"We’re in dire straits here"

It's not a real awe inspiring article. But it does shed some light on management's involvement.

"“Probably more than ever,” Ryan said of his talks with Pohlad.

"Some people are calling it panic. I get that, OK. We’re in a mode here where I better be creative enough to do some things to help along the cause. We’re struggling to a point where we haven’t been able to right it. So I’m going to have to do some things.”

I don't know if I would have called it "panic". I'm more of the mind that:

  1. Last year was a mirage.
  2. The remains of this team from the Metrodome days benefited a lot from that environment.
  3. The star prospects from the Minor leagues were probably overrated by us fans.

The fact that Ryan says ownership is concerned is something I don't remember ever hearing before. This following the Pohlad's "System wide failure" comment make me think that bigger changes are in the near future.

Terry Ryan and crew have been successful in the past. Post-Metrodome, that is rapidly becoming the distant past. Time to thank Ryan and company for their service to the Twins and the 2 World Series wins, but it's time to move forward with a fresh approach.

1) It was a mirage but probably around 4-6 wins. Perkins was so incredibly successful the first half. Other members of the pen, Boyer and Thompson, were very successful early.

2) Mauer's concussion radically shifted his aging curve.

3) Prospects require patience. The Twins have not had the patience to give many a half season at AAA before bringing them up. The path has been AA and then the majors and then return to AAA and bounce back and forth. Fans react to good or bad months when they have little meaning statistically. We might want to wait until age 26 before deciding if a prospect is overrated. It is fair to say Meyer was overrated. Guys like Arcia who made a top 100 list in only one season were really not rated that highly to begin with.

Agree with everything!

It's funny how things get taken out of context. In another thread, Ryan is bashed pretty hard about his Grossman comment. But in the full context of the article, there is really nothing all that inflammatory or overly congratulatory concerning the signing.

The term "panic" isn't a Ryan quote. He uses it, somewhat loosely, as a feeling for some fans, accurate or not. I actually find his comments to be some of the most open and honest comments I have ever heard from Ryan before.

What really strikes me about his honesty is almost a confession that his job may actually be on the line. What also hits home is that despite many, many comments on other threads currently, and in the past...and I have commented recently how those of us away from Minnesota and the Twin Cities may not have access to opinions and information others closer do...that the Pohlad family only cares about profit just may not be accurate. Or, even if you wish to be a Pohlad defeatist still, that the product on the field DOES matter.

I think this almost begs the question, what has to happen the rest of the season to NOT see a major change on top of the organization? I am beginning to think more and more that perhaps a change may indeed be coming.

The one part of Hit's post I will object to is over valuing our prospects as fans. While I can see that, and agree with it in regard to fans' relative impatience for a turnaround and relevancy again, I would disagree in regard to the actual prospect rankings and potential. These prospects are not just ranked highly by us as fans, but also by scouts and various basebalL scouts and publications as top prospects.
