, hit worse than Florimon?

Know it's Santana. Excited and hopeful to see what he does, and what he learns and takes back with him from this probable cup of coffee. Really, really hoped he'd get a mid-season promotion, show something and stick, building for the future. This is probably too early. We'll see how things play out, but my ultimate vote is Florimon down, Escobar at SS, Bernier up until/unless Nunez is ready.
