Let the speculation begin... or become enhanced.

Baseball America's Ben Badler learned that the Twins have voided their $3 million deal with Dominican SS Jelfrey Marte for something that came out during a recent physical. According to the article, it is believed to be something related to his vision.

UPDATED - Per JJ Cooper, this does not give the Twins an extra $3 million. They have $3.2 million to spend internationally still.

Please note... I have updated the original post after JJ Cooper tweeted that this does not give the Twins an extra $3 million.

Likely, this decision on Marte was made a few weeks ago and that's why the Twins go to $3.2 million available... Otherwise, they would have been at $0.2 million.

But there were reports before Marte's release came out that the Twins had something like 3m+ (along with Yankees and I think the Rangers).

It seems odd that no one here has implicitly stated the obvious conspiracy theory involving the Twins and international bonus money.

Just so we're clear, we have silently decided as a group not to not speak out loud the name of everyone's most hopeful holiday wish baseball player?

I linked to two articles about him ...

What could this possibly have to do with Yu Darvish :)

There's definitely some confusion here. I'll trust JJ Cooper and Ben Badler, but obviously MLBTR usually is pretty accurate too.

I looked it up. The Twins went into the International signing period with $5.25 million to spend. I don't have a full listing of who all they have signed. I know there were two other big name guys besides Marte that they signed.

$5.25 million + the $0.5 million from the Nationals (Kintzler trade) = $5.75 million total.

JJ Cooper clarifies:

To try to clear up any confusion. The AP reported last week the Twins had $3.2 million to spend internationally. The Marte voided deal was $3 million of that $3.2 million they have available, but the Marte voiding wasn't known publicly til @BenBadler reported it today.

My guess is the other 4 players used up the other 2+ mill in money. If Urdaneta and Andijar signed for anything over $300k that would likely use up the money.

Jelfry Marte, ss, Dominican Republic (No. 13 prospect), $3 million.
Carlos Aguiar, of, Venezuela (No. 30 prospect) $1,000,000
Luis Baez, of, Dominican Republic, $300,000.
Nomar Urdaneta, ss, Venezuela  ??$
Jose Andujar, of, Dominican Republic ??$

This is the signing list from Baseball America:

Minnesota Twins
Jelfry Marte, ss, Dominican Republic (No. 13 prospect), $3 million.
Carlos Aguiar, of, Venezuela (No. 30 prospect), ($1 million per Berardino)
Luis Baez, of, Dominican Republic, $300,000.
Nomar Urdaneta, ss, Venezuela
Jose Andujar, of, Dominican Republic

5.75 - 4.3 = 1.45.

For this to make sense Urdaneta and Andujar had to sign for a total of 1.25 million. Which for some reason I don't believe, but have nothing to back that up.

I'm pretty sure they signed more than just these five players. I would bet another 10-12 players, at least, and most of them for over the $10K that goes into the math.

Here's what I don't understand.... If the Twins have been widely reported to have around $3M that could be used to sign Otani, and we all know the Twins started with $5.25M and added $500k, as well as the widely reported $3M signing bonus to Marte, how did nobody do the math and ask how $3M bonus money left was possible?

That's a great question... one I've asked myself several times this morning already.

It's an unwritten rule, no math on Twins Daily!!  ;)
