Keeping the Band Together

Here's a look at one possible 6 year scenario where the core young guns (Buxton, Sano, Rosario, Berrios, Polanco) are extended (had to save a few dollars somewhere so hoping Kepler would take an Arb Year buyout) as well as keeping the old foagies (Dozier, Mauer) around for a few more seasons

Includes Free Agent signings of Kintzler and Chatwood for 3 years and a little Dead Pool Money in case anyone gets traded and salary needs to be eaten

2018 Extension Total Dollars Committed:  $315M

2018 Free Agent Dollars Committed:         $54M

2019 Extension Total Dollars Committed:  $107.5M

2019 Joe Mauer 3 year (please get to 3000 hits contract:  $30M

Think of the manilla colored cells as just placeholders for the positions in the future (other than the extension folks) and it gives an idea how expensive the team will get (a little more than cost of living increases)

All of this and maybe even a little more should be quite doable when you consider the added attendance and merchandise sold from 7 straight trips to the playoffs (counting 2017) 4 American League Championships and 2 World Series Titles

Here's the chart...fire away in the comments :)

Interesting table.

So the Twins are potentially going to give Joe Mauer a three year 30 million deal in 2019 after his age 34 season after all the health troubles he's had the last few years?  Chuckles.  Can't wait to see the reaction to that.  And Dozier a five year 82 million dollar deal at age 30?  Not sure i agree with that unless Nick Gordon is traded.

Good work on this. I don't agree with this entirely but it was well done. My desire to win has pretty much completely overshadowed my long history of sentimentality so I have no interest in keeping Mauer on the books or having a Kintzler reunion or Dozier into his late 30's.

I like the idea of keeping the young guys together, but I wouldn't blink if Kepler was to be moved in exchange for young pitching.

That "might" be a bit high...but I do think they will try to resign him, whether we like it or not

Dozier's extension is direct from Seth's original dive into the offseason which kind of inspired the spreadsheet madness

In reading the comments to Buxton and Sano I upped the numbers from those posts

Biggest question is do you think the 1st National Bank of Pohladsville will allow the Payroll to grow this much in the next 6 years? Names and numbers would obviously move and change for each slot

2017: • 108M

2018: • 120M • 16%

2019: • 127M • 5.8%

2020: • 130M • 2.4%

2021: • 144M • 10.7%

2022: • 158M • 9.7%

2023: • 159M • 0.6%

I think the Twins will be smart enoough to keep Mauer

And I'd definitely consider Kepler part of the core, much moreso than Polanco.

Do you think $30/3 is too much? Too little??

Good point on Kepler over Polanco

Polanco has 2 pre-Arb years so Twins could keep him under $600K both years

Someone will choose not to sign an extension into FA years I just picked Kepler in this scenario...could be Polanco with Gordon or Javier taking over for Minimum Wage

I think a 3/30 is a good offer.  He was worth 18M this year, and we'd hope he could have similar seasons for the next three (and I think he can).
