First Wave of September Call Ups

Seth Stohs

Recommended Posts

Though the Twins will not confirm any promotions until Tuesday (probably because they can't call anyone up before September 1), Kevin Oklobzija indicates that the Twins will call up five players initially.

They are:

Eric Fryer - Non-Roster-

Danny Santana

AJ Achter

Michael Tonkin

Kennys Vargas

Again, they will likely call up more when the minor league season is complete. However, they've added power for the bench, speed for the bench, another catcher, and two bullpen arms.

The end of the minor league season should have zero to do with this IMO. When you have guys like Berrios and Kepler who instantly make your team better (while they are in the playoff race) I think they should be called up ASAP as well.

Berrios threw six innings tonight and 90-ish pitches. I don't think he's getting the call for at least a few days, if this season at all.

its stupid. They could call him up and rest him, get him used to the big league club.

He earned it.

its stupid. They could call him up and rest him, now if he comes up in a week and dominates in the pen or anywhere (or if a starter goes down) he can't be brought up for the playoff roster if the Twins make it, is that correct?

If so they completely dropped the ball on this one.

Not correct. If they decide to call him up, they can maneuver to have him on a postseason roster.

I ended up reading that in the thread right now, earlier today I thought that was the case but someone told me

He had to be up by sept 1, good to know. Guys like Kepler should be up now IMO. Tomorrows game is just as important as ones two weeks from now. Can't get enough legit bench bats currently IMO

While I agree it's "all hands on deck", I'm not convinced Kepler is a good candidate for a September call-up. The Twins remain unconvinced he's ready for MLB pitching and I can't really argue with that... They see the guy every day and this has been his "breakout" season.

I'd rather see Arcia if you told me "We need a guy who can get on base in the eighth inning of a September 15th game". Kepler is a complete unknown at this point and without first hand experience watching the guy, I'll defer to the Twins' evaluation team whether he's ready for an MLB cup of coffee.

But I still don't really get the Berrios thing. If the Twins shut him down for the season after one more start, I'll understand it a bit more but I will never understand why he wasn't up here in mid-August to make that (badly needed) spot start that led to the disastrous Yankees series.

Arcia should be up as well IMO, or at least one of Arcia or Kepler. With hicks on the DL the Twins current bench is pathetic, they needed to call up more than one bat IMO, Vargas is solid, but who is the PH with a LOOGY on the mound? Nunez? Yuck.

Kepler is mashing AA, no? Give him a shot at least, if he goes 0-8 against MLB pitching with 6k, then you deal with it. He is still a better Ph option then Herrmann, who the Twins apparently felt comfortable using as a PH the other day. Vargas shouldn't be the only "real" PH option tomorrow.

I agree... But as I pointed out earlier, the choice shouldn't be "Kepler" or "Herrmann". There are other options.

Hell, I'd rather call up Pinto when you get right down to it. Like Arcia, he has a proven track record of "not sucking at hitting a baseball".

Agreed.

As of tomorrow the PH options are in order:

Vargas

Robinson?

Nunez?

Santana?

fryer?

Hermann?

No reason for that garbage of a hitting bench after sept 1st, with this AA/AAA talent and a team that has a couple holes in the lineup on a nightly basis!

Kepler immediately makes the team better...or worse. Of course, you don't know until you try it. I trust the Twins scouts. I know not everybody does.

What's the roster situation in calling up Fryer. Does he have to be put back on the 40 man?

Fryer was off the 40-man and will have to be added on. Since Logan Darnell has had a fine finishing kick in Rochester, it almost has to be Wheeler taken off the roster (maybe Thompson).

Agreed. It's comical that two ****s should be given about that!

It's not about the scouts, it's Terry Ryan falling back on his conservative nature.

Kepler doesn't make the team worse btw. He has to be added to the 40 man anyways next year, losing Aaron Thompson now or then is irrelevant.

And Ryan leaving Berrios down in Rochester for another start next week is now just reason 50 on why he should be fired regardless at the end of this season. This current team is winning in spite of his constant conservative after conservative mistake.

I'd LOVE to hear him give an explanation how Berrios isn't one of the best 15! Pitchers that can help the Minnesota Twins win now, in the rotation or in the pen.

Kepler is ALREADY on the 40-man roster.

Wow that is right! I forgot that. Even more of a no brained. Dude is the best twins hitter in the minors this year (non sano division) what else does he need to do to earn a shot? I mean, the Twins did use Hermann as a PH 2 games ago!

My question is: what else do Kepler and Berrios have to possibly do to earn a spot on this expanded roster? If someone can answer that, I will give this beef a rest.

They have to project better NOW, than they will be one year after they are eligible for arbitration and then Free Agency. Otherwise, ANOTHER team will own them at the PEAK of their CAREER!!!

is this sarcasm? They can call them up now and still "keep them down" enough to save that extra year if need be.
