Aaron Slegers to Make Major League Debut Tomorrow

Good, I'm glad the team will at least get a MLB eval on him prior to the off season.

Most people don't think his stuff is good enough for the MLB level, but it might play up in the bullpen someday. Now that he's on the 40-man, he'll likely head there at least in September assuming Santiago or Mejia are able to return.

Interesting.

We have a doubleheader coming up on Monday too.

This pushes back Ervin to at least Saturday, and they might want to save either him or Colon for Monday so they don't need two rookies starting Monday.

LEN III wrote in the Strib that Santana will pitch Friday, Berrios will be pushed to Saturday and Colon will pitch on Sunday. I think the manager wanted to keep Santana on his regular rest and give Berrios an extra day.

As for Monday, well, looks like it could be Gee and Enns, but who knows what else may happen before then. LEN III also mentioned that Gonsalves would be available on Monday with an extra day of rest, keeping in mind the 26-man roster would be in force for game 2 that day.

He has to be added to the 40-man. Is a corresponding move required? I count only 38 currently on the MLB Reserve List (with 4 additional 60-day DL denizens) which surprises me, but if so they can just add him. I thought the roster was full.

For doubleheaders scheduled more than 1 day in advance like Monday's, the 26th man is for both games. So it could be an extra reliever then too.

Yep, the 40 man roster will now be at 39 player with Slegers' addition. There's been some confusion over some of the past 40 man moves but I'm quite confident they're at 39 now.

I'd glad to see Slegers finally get his chance. Similarly to Enns, I don't think he has the stuff to be a MLB starter, so the bullpen could be his actual home. At least he's getting a chance after a solid year in AAA and watching a bunch of veterans get promoted ahead of him.

Not to be Debbie Downer, but I hope the bullpen is an smooth running, well oiled machine today, because it might be needed here and there....

Just 1 game in the last 3 days, so they should be at full strength. I'm hoping Slegers can pitch deep into the game, but with Molitor, he might get pulled after giving up 2 hits in the 3rd.

It looks like Enns won't be pitching during the double header.  I'm assuming Slegers gets sent back down after the game today and they call up another AAA pitcher.  Maybe a Gonsalves promotion?

Slegers is the 26th man, so he has to go back to AAA I believe.  Though, I suppose they could send someone else down or to the DL and put him on the 25 man roster.

Shoulder strain, eh? It's not possible that it's one of those phantom injuries, now, is it?

Since he has options it would work better to just send him down to AAA, so gotta think the arm is at least bothering him some.

Slegers has Minnesota connections FWIW. His mom is a Minnesota native. I met her at the Macy's Thanksgiving parade in NYC in 2015. Congratulations to the tall young man.

That was a pretty random meeting! Did you have a Twins hat on or something and she commented?

Here's what I'll be watching for. In my copious amount of direct observation (basically one spring game on the back fields in Ft Myers), when he's going good the batters just can't get a read on him for some reason. Hesitant checked swings that come in for called strikes, for instance. I have my doubts that major leaguers will be similarly fooled by his motion or whatever, but if the first few batters show hesitation then I will be very encouraged. At least, until the second or third time through the lineup. :) Like you say, this type of profile sounds like a reliever when I write it up like that, but he's had success so let's see what he can do as a starter. Maybe he'll turn out to be the greatest non-tipper-of-pitches in history.

He's my Adopt-a-Prospect guy, so you would think I'd have been lobbying for him to get called up sooner, but I think it's fine. It's not like he's been buried at AAA for years, it's his first. And even though he's 24, most college guys need time in the pros just like high schoolers do. Terry Ryan used to preach consistency, both to demonstrate it but also to acquire it, and Ryan knows a thing or two about prospects. You don't acquire consistency except by repetition, and each level is different. So I think the time is right, but it's not greatly overdue.
