So You Want to Make a Deal

Twins Video

I can feel it, the anxiety around here is building, people are dying for some trade news. When the Twins were good they were loathe to part with young players to improve the club, when the club was bad they were so bad that they didn't have anything worth trading. Now we sit here with perhaps not exciting, but certainly plentiful trade chips. There have been rumblings about Ervin Santana, Ricky Nolasco, Tommy Milone, Eduardo Nunez, Eduardo Escobar, Kurt Suzuki, Brian Dozier and Kyle Gibson along with what seems like the entire bullpen.

I'm itching for a trade, everyone's itching for a trade, but should we actually scratch it?

The Twins just hired a search firm to find them a new GM at minimum and perhaps a whole new organizational structure as many of us have been hoping for. While recognizing that he is a stand-up guy, removing Terry Ryan from his GM post received nearly unanimous approval here at Twins Daily, nearly as unanimous is the belief that the next man or woman calling the shots should not come from within the current organization, including interim GM Rob Anthony.

Aside from Kurt Suzuki, every player on the roster is controllable beyond this year. I'm not saying the current folks in charge are not capable, but if the consensus is that someone new should be in charge, should we really be hoping for a huge roster overhaul now? Wouldn't conventional wisdom suggest that we wait for the permanent man or woman make those calls this off-season?

These are my thoughts while I read Twins Daily the last few days as there is a clear tension regarding the trade deadline. I have cravings for a trade, however logic says to wait. But hold on, but does logic really say to wait? Because I also want Jose Berrios, JT Chargois and Jorge Polanco up ASAP, they have been down in the minors much longer than they reasonably should. I care about getting them up and running and hopefully ready to contribute positively by 2017 more than I care about which mid-level prospects come back in a trade. That means getting them at minimum an extra month of MLB playing time.

Therefore, aside from trading Suzuki who will be a free agent anyway, I prefer Anthony to move just enough guys to clear room on the 25-man for those three youngsters above. If I had my druthers, I'd trade Nunez as his value will likely never be higher and his spot presents a clear path for Polanco. Assuming Nolasco and Milone cannot be traded, I may just prefer cutting ties with both come August 2nd to open spots for Chargois and Berrios, moving Trevor May back to the rotation.

So my bottom line is, I would prefer Rob Anthony make only a couple of trades for the sole and explicit purpose of making room for the younger players who are ready now. I would prefer to let the next person in charge make all remaining necessary moves.

The fact that Antony has done essentially nothing in 9 going on 10 days is just head scratching. Not that I want him to make a splash, but I thought he would have made some moves of some kind.

So I wonder what's up with that--does he have cold feet, does he have basically an identical picture of the team that Ryan did, is he privy to other information about who the next GM is going to be and doesn't want to disturb the cart (remember how some people pretty confidently claimed that Molitor was the only candidate to be the next manager).

Either way, disappointing. Not even a Chargois call up yet.

Two questions: What spaces do the Twins need for 40-man adds in the off-season? And, who will actually play for the Twins in 2017.

Itdidn't take long for the Twins to not do anything significant with Aaron Thompson, Carlos QUentin, John Hicks, Murphy and Sweeney, DeLa Cruz, Runzler. And they managed to jettison Arcia, Mastro, Graham, Ramirez, Strong, O'Rourke, Fien, Jepsen from the 40-man already this season, with arguments made about keeping Graham, Fien and possibly Strong and losing (temporaily, Jones).

Okay...Rotation.

Santana (great contract, people should be fighting to add him to the back of your roster. A keeper veteran presence, but...

Nolasco...you have a failed investment and might want to squeeze more out of him or see if he can get any sort of value next season, but gone by 2018.

Milone, you probably could've avoided arbitration last fall, and don't need to arbitrate this fall.

Hughes is a long-term hope that he will produce in the next three seasons.

Duffey is struggling. Always felt he might be a candidate for long relief. Or is he the one-year-wonder of Scott Diamond or Albers or Kris Johnson.

Gibson...if he can get on track, will have trade value but don't see the need to the Twins going to year 3 arbitration or free agency. Sit on the sidelines and see if they can get a deal when another team passes on him.

Pat Dean is Pat Dean. I truly wanna know who would've grabbed him in last year's Rule 5.

CATCHER.

You don't keep Suzuki. He will be a free agent. If he can't find a $2 million job next year, maybe you consider.

Murphy is what we have, go with it.

Centeno and Paulino are replacement players.

Garver needs to be added and might be the future. Turner needs to get some major league experience.

INFIELD:

If someone wants Park, you eat the signing portion and move on. Can Vargas play first? Should Sano play first? Can Mauer play anywhere but first?

Dozier is still reasonable, and Polanco is the future. Is he the future in 2017 or 2018. He will be playing full seasons and going towards arbitration. We can take a looong look.

Escobar IS NOT the shortstop of the future. Pure placesetter. Nunez is a nice backup if he keeps hitting and would rather see him at third than Escobar if...

Sano goes down. Sano is showing life. He is the current third baseman. Plouffe will jsut be too expensive. If you want to keep Plouffe, you should've signed him long term. Let him walk in August and if you want him back, offer him something in the offseason. I would rather see Plouffe at first than Mauer, but not at $11 million a year.

Our future outfield is Rosario, Kepler, Buxton. Between Grossman or Santana as backup, I go with Grossman. Walker may have been passed by Palka. Harrison and Michael are moot.

Are Meyer or May closrs of starters? I don't see Kintzler as being nothing but luck. Tonkin and Pressly and Rogers can all be replaced by Burdi, Reed, Jones, Hildenberger, whatever...the question is when. Sooner rather than later, I say.

But the truth is...what the Twins have is trade pieces are not in demand. And if the Twins don't want them, why would someone else really care. Those that might see playing time elsewhere are so on the fringe, you ask yourself "do I trade with the Twins or elevate a prospect...or jsut watch the waiver wire...the Twins do...."

The Twins WILL NEED to clear roster space...5, 6, 7 names in the least. Who will go, who will get a look, who will stay, who will be added. Maybe the offseason will be exciting. But some of these moves CAN be made in the interim and not wait for a new Director of Player Operations and GM.

Besides Berrios, Chargois, Polanco I would add Park to the list that I would like back in the majors.  Why not have Mauer be a bench bat and pinch hit. Whether we lose 90 or 100 makes no difference. Vargas AND Park need major league at bats and both could out produce Mauer anyway.

I would have thought Antony wants to separate himself from his predecessor TR. Judging by the inactivity since he's taken over as interim, he looks like one of the same. Ultra conservative, unwilling to act like a true seller by waiting for others to call him. I'm beyond frustrated with the decisions and planning this season. Like you Nick, I want to see Berrios, Chargois, and Polanco called up yesterday. Please bring them up so there's something we can get excited about for the final 60+ games.

The Twins could still be active b4 the trade deadline. Most of the players the twins may trade are not the best options on the table. Other teams have better options that need to come off the table either by trade or asking price before the Twins pieces become options for teams.

I would like to see us go after a Rays pitcher personally. If we could package a deal that gives Tampa some hitting another solid arm would help towards contending in 2017 and we surely don't need all of our 1B/OF/DH options wasting away on the bench or AAA. Not sure what a good package would be cause we have a million guys log jammed at those positions but put a couple guys there and a top 10 prospect and maybe we get a Matt Moore or a Odorizzi. Pair them up with Allen again and who knows. We just need another pitcher if the plan is to compete. The Rays seem to develop pitching and we need it. Seems like a trade partner that makes sense.

Other GMs are almost certainly testing Antony. I suspect he is getting low level offers while these other GMs test him to see if he'll be easy to steal from.

I'm not a fan of inactivity, but I would rather he make wise moves than rash ones.
