The Twins first minor league player of the week:

 

Single-A Cedar Rapids infielder Travis Blankenhorn is the Twins minor league player of the week...Blankenhorn played in seven games for the Kernels, hitting .379 (11-for-29) with two doubles, three home runs, eight RBI and five runs scored...the 20-year-old was drafted by the Twins in the third round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of Pottsville (PA) High School.

Pitcher Jason Wheeler has been named the Batavia Downs Gaming and Hotel Player of the Week for April 18-23.

 

Wheeler struck out a career-high 11 batters on April 21, picking up the win as the Wings beat Charlotte 3-2. Wheeler allowed five hits and two runs in 7.0 innings pitched.

 

More on Wheeler:

Selected by the Minnesota Twins in the eighth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Loyola Marymount......Went unbeaten in 11 starts from May 7-July 1, 2016 for the Wings and named the IL's starting pitcher in the Triple-A All-Star Game, July 13 in Charlotte.

Jermaine Palacios named Midwest League Player of the Week

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Midwest League and MiLB.com announced today that Kernels shortstop Jermaine Palacios has been named the Midwest League Player of the Week for the period ending April 23rd.

Palacios hit .516 (16-31) with three doubles, a triple, a home run and seven RBI in seven games last week for the Kernels. He also had a .559 slugging percentage and drew three walks. He was signed by the Twins as an international free agent in 2013 and is a native of Barquisimeto, Venezuela.

Berrios Named International League Pitcher of the Week
The right-hander honored for the second time in 2017

ROCHESTER, NY – Rochester Red Wings right-hander Jose Berrios has been named the International League Pitcher of the Week for the second time in four weeks, the league office announced Monday.

Berrios went 1-0 two starts during the period, leading the league with 14 innings and tied for the league-high with 17 strikeouts. He allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and five walks while holding opponents to a .128 batting average.

In his first start of the week on Tuesday vs. Gwinnett, Berrios fanned 10 batters over six innings while surrendering two runs on four hits, including a home run, and three walks. On Sunday vs. Louisville, he earned the win after tossing eight scoreless frames on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Berrios retired 13 in a row at one point Sunday.

Berrios is 2-0 with a 1.09 ERA in five starts this season with 18 hits, seven runs, four earned, two home runs and eight walks with 35 strikeouts in 33.0 innings. He leads the league in innings pitched, is second in average against (.157), tied for second in strikeouts and third in ERA and WHIP (0.79).

This is the third IL Pitcher of the Week award for Berrios, who also earned the honor for the weeks ending April 9, 2017 and July 3, 2016. A Rochester pitcher has earned a weekly award a league-high 10 times since the beginning of 2015.

I missed the Twins award last week... 

 

Single-A Ft. Myers pitcher Lachlan Wells is the Twins minor league player of the week...Wells made one start for the Miracle, pitching 7.0 shutout innings against the Florida Fire Frogs on Monday, with no walks, three hits allowed and eight strikeouts...the left-handed pitcher has made three appearances (2 starts) for the Miracle this season, going 1-1, 0.64 ERA (14.0 IP, 1 ER) with one walk and 17 strikeouts...the Newcastle, Australia native was signed by the Twins as an undrafted free agent in August of 2014.

Single-A Cedar Rapids outfielder Lewin Diaz is the Twins minor league Player of the Week...in five games for the Kernels, he hit .474 (9-for-19) with four doubles, two home runs, eight RBI, one walk and four runs scored...Diaz has played in 27 games for the Kernels this season, hitting .282 (29-for-103) with 11 doubles, three home runs and 17 RBI...the 20-year-old was signed by the Twins as an undrafted free agent in July of 2013...previous winners of this award this season have been (in order): infielder Travis Blankenhorn, pitcher Lachlan Wells, and infielder Jermaine Palacios.

Rookie-Level Elizabethton outfielder Trey Cabbage has been named Twins minor league Player of the Week... in seven games, Cabbage hit .333 (9-for-27) with two doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, eight walks and a .486 on-base percentage
