2015 Minor League Transactions

Recommended Posts

I should have started this a week ago, and I'm sure I'll miss a few.

Earlier this week, the Twins called up Caleb Thielbar and Ryan O'Rourke was moved from Chattanooga to Rochester.

Nate Hanson has been taken off the Disabled List and played on Saturday for Rochester.

John Curtiss has been placed on the Cedar Rapids Kernels' Disabled List with a concussion.

Miles Nordgren has been promoted from Extended Spring Training.

Twins sold Dan Rohlfing to the Mets. Means he came off DL and there was no place for him, perhaps> Twins still have ALlen De San Miguel sitting around on the DL. Always thought Dan was the second-coming of Chris Herrmann if you wanted someone younger. Been with the organization waaaay too many years, though only 26.27. See Marr Koch signed on with the Angels High A!

Rohlfing is excited about this new opportunity. The Mets lost two MLB catchers, so they need some. The Twins have Fryer and Pinto at AAA and De San Miguel is also on the DL there, I believe. He's likely as hurt as Rohlfing was.

He does have some good versatlity, very athletic. A very good guy.

Any impact of this trade on when Pinto will be called up?

Since Kohl Stewart was placed on the Ft. Myers Disabled List last week, there have been several corresponding moves. At the time they were just planning on having him miss one start and not make a corresponding move. They then played a 10-inning game, a 17-inning game and an 11-inning game in a row, so they needed arms.

First, Lefty Jose Velez joined the team in St. Lucie, from Extended Spring Training.

The next day, he went back to EST and RHP Dereck Rodriguez and RHP Alexis Tapia were added to the Miracle roster. In addition, Brett Lee was removed from the Disabled List and started on Sunday.

To make room, Jose Velez, Tim Shibuya and Todd Van Steensel were sent to EST. Now, that may not make a lot of sense, but it does. Velez threw two innings on Saturday. Shibuya threw three innings in the 17-inning game and wasn't able to pitch for a couple of days. Van Steensel threw 2.1 innings in the 11 inning game and wasn't able to pitch on Sunday.

Obviously EST is just across the parking lot from the Miracle stadium, so logistics are simple.

Now this morning, Shibuya was added back to the Ft. Myers roster and Rodriguez went back to EST. Rodriguez threw two scoreless innings on Sunday. Van Steensel must not be able to pitch on Monday as he was not yet added back, and Alexis Tapia is still with the Miracle in case he is needed.

Uffdah... minor league transactions are fun!

At some point, will the Florida State League go to a 50 man active roster, and thereby cut out all the shenanigans, needed as they seem to be?

Agree, Seth. He did exactly what you hope to see a guy who is assigned to the same level he finished the prior year at do - spend a month being flat out better than everyone else and move on up.

Gonsalves is doing the same thing.

I noticed Rainis Silva started for the Kernels last night, presumable replacing the injured Navarreto (who has really struggled).  Silva was in the GCL last year but he played well there and it's possible he'll be skipping Elizabethton all together.

Alexis Tapia has also made a similar jump, he pitched for Fort Myers last night (and once at the end of April also).

Not sure if this is the Twins being aggressive with these guys or just getting them some game action while other players are injured.  Both have performed well in the DSL and GCL.

I've missed a few here... let's see, and feel free to add to this:

Eddie Rosario, Michael Tonkin and Ryan Pressly to the Twins.

Tim Shibuya and Madison Boer to the Lookouts.

Ft. Myers played a few more extra innings games, so they've done the EST to Ft. Myers thing again. Van Steensel and Peterson to EST for a day or two with Jose Velez and Alexis Tapia coming to the Miracle.

Navarreto to the DL with Rainis Silva replacing him.

Any others I'm missing?

  • 2 weeks later...

There haven't been a lot of transactions this year. I'm not sure if I've missed some or not.

Today, the Twins sent Kennys Vargas down to Rochester (to make room for Eduardo Nunez).

Also, Sam Clay and CK Irby were sent back to Extended Spring Training from Cedar Rapids. In their place, Yorman Landa was moved up along with RHP Keaton Steele.

A few known transactions so far:

Tyler Duffey promoted from Chattanooga to Rochester.

Mat Batts promoted from Cedar Rapids to Ft. Myers

Luke Bard activated and sent to Cedar Rapids.

Jose Velez sent up to Cedar Rapids from EST (he has pitched in FT. Myers at times).

Yorman Landa placed on the DL (not good, I'm guessing).

Looks like David Hurlbut is being promoted from Ft. Myers to Chattanooga, presumably to take Duffy's spot in the rotation.  Also, Dalton Hicks finally went on the DL and Jario Rodriguez has joined the Lookouts.

I assume that Duffy will join the Rochester rotation, but if so, who is he likely going to replace?

Also, I have been wondering about Jason Adam, the pitcher that the Twins received from Kansas City for Josh Willingham last year.  I remember seeing that he was injured at the end of spring training, and since he is not listed on any roster I assume that he is rehabbing in extended spring training.  Any word on what the nature of his injury is and how long he may be out?

I get the promotions via the Twins usual way of doing business.  Batts has seniority on Gonsalves and turns 24 in 1.5 months, Hurlbut is 24.5, that plus his 2 appearances trumps Hu.  Duffey has seniority and was next in line to go up to AAA.  But it certainly belies past supposed importance about sticking around for the first half ASG in their leagues., or the promised pretense of performance-based promotions.

And once again, clearly the best major league prospects, Gonsalves, Hu and Berrios have to wait their turns. Disappointing news, hopefully for just the very short-term.

Hurlbut was an All Star last year in the Florida State League, then he went almost a year without pitching. He made 2-3 appearances with the MIracle before moving up to AA, which is where he would have been if he hadn't been hurt. Consider his Miracle time rehab.

Batts numbers are also terrific, and he was (like Gonsalves) in Cedar Rapids last year. His age means he moves up. And, frankly, if he hadn't been moved up, people would be complaining about the numbers he was putting up in Cedar Rapids because he's old for the level. So, no matter what, someone would have complained.

I agree with both of these moves, as well as the Duffey promotion. Duffey probably should have started in AAA.

Berrios, Hu and Gonsalves are the prospects,so they're going to do whatever they believe is best for them.

I would not put Hu in that company, he is in the Tyler Duffey prospect category...
