Who will be on the 20-man taxi squad?

With a total of 60 players, the Twins will have 30, then 32 and 34 theoretically, players off playing somewhere like CHS field. Of these, some will be on the 40-man roster, and twenty will be on the taxi-squad. I'm guessing the taxi squad will consist of a mixture of minor league signings and important prospects.

 

Whom do you project to be on that 20-man taxi squad?

 

Also, how does the taxi squad fit with the rules of the 40-man roster? I've seen that asked but not answered. If the Twins need a player from the taxi squad for five days, how is the roster affected?

 

I would guess Larnach, Kirilloff, Balazovic, Lewis, for example, would make the taxi squad simply to have them playing.

I think the ratio of Pitchers to hitters is pretty close. With few off days, you’ll need more pitchers for the double headers and 7 game weeks.

One name I think you missed, Danchat, is Nick Gordon. Also expect you will see one of the veteran catchers scheduled for Rochester on the taxi squad as insurance against Garver getting injured.

 

With the rule that one of three taxi squad members traveling must be a catcher, you may see Astudillo as that player and not on the 30-man.

I still wonder why they donb't have a summer camp for minor league guys at Ft. Myers. They are getting paid. There is housing available. Multiple fields of play. You could do it like summer isolation camp. 30 days of play. Maybe even as much as 60. Just have to keep them under lock-and-key so to speak. Intrasquad games according to skill level. 

 

The key to coronavirus is testing, then tracing. Social distancing and masking fine, but if yuou create a virus free environment - a bubble so to speak - and it has been done. Just have to watch the use of outside vendors delivering things.

I actually have Gordon on the 30 man opening day roster.

 

You might be right about the catcher situation, so I’d expect Tomas Telis to be on the squad rather than one of the younger catchers.

With the limitations teams will face with almost no place to go for players, if needed, I expect they will go heavy on catchers. They are blessed with lots of players on the 30-man that can play so many positions, I think they will keep at least six catchers out of their 60. Astudillo would make 3 on the 30-man with Jeffers, Rortvedt and Telis on the taxi squad.

I think you can get a sense for the "right" ratio by looking not at the historically normal mixture on the active roster, but by looking historically at the number of pitchers vs position players used during a season.  From that perspective, I don't think you're pitcher heavy at all.  As others have said, I think that's an excellent guess.
