The Roster Moves Are Coming, Aren't They?

Twins Video

Yesterday, the Minnesota Twins played one of the worst baseball games I have witnessed at the professional level for quite some time. With Phil Hughes leaving after five innings due to an injury, Tim Stauffer came on to take over. Handed a 7-3 lead, he promptly allowed two solo home runs (giving up three total runs), while getting just two outs. Casey Fien later allowed three more earned runs before leaving with an injury, and the Twins fell by a score of 10-7. Losing centerfield Jordan Schafer to injury in the game as well, the Twins looked to be hurting in every aspect. The assumption was that moves would be coming, but the matter now is when.

Looking at the game yesterday, the Twins watched as their two biggest deficiencies were exploited to an ugly extent. Having a below average defense hurt them on multiple occasions. Schafer and Oswaldo Arcia looked inept in the outfield, and a popup fell for a hit in the infield. Following a good start, the bullpen imploded giving up not only the lead, but also seven earned runs on 10 hits in just four innings. There's no doubt that Minnesota gave away a win yesterday, a chance at being a game within .500, and an opportunity for a second consecutive series win. With players like Stauffer and Schafer repeating those types of performances more often than not, Minnesota needs to make some changes.

It appeared initially that Paul Molitor and Terry Ryan may have had their hand finally forced. Losing Hughes, Schafer, and Fien all in the same game suggested that some moves would need to be made. For now however, it looks as if all three players should be able to overcome their setbacks in short order and avoid missing time. For the sake of the Twins however, injuries shouldn't dictate a certaint few moves being made.

Defense has been a problem all year, and it's only going to continue to be an issue. Minnesota has tried Schafer in center for plenty of time, and it's past the period of moving on. Aaron Hicks no doubt was the most sensible option in center for this club out of the gate, and it's time the Twins fix the mistake. Schafer is batting .188.204/.229, by all measurable standards, horrible doesn't being to describe that. Hicks is hitting .288/.385/.485 in Triple-A, and brings a plus level of defense to the field. His mental lapses can't happen, but Molitor can inflict that discipline on him. Shane Robinson makes sense as a fourth outfielder, and he's hit well even in a small sample size. Schafer has worn out his welcome in Minnesota, and Hicks should be up with the big league club within the next couple of weeks.

Despite snagging two hits yesterday, Kennys Vargas is slashing just .183/.246/.250. His power has not shown up, and he's been caught chasing pitches all over the plate. A trip to Triple-A to mash some breaking balls would probably do him well. Offering little at first base defensively, a switch to Trevor Plouffe or Chris Herrmann as the backup wouldn't be a big downgrade. In Rochester, Josmil Pinto continues to pound baseballs, and would immediately add a boost to the Twins lineup. Pinto is slashing .305/.397/.373. On top of that, he's thrown out 2-8 would be base stealers, and has allowed just one passed ball in 14 games. Pinto has little to prove on the farm and should also be with the big league club before the middle of May.

If Minnesota wants to be able to hang onto leads, a bullpen shakeup is going to be necessary. Rather than continuing to mutter that the club is looking for help, a quick glance at the farm would do the Twins well. Terry Ryan took fliers on Blaine Boyer and Tim Stauffer likely with the idea he could turn them into something later in the season (a la Sam Fuld). We can see that's not going to happen with Stauffer. His 8.38 ERA is horrid and just keeps climbing. DFA'ing Stauffer sometime soon would probably be the best practice. Boyer has looked sharper of late, and the Twins could still get value out of him if he can continue along that path. It's not a guarantee though, and there shouldn't be much of a leash there either.

The Twins bullpen is currently void of power arms, and the ones they could have taken north are in Triple-A. Michael Tonkin currently owns a 2.45 ERA with Rochester, and is striking out batters at a 12.3 K/9 clip (he is now taking over in the pen for Casey Fien who will hit the DL). Ryan Pressly's 4.50 ERA isn't where you'd like it to be, but it's only been 10 innings. He does however have a 13.5 K/9 and owned a 2.86 ERA for the Twins in 2014. Finally, Lester Oliveros owns a 1.04 ERA with Rochester, and has struck out batters at a ridiculous 17.7 K/9 rate. You could probably throw A.J. Achter into this group as well, and make the argument that all of them are better bullpen options than a handful of the guys the Twins currently are running out there. I'd expect to see at least one of them with the big league club within the next two weeks.

At the end of the day, it's a sad situation if it ultimately becomes injuries that force the Twins briantrust to make necessary moves. With that in mind however, this team needs to stretch wins in its favor by putting their most competitive lineup on the field each night. Running low-ceiling guys out there hoping they don't get burnt isn't a good practice. It by no means is time for the kids (check out how Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano are hitting, the rust needs to come off first), but there's significantly better options in the organization than what the major league team has gone with. Let's get those moves queued up.

Terry Ryan is just being stubborn at this point.  After last nights disaster Tim Stauffer should be DFA'd no ifs ands or butts.  PERIOD!  Guy is absolutely HORRIBLE and has blown multiple games for this team already.  There is absolutely NO REASON that he should pitch in any more games.  I've seen enough.  You?

The outfield isn't much better.  The sight of Arcia, Schafer and Hunter day in and day out is almost vomit inducing.  Not only are they hitting poorly, but they are making boneheaded decisions that have nothing to do with talent level.  Inexcusable.

Schafer flat out stinks.  I think it's time to call up Hicks and just pray that this time around he sticks.  Send Vargas down to AAA for a while with the hope that he figures things out and move Arcia over to DH temporarily and callup Rosario.  Let Arcia and Rosario split time at LF & DH.

Stauffer should be DFA'd soon, but I'd agree with you, that it's not soon enough. I think that both Boyer and Stauffer were seens as guys they could potentially turn into value, but at least for Stauffer, it hasn't worked out. He needs to go.

Hunter's bat absolutely has to show up. I think it will, it's only been a month, but still. Arcia will hit too, but he's a defensive liability. Putting a bad centerfielder in Schafer between them only compounds the problem.

I don't know Schafer's situation (options/etc.) but think a DFA needs to happen there too. Hicks should have started the season in CF and needs to be there down. A Vargas/Pinto swap would be good with me. Rosario is a call up I like to happen soon, but I'd like to see him do a little more at the plate first.

Arcia needs to be in the field. Move Hunter to DH. Unfortunately tidiest sound like Rosario has shown he's ready to take over LF yet. They gotta do something though... This is unwatchable futility in the field.

Where have the Twins been hiding Graham and Thielbar in all of these messes. Really. If a guy is in a major league bullpen, you shouldn't be afraid to use them. You CAN get by with one place-setting, like a Graham, who should be having plenty of opportunity to pitch. Instead you keep dragging out Thompson and Fien and Stauffer and Boyer for repeated abusing and wearing these guys out. Which is okay if it means we will see a mound off fresh arms (not worn out) from Rochester or beyond as the season progresses.

Something isn't wonderful with Hughes. Would it be okay to shut him down for 3-5 starts and workout in Florida and throw a few minor league innings? The Twins have no shortage of starting pitchers right now (if May is really okay).

Schafer talked himself into staying in the dugout as a defensive replacement or pinch runner or something. He hasn't filled the bill. His best bet it to go on the disabled list and collect and check, and maybe spend a week or so at Rochester and see if the Twins and him still need to be buddies. Let us have the opportunity to not have him stinking up the place.

Not that we don't have enough guys doing that. Nunez is a guy with no real purpose on the roster. Escobar is a shortstop, plain and simple, without a job. He works as a backup, but we are getting inconsistent production. We don't need to find a place or an inning for him to play if we can be solid, and we are pretty solid everywhere but...designated hitter.

Vargas needs more seasoning. We can bring up Pinto. Let him catch and see if he can stop a base stealer (since our other guys can't). It means we have Herrmann and Suzuki designated hitting. It means we have no real backup at first. But, hey, we really don't know.

Don't cater to guys with injuries. You either play today or go on the disabled list. There are others to take your place. We don't want you to play injured. We want you to get better and then grab back your roster spot. Another batter gets injured today, we have no bench. It happened last year. Too often.

Let's get that shuttle rolling. Hey, maybe we can see the return of Wilkin Ramirez, or get a taste of Reynaldo Rodriguez, in the near future!

And, yes, I know Wilkin hasn't played yet this year...holding down the invisible designated hitter spot in Rochester!

I'll do my best to respond paragraph by paragraph here. As far as hiding Graham and Thielbar, I think the Twins are really only hiding one. Graham pitched for the first time last night since April 19. He's a Rule 5 guy with upside who's never pitched above AA. They want him in the organization, but need to keep him on the 25 man to do so. Stauffer likely is DFA'd by next week when Duensing comes back, so there will be new arms.

Concern for Hughes is overblown. He's pitching better to start 2015 than he did in 2014. His strained hip flexor should be minor and he should be fine.

I can't stand Jordan Schafer, and I'm probably the biggest Aaron Hicks supporter out there. I'd be fine with DFA'ing Schafer tomorrow. No matter what, the centerfield role should be between Hicks and Robinson.

Nunez was a guy the Twins could have gotten creative with from the get go. A guy like Dayan Viciedo could have been had and would have been a better option. Nunez existing because of a high AVG in a small sample size is silly.

Pinto swapped for Vargas makes sense, he needs to be able to hit through his struggles at AAA. Herrmann and Plouffe can both back up first, and while Pinto isn't slated for there yet, I think first base may be his long term home.

The Twins have been poor with roster management early on this season. Take for instance when Nolasco went down and the Twins called up May. May was going to make a start on a Monday, but they called him up on Saturday. They could have had two days of fresh pen arms instead.

The biggest problem is that both Hunter and Arcia's biggest asset to the Twins is their bats, and neither has really claimed a stake as of yet. Both are hitting below where they should be. It needs to show up sooner rather than later.

Pinto has had plenty of opportunity to show he can stop a base stealer or do anything you would expect a big league catcher to do defensively.  A small sample of that opportunity has been in the big leagues and nearly 10 years in the minor leagues.  HE CAN'T.  He's a DH.  Nothing more.  Deal with it.

While it's easy to blame base running on Pinto as he's been atrocious, some of the best Twins pitcher rank worst in holding runners on. He has higher caught stealing rates than both of the Twins current catchers in 2015. While I'm not arguing Pinto is a defensive catcher by any means, flying off the handle the other way is shortsighted as well.

I am still of the belief that his long term spot is probably at first base.
