What to do about 1B? (or, Parmy and Cola and Mauer, oh my!)

Twins Video

Both Chris Colabello and Chris Parmelee have absolutely raked in AAA, Parmelee last year and Colabello this year. Most players with those kinds of statistics in AAA can be successful in MLB.

Not all. It doesn’t always work. The way Parmelee hit this year is certainly a concern. Was the sudden inability to hit caused by a change in his approach or the approach the pitchers take to him?

Is Colabello going to start hitting MLB pitching like he belongs there? He has an .863 OPS in his last 14 days covering 39 PA, but you can always find a bright spot if your Sample Size is Small enough.

And whatever you believe about the above questions, do you:

1. insist on putting the 5’ 10” Arcia at 1B?

2. sign Justin Morneau?

3. leave the position to Mauer?

4. put Colabello there and expect him to win the position?

5. Put forth a different solution not mentioned here?

I anxiously await the profound wisdom I just know will soon be coming my way.

I can't see Joe ever giving up catching. He is too stubborn. When we make our move, I believe Parmelee and Colabello will be long gone. I have no problem with Justin coming back on a team friendly deal. I understand RBI's no longer have any meaning, but you still need a guy who hits the ball that causes his teammates to cross the plate. There is no metric for veteran leadership. Good blog Oldgoat_MN.

1)No. RF or DH for Arcia

2)No, I Think a platoon of Calobello and Parmalee with a sprinking of Mauer or even Plouffle is a decent patchwork until someone steps ups and takes the position. I wouldn't be againist signing Morneau. He might be too expansive for TR though.

3)Maybe. If his concussion(s) continue to be a problem

4)Maybe. I think he can and would be a really cool story. His AAA numbers are silly. He deserves a shot.

5)No. I think we have enough options at least for next year (another non-competing year)

Abreau

Sano (no guarantee he can play 3B)

Plouffe

I really think it will be Mauer. Brain injuries trump stubborn.

I agree that brain injuries trump stubborn.

Also, I have read that ESPN people say Sano's arm is too strong to hide at 1B.

If he cannot stay at 3B they want to see him in RF.

I'd like to see a way to keep Colabello and Parmelee as a platoon 1B, part-time RF (Parms), part-time DH combo. It would give us added pop off the bench. I'm not sure this can happen unless they don't keep 3 catchers or don't keep a backup OF who can play CF. This would also assume that Escobar is the lone utility IF. The chances would be better if they deal Willingham or Doumitt.

Plouffe maybe, no way you stick Sano at 1B yet.
