Twins Offseason Checklist

It's been a quiet offseason here in Minnesota. Fans are getting disappointed. (But trying to stay loyal.) So let's just take a step back and think about what we need, what we've done, and what we still have to do.

Starting Pitching: You might think that nothing's happened here, but it really has. At the beginning of the offseason, the Twins had a rotation that just consisted of Berrios. Now it has Odorizzi, Berrios, and Pineda. Of course, you can't have a rotation with only three pitchers. And since Pineda still has to serve 39 games of his suspension, which will last until mid-May, they have a rotation with 2 pitchers in it until he comes back. Of course, they have a lot of internal options here such as Randy Dobnak or Devin Smeltzer. So that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Backup Catcher: This is one of the only satisfying thing about this offseason. The Twins got Alex Avila, who is a very good catcher, and the perfect replacement for veteran catcher Jason Castro, who was a free agent this year. (Has no one gotten Castro yet? He's a pretty good catcher, someone should get him.) The Twins have a reliable catcher for when Garver needs to take a day off. Definitely the high point of this offseason... I heard Avila was even better than Castro!

Corner Infield: This is the one that we've all been thinking about lately. Now that the Twins and Nationals made offers to Josh Donaldson, we're just waiting to see if Atlanta offers the fourth year that Donaldson is looking for. If not, then the Twins or Nationals will probably get him. If not, the Twins could look into trade options to replace C.J Cron, who is now a Detroit Tiger. (Dang, I kind of liked Cron and Jonathan Schoop, who's also a Tiger now. Do I have to not like them anymore?) The Twins are also considering moving Miguel Sano to first, because his defense was really poor at third.

So, the Twins still need two starters (or one? Maybe Dobnak or Smeltzer could fill the last spot?) and a corner infielder. (Hopefully Donaldson! Fingers crossed!) On a scale of one to ten, I rate this offseason a 3. What's your rating? What do you think about this?

I rate it incomplete. The Twins had impact starting pitcher in the list and it isn't done yet. Also 1B/3B needs to be resolved. There are lots of options for the corner IF and they all but Donaldson replace what we got for Cron so at worst we will be even there. If we get Donaldson then it's a big Improvement.

Our bullpen is improved as we get Romo and Clippard for the year.

On the rotation while we are hoping for a big upgrade, finding pitchers to outperform what Gibson and Martin gave us last year needs to happen at minimum. Incremental improvements on a 101 win team should be as good as we can do. Donaldson is the variable at this point which can swing our off-season pendulum.

I rate it a 7 so far. They only thing keeping it down is a starting pitching acquisition. Bullpen and 2nd catcher acquisitions are excellent. Upgrading from what Gibson and Perez provided last year should be easy to do since we still have our prospects and 20-30 million to spend. If we can't land Donaldson (which I doubt) we can still replace Cron with a Mitch Moreland or Todd Frazier signing. That would leave plenty of money to take on salary in a trade for pitching. Have to get creative

Gibson was horrible last year in his last few starts; I had to shut the tv off rather than watch him nitpick on the corners.  He had no trust in his stuff, for good reason when he did throw strikes which resulted in hot smashes.  If we can't do better than Gibson then we won't win 90 ball games.

I don't disagree with the belief that we have exciting young arms that could fill in in the rotation. I also think it's fair to hold that belief, as well as the belief that if we trust 2+ rookies to start 40% of our games the year after winning 101 games, that's just a blatant failure. We just watched the Indians do this last season with their outfield to try to save money. They wound up digging themselves a hole and having to fix it at the deadline and it was too late.

We have a young core of players coming off career years. We don't have anything resembling a high payroll. We've watched this team lose for years, and we've finally watched one win. I'd be excited to start those young guys if this were 2015, but this team had very few issues last season to address, most of which were the starting rotation. It was a fantastic year for free agent pitching and we had money to spend. There's not really a way to spin a 101 win team handing the keys to rotation spots to a combination of 3 guys who totaled under 100 innings in their entire major league careers. Basically my argument is that if you won't increase payroll to improve this team now, you're not going to. Period. If you're decreasing payroll after winning 101 games and trusting Dobnak, Thorpe, and Smeltzer to play significant roles on this team, you're gambling away the season, division title, and good faith of the fanbase.

I think the rookies from last year are all better than Gibson and Perez. That's a low bar to clear though, and not the goal the front office should have going into the year.

I'd rate the off-season to date a 4 out of 10 (a 5 rating would be the team holding about the same from last season and a 4 is being slightly worse). The really sad part is this is the off-season where the team needed to go for it and try to make the jump to legitimate world series contention level. At the moment it seems unlikely the Twins have much chance in any playoff series.

The Twins have signed 50 per cent of the starting pitchers needed, except one of them will be suspended 25% of the season. The most effective starting pitchers, who were free agents have been signed by other teams. At first glance, many feel this was a failure by the Twins front office. However, after examining each free agent starting pitcher, one by one, I don't think it was a failure by the front office. It takes two to tango. Each signed FA pitcher had his own agenda: location, horses, location, family, location, taxes, $324 million dollars, location which dictated each pitcher's decision to sign elsewhere. I am confident in the young pitchers who are available in the Twins' system. There will be some disappointments, as there are every year. However I believe there are enough Twins system quality staring pitchers who can put speed, location, movement, location, location and spin on a baseball and who should be ordered to pitch what the catcher calls at the location which the catcher specifies...so that the Twins will once again win 100 ball games this year and will advance to the World Series in October 2020.
