Create Your Own Offseason Blueprint

Nick Nelson

Recommended Posts

Hey gang!

Hopefully by now you've all downloaded your copy of the 2019 Offseason Handbook (if not, you can grab it here). Now, it's time to put all that information to use.

Over the coming weeks, you'll find several different blueprints on TD's front page highlighting various approaches the front office might take this winter. We also want to hear your plans for building the Twins into a contender.

You can use the names and estimates in the Handbook (or your own, if you please) to create a vision and share it here (you can also write your blueprint up in the Blogs section of the site and link to it here). Feel free to go into as much depth with the rationales as you please, but every submission should include these these components:

1) List of moves (trades, signings, extensions, etc.)

2) 2019 Opening Day roster (lineup, bench, rotation, bullpen)

3) 2019 Opening Day payroll

We look forward to seeing all your ideas!

I like it.  When I was doing mine the hardest thing I had to choose between was giving Dozier a one year, "make good" deal or investing in Iglesias.

I just wonder if his price tag is going to be a lot higher than we think this year.

I originally guessed higher on earlier threads, but both sources I looked at had him going for less.  Last year's market certainly worked that way, but that was a different year.

OK...after trying to keep up making a sheet for every BluePrint added I'll try sharing the sheet

You Be the GM Team BluePrint Toolkit

Brief/Incomplete instructions for use:

Make a Copy of the Google Sheet if you like

or

Duplicate the "DUPLICATE THIS SHEET" before making your changes...PLEASE

Click on Player Name or Open Cell left of a Position

Start typing in a name

Click on the player you want for that roster spot

Contract info will fill in across the sheet

IF you don't agree with the Contract Info you can enter your own numbers for each year

Be sure to enter Salary info in full number in order for it to add correctly $15M entered as 15000000

NOTE: This will remove the formulas and won't grab the info if you change players names later on...you'll have to manually add the salary

I've attempted to include every player and their contract per Cots (should update live when they make changes)

I have updated the Twins players a little more than the rest of the league with contract info for younger players

ARB Eligible Salaries from MLBTR

Free Agent listings from MLBTR, TD, and Heyman (only because he put it out there first)

When multiple sites had predictions preference is: MLBTR, TD, Heyman

I've added every Minor Leaguer in the Twins System for those that want to add Nick Gordon at the estimated MLB Minimum Salary

Use as is no guarantees it will do what you want...but it works for me

Any questions or issues message me and I might try to fix it :)

Thank you to everyone for posting your blueprints-they are a lot of fun to look at. I am not a very smart human being, so I am going to list my plan without the exact numbers. So here we go.

*Trade*

I've gone back and forth with this, but ultimately decided that the juice would be worth the squeeze. We give up a boatload to get 2 years of Realmuto, because it is going to take a boatload to get him.

Twins receive Realmuto for Gordon, Gonsalves, Romero and Kepler

FA Signings:

We get outbid on Cruz, Donaldson, Miller and the top SPs.

IF: Daniel Murphy 2/28

Util: Marwin Gonzalez 3/42

RP: Adam Ottovino 3/39

RP: Zach Britton 2/30

SP: Garrett Richards 2/10

Not sure how much Realmuto will make the next 2 years, but all in all, we spend about $61 million in FA. Richards is our "Pineda signing."

Extensions:

We buy low on Buxton and Sano, at the same time showing them that we want them as a big part of our future.

Buxton: 6/84

Sano: 6/72

Another $26 million here.

With all the moves together, we add about $90 million. Here's what we would look like:

C: Realmuto/Castro/Garver (is Garver out of options?)

1B; Murphy/Gonzalez/Austin

2nd: Murphy/Polanco/Gonzalez

SS: Polanco/Gonzalez

3B: Sano/Gonzalez

Util: Adrianza

OF: Gonzalez/Buxton/Rosario/Cave/Wade/Rooker (5th OF comes down to Wade/Rooker/Kiriloff in spring training)

SP: Berrios/Gibson/Odorizzi/Pineda/Mejia

RP: Britton/Ottovino/Reed/Hildenberger/Rogers/Busenitz/May/Moya

Not likely, but here we go. I made some investments in fairly sure things, took some calculated risks, and begged and pleaded for Donaldson, Ryu and Familia to come to Minnesota. The trade I made was Kepler and Gonsalves for Raisel Iglesias. I also toyed with trading for Jean Segura, but I couldn't decide what was feasible (and if I knew I probably wouldn't do it). I'm not terribly comfortable with Reed as 4th OF; I could see spending a few million on a 4th OF instead of Sergio Romo.

C - Castro (8.0)

      Garver (0.6)

IF - Sano (3.1)

      Polanco (0.6)

      Donaldson (20.0)

      Iglesias (9.0)

      Adrianza (1.8)

      Austin (0.6)

OF - Rosario (5.0)

        Buxton (1.2)

       Cave (0.6)

       Reed (0.6)

Next up position players: Astudillo, Wade, Gordon, Rooker

SP - Berrios (0.6)

        Gibson (7.9)

        Odorizzi (9.4)

       Pineda (8.0)

       Ryu (11.0)

RP - Reed (8.5)

        Hildenberger (0.6)

        Moya (0.6)

        Rogers (1.6)

        Iglesias (5.7)

       May (1.1)

       Familia (11.0)

       Romo (3.0)

Next up pitchers: Romero, Littell, Stewart, Thorpe, Mejia, Magill, Curtiss, Vasquez, Duffey, etc.

Dead money and buyouts (8.0)

Total: $128

Oh, and The One From Crazytown:

Some of the same names as my other one, but also: trade away Castro and A. Reed and pile on enough prospects until someone eats their salaries. Same proviso as my other one, the last few million could go to a 4th OF or LH bat instead of Romo.

C - Astudillo (0.6)

Garver (0.6)

IF - Sano (3.1)

Polanco (0.6)

Donaldson (20.0)

Machado (30.0)

Adrianza (1.8)

Austin (0.6)

OF - Rosario (5.0)

Buxton (1.2)

Cave (0.6)

Reed (0.6)

Next up position players: Wade, Gordon, Rooker

SP - Berrios (0.6)

Gibson (7.9)

Odorizzi (9.4)

Pineda (8.0)

Ryu (11.0)

RP - Hildenberger (0.6)

Moya (0.6)

Rogers (1.6)

Iglesias (5.7)

May (1.1)

Familia (11.0)

Romo (3.0)

Curtiss, or Duffey, or Magill, or whoever (0.6)

Next up pitchers: Romero, Littell, Stewart, Thorpe, Mejia, Magill, Curtiss, Vasquez, Duffey, etc.

Dead money and buyouts (8.0)

Total: $134 or so

Obviously, this one has some problems. No way Twins go into the season with Garver and Tortuga as the catchers. Signing Machado for infinity also severely limits the ability to offer extensions in coming years to Berrios, Rosario, Gibson, Sano, Buxton, etc. Pretty thin bullpen.

Everyone seems to be leaving off Mejia ... is there a reason for that or just forgetting that he’s out of options? He will get claimed if just ‘let go’ so either he’s on the team or he’s traded. I think he’s shown promise of being a solid pitcher. He won’t be a top end starter but I think he can provide something somewhere.

I have him as our #5 after we trade for Realmuto :)

Round 3.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mGWZ2_41dCPV4ZnoMBRIPyJbQYAyQN8pc3pDfix16XY/edit?usp=sharing

Does this link work? (edit: apparently not)

Payroll comes to $123M.

In general terms, this scenario means:

-trading Kepler and Gonsalves (could be Cave and any one of Romero, Littell, Stewart, Mejia, etc) for Raisel Iglesias.

-signing one of MILLER/BRITTON/Robertson/Familia/Soria/Kelly

-signing one of Corbin/Kuechel/HAPP/Morton and (opt) signing Cahill and trading Odorizzi

or

signing Ryu/Eovaldi

-signing Jose Iglesias

-signing Moustakas and Melky Cabrera (if Donaldson or MCCUTCHEON/Brantley would be willing to sign add $10M to payroll)

My general assumption is that Donaldson/Brantley/McCutcheon/Corbin/Kuechel/Ryu won't sign with the Twins. Trade away Kepler and bring in Cabrera to platoon with Cave. Trading away Odorizzi brings back ? I only bring in Cahill/trade Odorizzi if I can bring in established, healthy SP (e.g. Happ). If Donaldson/McCutcheon/Brantley won't sign, extensions to Gibson/Rosario/Berrios are very much in play.

Just go nuts with a bullpen.

Add: Patrick Corbin - SP (5 years)
Add: Jeurys Familia - RP (2 years)
Add: David Robertson - RP (2 years)
Add: Kelvin Herrera - RP (2 years)
Add: Tony Sipp - RP (2 years)
Add: Daniel Murphy - 2B (2 years)
Add: Josh Donaldson - DH (3 years)
Trade: Jason Castro - C
Trade: Robbie Grossman - LF
Trade: Tyler Duffey - RP
AAA: Gabriel Moya - RP
AAA: Trevor Hildenberger - RP
AAA: Alan Busenitz - RP

Note: Garver and Astudillo at Catcher. No Castro. If we are moving Garver away from C due to concussions, then trade both Garver and Castro, and sign Wilson Ramos to a 2-year deal.

I have Mejia as a long reliever in my post which i put on a different thread and now cant find it.  so i will post a recap here.

2b  I like Kinsler the most for defense and some offense.  can come on a 1 year and go into mentor roll if Lewis or Gordon come up and take away playing time later in the year.  but also have Marvin Gonzales, or Dozier, or Iglesias at SS as other options.

1B  as a second 1B to platoon with Austin we could sign Reynolds to a cheap 1 year deal.  (this is so 1B is not blocking Rooker after the year if he is ready to come up)

for CF insurance I like Jon Jay or Denard Span  both have OBP ability as does Grossman but these two guys play better Defense.  They can be 4th OF or fill in if Buxton doesnt cut it this year.

DH  Nelson Cruz

Trade for SP.  I like the idea of going after Paxton to clear some prospect clutter or going after Sony Grey.

For the bullpen we can sign a closer like Familia and another reliever like Clippard

lineup

CF.  Buxton  1.5 million

SS.  Polanco   .6 million

3B  Sano       1.5 million

DH  Nelson Cruz  2 year 30 million or 15 million in 2019

1B  Austin  600k and Reynolds  3 million

LF  Rosario  3 million

RF  Kepler  2 million

2B  Kinsler  10 Million

C   Garver 600 K,  Castro  8.5 million

rest of Bench

OF Grossman, Span or Jay  4 million

C  see above

1B  Reynolds see above  or Astudillo  .55 million

IF Adrianza  2 million

rotation

Berrios  600k

Gibson  3 year 40 million extension 10 million in 2019 followed by 2 years of 15 million.

Grey  9.1 million

Pineda  8 million

Odorizzi 9 million

With Romero and Mejia ready to step in if needed

bullpen

Familia   11 million

Clippard  6 million

Rogers  1.5 million

Reed  8.5 million

Hildenberger 600k

May  1.5 million

the last two spots are likely to go to Mejia and McGill with Curtis, Moya, Vasquez and Businetz at the ready

The payroll should be under 110 million in this scenario give or take a few errors with the arbitration numbers as i dont know what a few of these guys should make next year  namely Rosario and Kepler  Also there is back up at several key spots though having Reynolds play 3B again at this point if Sano gets hurt may be a stretch.  Adrianza and Astudillo could play third as well though a good back up 3B isnt on the list.  though Kinsler could move there and we bring up Gorden for 2B....

Am I too late? I get a freebie on Cron, but I’m submitting before the winter meetings. Hat tip to Leviathan, I copied and pasted your format.

Offseason:

Sign OF Michael Brantley, 3yr/45M

Sign RP David Robertson 3y/33M

Sign RP Andrew Miller 3yr/27M

Sign 2B/1B/DH Daniel Murphy 2yr/20M

Sign SS Jose Iglesias 2yr/16M

[Claim CJ Cron, arb 5.2M]

Total additions by Free Agency - 141M; 53M for 2019, 53M for 2020, 35M for 2021

Trade: Send Max Kepler, Fernando Romero, Nick Gordon and Jason Castro to the Mets for Noah Syndergaard. Not sure if this is enough, but I think the Twins brass is looking for a high-end starter and isn’t afraid to trade players to get there. Might need to add one of Lewis/Kirilloff/Graterol to get it done...which should be considered)

Total financial additions by trade: -6.2M.

Roster: (52.7M)

Catcher: Garver 600k (Astudillo)

1B - Cron 5.2M (Murphy, Austin)

2B - Polanco 600K / (Murphy)

3B - Sano 3.1M (Iglesias)

SS - Iglesias 8M (Polanco)

DH - Murphy 10M (Austin, Cron, Sano)

OF - Brantley 15M

OF - Buxton 1.2M

OF - Rosario 5M

Bench: Austin, Cave, Adrianza, Astudillo (Total 3.6M)

vs. RHP - Brantley, Polanco, Murphy, Rosario, Sano, Cron, Garver, Buxton, Iglesias

vs. LHP - Buxton, Polanco (SS) Sano, Cron (DH) Austin (1B) Garver, Brantley, Rosario, Murphy (2b)

Rotation: (31.8M)

Syndergaard 5.9M

Berrios 600k

Gibson 7.9M

Odorizzi 9.4M

Pineda 8M

(Next up: Mejia/Gonsalves/Littel)

Bullpen (33)

Robertson 11

Miller 9

May 1.1

Rogers 1.6

Hildenberger 600k

Reed 8.5

Moya 600k

Mejia 600K

Old contracts/buyouts: Hughes/Santana/Morrison: $8M

Not sure if these count against the total payroll or not, but let’s add them in.

Total payroll - $124.5M

I think this creates a pretty flexible lineup. Maybe could use a bigger LH bat for the lineup at 1B/DH, but pretty good overall.

Rotation suddenly looks really solid with a true #1. Pineda has real upside.

Bullpen could be very strong with those two additions (and a Reed bounce back).

My blueprint would be mostly based on what we have already, since the Twins have a full 40 man atm anyways. First priority change though is signing Marwin Gonzalez for Utility. Or if not him, would like to see as a backup move, signing Moustakas as a left power bat that can man 3rd; then have Sano basically DH, while backing up 3rd and 1st occasionally. Also would like to see us either sign a lefty starter, or try out Meija as our 5th starter, since he is. Then at that point just sign a legit tweener starter/reliever for innings and constistancy. To make room, I'd release Adrianza for Gonzalez, or Wade for Moustakas. Curtis would be 1st to release from our current pitching options. Then try May as a closer, with Moya as setup, see who sticks. Not going to predict trades...

SP-Gibson, Berrios, Pineda, Odorizzi, Meija/TBD

RP-Duffy, Hildenberger, Rogers, Reed, TBD,

Closer- May/Moya

C-Castro, Garver

1B-Cron, Austin

2B-Schoop/Polanco, Torreyes

SSPolanco/Schoop, Torreyes

3B-Gonzalez/Moustakas, Sano, Torreyes

LF-Rosario, Reed

CF-Buxton, Cave

RF-Kepler, Reed

DH-Sano

So 25 man roster would be...

Pitchers-12- Gibson, Berrios, Pineda, Odorizzi, Meija, Duffy, Hildenberger, Rogers, Reed, Moya, May, TBD

Positions-13- Gonzalez/Moustakas, Rosario, Kepler, Buxton, Sano, Polanco, Schoop, Cron, Austin, Castro, Garver, Torreyes, Cave/Reed

Not great, but we're playing the kids with no high hopes here, so see what happens. Good managing and comradery could lead to a solid season with possible results. Sorry if this is a bit wonky, first post here...
