According to the Twins official website, five players were outrighted from the Twins 40-man roster. 

 

Andrew Albers

James Beresford

Pat Dean 

Tommy Milone 

Logan Schafer

 

 

All five can become free agents following the World Series. 

 

No real surprises on the list. Milone wasn't going to be tended an arbitration offer. 

Dean was the only one that caused some pause for me.

After keeping him up with the big club all of September, do you expect they will resign him this off season?  With true intentions of making the squad as a 4th outfielder?

They'll likely all become free agents and see what's out there. They'll bring a couple of them back. I would say Schafer and Milone are least likely of the five to return.

They do not have to add any before April.  Perkins might actually remain there (and the Twins will collect insurance $)

Correct. The three will have to count on the 40 before the Rule 5 draft. So, expect there will be more players removed from the 40 man. Suzuki becomes a F/A following the WS. Arbitration decisions will be made. And then they'll have to add a few 40-man guys. Lots to do yet, but the rest will require more input from Falvey. The decisions get a bunch more difficult.

All 60-day guys come back to the 40-man in the offseason. Have to wait until spring training ends to put them back on.

 

Why surprised to see Pat Dean? I think many of us on this board were surprised that they did add Dean to the last 40-man (and allowed Zach Jones to Rule 5). Of course, any of the guys will be able to seek work elsewhere and command a higher minor league salary somewhere. The Twins could also bring any of them back (including Beresford especially) to be minor league depth at Rochester. 

 

But looking at Schafer's earlier addition, as well as Beresford (which was a nice gesture) makes you wonder WHY they also didn't take a chance to look at Adam Walker in September. Walker steadily did his job, advancing each season in the minors. He was already on the 40-man. And now he will be competing for the Twins with basically the same skill set as Daniel Palka. You can never have too many of the same player these days (i.e. Park, Vargas and add in the Sano/Plouffe/Mauer mess). 

 

And I would've argued the continued use of Albers and Dean with their wonderful 2016 showings and not getting a view of Mr. Wheeler, the ace at Rochester. But the Twins probably won't 40-man Mr. Wheeler anyways. So, we move on. But maybe the Twins could've/should've looked some more at players THEY MIGHT be adding to the 40-man (glad they did get a look at Wimmers, who might not stay and might stay safe, although he could walk as a minor league free agent...as well as Pat Light, kinda in the same boat. Both given an opportunity to show their stuff. Still some outside promise - much more than, say, Dean or Albers or even Boshers -- but they have to be on the roster cut bubble).

 

Suzuki is gone, so three spots. The Twins need at least five more. At least.

If in 2017 we wind up regretting losing Patrick Michael Dean, the coming off-season can be deemed a failure.

 

I've got a hand-written roster sheet in a notebook... Dean was among 8 players who fit into roster spots 37-44 (after making decisions on Arbitration guys and adding necessary 40-man roster types). Very borderline.

I think Ash was saying that if our rotation is so bad that we actually miss Pat Dean, our offseason can be deemed a failure.

Boshers for sure.   For many people Plouffe, Centeno, then Walker (which would inspire a limited run update thread like Arcia or Benson) would not cause much pause

O'Rourke and Wimmers have few fans. Tonkin and Santiago leaving would delight a couple of people.

Would like to see Wimmers get a chance in the long role.  Losing Tonkin would not bother me, he is poster boy for Neil Allen's comments about fastball command.  Boshers would not be a big loss, expect Plouffe to be non tendered if not traded.  Do not expect Wheeler to be added.  Next group will need Falvey's input, not much time left. Still probably need 4 more spots to start.

Very Limited :)

Major difference between potential power (Arcia and Benson) and every year proven power (35 HR & 120 RBI / Per 162 game average in minors).  I want to see what those failed averages might look like in an MLB cup of coffee.

Correct.

 

Seth's "37-44" observation is the other side of my view. Other teams face exactly the same roster pressures. One of Terry Ryan's core competencies was finding such guys on the cheap, and signing them to AAA contracts for us; these kinds of guys are always available on the open market, and I presume our new brain trust will be able to do the same, so assigning one of our own to the 40-man for the off-season needs to be done with a real purpose in mind.

 

And I don't see that purpose for Pat Dean. He has developed to his full potential, having had the misfortune of experiencing his (likely) Career Year in AAA. He represents AAAA filler for a bad team with no role I can think of on a good team, as he doesn't seem to be especially deadly against lefties - I suppose you could invest time trying to turn him into a max-effort LOOGY, or you could move on. I'd rather protect a prospect with a higher ceiling who carries some small risk of being snatched away via Rule-5, if it comes down to that.
