Springtime Hope Blooms In The Bullpen

It’s still early in spring training – early enough so that our eyes could be fooling us from this bright sun thing – but maybe there’s some hope for the Twins bullpen after all.   The bullpen has been a sore spots for Twins fans for…wow…how long has it been? This offseason, obviously. Last season, for sure. 2010 was a bit of respite, though there was enough panic to trade away Ramos Wilson for Matt Capps. In 2009 it struggled beyond Joe Nathan and Matt Guerrier. 2008 was REALLY bad up until Jose

When Do Fans Get Excited For A New Baseball Season?

Originally posted at http://troystwinsdugout.wordpress.com/2012/03/14/When-Do-Fans-Get-Excited-For-A-New-Baseball-Season/     With the unseasonably warm weather we’ve been having, I’ve been pondering on the Question. When Do fans get excited for a baseball season? The answers to this are numerous and I think it depends on the fan. There are those fans that just like to be at a baseball game, but I think more of them get excited when the weather gets warmer or when the players start to get ready

Do the Twins Need to Hire a Sports Psychologist?

[Originally posted at Twins Fan From Afar]   Much has been made over the past year or so of the physical injuries suffered by the Twins, especially injuries to Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, Denard Span and, to a lesser extent Francisco Liriano. All of these players had a tough time staying in the lineup last season, and we are hoping for better health this year. But that might only be half the battle.     In yesterday's Spring Training game, for example, Liriano was perfect for two innings (strikin

The Rise and "Fall" of Aaron Hicks

There are few Twins prospects who frustrate Twins fans as much as Aaron Hicks. He was extremely highly regarded when he was drafted and he has not performed at the level he was expected to, even at a young age. But upon examining Hicks in more detail, it seems clear that people need to hold off on the criticism--he's about right where he needs to be and there is a recent precedent for a breakout career.   Aaron Hicks: switch hitter, 6'2", 185, DOB: 10/2/89 (Age: 22.5) Aaron Hick minor league st

And we'll see ya

I am looking ahead a little bit, but if you look at the Twins schedule early in the year, look out! The begin the season in Baltimore, that is fine, but then look what the schedule holds for us in order: Home, Angels (3) Home, Rangers (3) Away, Yankees (4) Away, Rays (3) Home, Red Sox (3) Home, Royals (3) Away, Angels (3) Away, Mariners (3) Home, Angels (3) Home, Blue Jays (4) That is very ugly, if you look realistically at that beginning I am seeing a start for the Twins reco

Looking for Breakout Seasons

This was originally posted at Knuckleballs   By this point, everyone knows the variables that will determine whether the Twins will have a successful 2012 season, right? Mauer, Morneau, Baker and Span have to stay healthy and the bullpen needs to be vastly improved over last year. We know all of that because every beat writer, columnist and blogger has pointed at those issues over and over again since October.   Sure, if the established veterans all return to the level of productivity we’ve come

Random Tuesday Twins Thoughts and Tidbits

This is a weekly feature at The Tenth Inning Stretch and originally published there ----   Here is this week's installment (also heavily influenced by Spring Training) : Tomorrow is the first minor league spring training day. There are a series of games at the AAA, AA and A level all against the Boston Red Sox' affiliates; also expect the first cuts of Spring Training to be announced today. We all heard of long bus rides for the players to away parks in Spring Training, but if you want to have

Twins play small ball right?....

I have always been perplexed through recent years with the Twins so called approach of doing the "little" things to win baseball games. We were even called the piranhas by Ozzie (man....I already miss him) and had those Punto type guys who had no pop what so ever, but played the game right. I wont focus on the defensive side because I believe the Twins deserve credit through the years for being a top notch defensive teams with last year being the exception. Now with target field and two years

A Spring Training Report From A Civil War Era Soldier.

12 March, 2012.   Ft. Myers, Florida.     I trust this Letter finds you Well and in Good Health and Spirit. Tell Mother I miss her Hot Dish Casserole every Day.   I fear this Baseball Season will be what We feared it would be when this Spring Training Campaign began. It is now mid-March, as you can see, and we are still faced with the same Questions of last Year's horrid and shameful Defeat.   The Artillery was splendid yesterday, on 11 March 2012, but surely that one sublime Gift of Providence

Which Danny Valencia will Show Up in 2012?

[Originally posted at Twins Fan From Afar]   The Twins had some encouraging Spring Training results over the weekend. I realize that Spring Training games don't count for anything -- they are, in fact, for "training." That's why you see guys taking a lot of pitches, just trying to get their timing down, or you might see a pitcher throw a curveball five times in a row. These guys are trying to get ready for the season, not trying to set Grapefruit League records. But still, tangible results are a

Unrelated Cross-Promotion.

Last year, as some of you know, I wrote an online novel called The HooseCows. It's about an independent league baseball team where broken ballplayers try to find peace dealing with ballpark ghosts and bad people. It's available at http://www.cfcows.com. Currently, I'm preparing it for publication.   The problem is I missed writing fiction, and I wanted to write something else. I missed having a story to tell, so there was only one thing to do . . .   The new story will have under 5% baseball, an
