LaMonte Wade Injured in AFL

Seth Stohs

Tonight in Arizona, Twins outfield prospect Lamonte Wade was injured in a scary collision in the outfield. Here is the video:

There are reports that he was able to move arms and legs and gave a thumbs up to the crowd. He was taken off in a stretcher and taken to the hospital.

Recent updates are concerns of head and neck.

Hopefully nothing major, but definitely scary...

Best wishes to LaMonte!!

Yeah.  Saw that a while ago.

That was scary.  Hope he is ok.  Seemed to more all digits ok.

(But he had no business being where he was in that play, to play devil's advocate.)

And my first thought was "nice tackle"...   'tis the time of the year

I hope that this is nothing serious. I wonder if either player called for the ball.

The ball was a rocket hit to the intersection of both players' range. I don't think either player could confidently call the other off. If the ball's within your range, you go for it until called off. Both going full speed... just one of those things. Horrifying to watch develop, sickening to see the aftermath. Hoping for the best.

These photos are of the aftermath of the outfield collision (hm, warning: don't scroll down if you are highly empathetic and easily upset).

The first is mine, the others are from ashburydavid, whose photos are always better than mine. Here are his accompanying comments:

Observations: Kevin Padlo is the player [at left in the second and third picture] looking most upset. Ryan Eades somewhat later snuck into the outfield scrum around Wade (not shown in these three photos), where Chris Paul already was. (also not shown) As Wade's gurney exited the field, it passed by the home bullpen; Sean Miller and the other bullpen guys were in line to wish Wade well.

Cardinals outfielder Oscar Mercado, who was playing centerfield, is the downed player on the right. He got up under his own power after a few precautionary minutes, and remained in the game. Amazingly, he held onto the catch for the third out of the inning.

Mike Berardino posted late last night that he heard from Wade's agent that it was a concussion. Here is his article, which includes a picture.

This morning, milb.com posted that he has been released from the hospital.

Still remembering the promising speedster Jason Kubel having a fall ball injury that killed off his base-running skills, as well as outfield speed.

That was my first thought, too. I'm not sure Kubel was ever a speedster, but the injury made him a slow-poke and his range a liability in the OF.

Watching this live in my kitchen, I went to a knee with an audible gasp that got every child in the house looking at the TV in the living room when they were previously half paying attention as they played with Legos. It was horrific live to see the play.

Yeah, even the above photos don't fully get across the mood in the ballpark because of the length of time involved. We know the medical procedure in such cases is very conservative, but it's not easy sitting through 15 minutes of two guys told to lie motionless and then one wheeled out. Your mind sifts through lots of scenarios.

I dropped a note to a Braves player, and he told me that Riley was crushed. Sounds like he and Wade chatted before Wade left Arizona, though, which is probably good for Riley's psyche heading into an offseason.
