Two spaces after a period

clutterheart

Recommended Posts

- Using Chrome

When I post a comment from my computer, if I use more than 1 sentence, I hit the space bar twice after the period.

It looks correct when I edit my comment.  But when its posted, the spaces after my period goes away and it looks like a typing error.  If I hit the edit button to fix it, both spaces are there.  But then hit submit and It looks like this:

Gol darn it, no Yu Darvish.I wish he didn't waste my whole offseason. What a jerk.

All other spaces are there, it only shows up after a period.  I make my fair share of typos and I am not stickler for grammar/punctuation.  But for some reason this really bothers me.  I see a few other comments have the same issue as me. So it can't be just me, can it?

Proper people use two spaces after the period, Brock.

It's always been an issue for me (using chrome).

But now I've figured out a fix.

Just hit return, instead of the space bar.

Look at those rivers of white space!

You can't possibly have reached age 40 yet! ;)

Lol.  One more year.  Thanks for the link.

It's kind of funny ... the over 40 thing ... because I've had trouble adapting to the one space rule, but the link does explain why, and Brock has been adamant about this with me when I first brought it up to him. Ah, those college years of TYPING papers, not only my own, but others' as well, for the cash. (I was a very good typist ... fast, accurate, and provided spell and grammar check as well.)

But I discovered something in the process ... old dogs CAN learn new tricks! ;)

It was really hard to join the modern world and become a 'one spacer' but it is possible. The reason of course was one of the last times that this issue came up on the forum.

However it isn't an optional habit. It is exactly what the word habit means. It is automatic and if your job still requires two spaces then you better stick with two spaces.

The 40 countdown has already started here...

FTR, many institutions still require two spaces after the period, including the court I work for.[ ][ ]So it's a habit I won't be breaking anytime soon.

Right I spend most of days in contracts and it can rejected w/o 2 spaces.

BUT the point of this post is when I type 2 spaces it reverts to 0 spaces.  I wouldn't care if it reverts to 1 space, but the 0 spaces is what bothers me.

Learn to type 3 spaces.   It becomes 1.   It took some time to learn this habit.   But now I can't type without it.   Just my little way of sticking it to the Man.

Learning to type 3 is really no different than learning to type 1. But there was a reason for it not reverting or not reading two, just don’t remember what that was

I'm pretty sure the reason is that the implementer believes 2 Spaces Are Wrong And Must Be Punished.

I'm over 50, and love the one space change! Now we have to get rid of the delta between good and well (hahahaha, never), and other silly AmericanEnglish rules! There are so many silly rules, when you think about it.....which as someone that is trying to become an author, really starts to hit you in editing.

Well and good and your, you're drive me batty! But, when you think about it, there is no good reason for well and good to be different words....

also "of" instead of "have"...that one might bother me the most right now. Seriously, I think some people thiink of is correct....

Then, than

The one that stymies me the most is further, farther.

Chrome and TD forced me to change and I thought it would be difficult for me. It really wasn't, I'm capable of evolution!

Okay, first, this is a bug I have never been able to fix. The RTE on this site is buggy as **** and it's so embedded into everything that I have no hope of removing it and replacing it with something more adjustable.

Second, ONE SPACE IS CORRECT. This is not up for dispute. Just because your stupid government job, academia job, or law degree told you two spaces is correct (which is actually correct in the legal profession, as they use monospace fonts), doesn't make it so. Find me one ****ing respectable digital publication that uses two spaces and I'll eat my hat.

The typewriter age is dead, folks. I managed to learn how to type with a single space after a period once proportional fonts were introduced, so can you.

But I guess the desktop publishing and computing age is only 25 years old. I totally get why you haven't had time to adjust.

Do these same respectable outfits sanction the use of all caps for emphasis?   ;)

Grammar Girl agrees with Brock:

As do the Chicago, AP, and US Government Printing Office style manuals.

A Law Professor freaks out about it.

And I just want my Oxford comma. And maybe a hula hoop.
