Chris Parmelee signs with the Orioles

Former Minnesota Twin OF/1B Chris Parmelee has signed a minor league deal with the Orioles.

I had a feeling this was going to happen. There were a couple threads where there was speculation that Parmelee would sign with the Blue Jays and the Orioles, and it's happened.

I'm betting on Parmelee winning a spot on the bench and hitting well as a pinch hitter. The Orioles know how to get former Twins to work better than the Twins do....

I think this is probably one of the better situations for Parmelee to find himself. There's still a bit of a question mark about Chris Davis (he might DH anyway). Steve Pearce was great last year, but was it a mirage?

Plus, the O's lost 2 pretty good bats from their outfield, it could be a good fit for Parmelee to work in a platoon of sorts, even though he has a reverse split (hitting lefties better recently).

Parmelee always seemed like he was just about to "put it all together" then something would happen. He'd slump - get benched out of the blue or was optioned down to the minors because of a thin rotation / infield - etc. etc. etc.

He's had flashes of brilliance - here's hoping he can put it all together in Baltimore.

Yeah, but almost everyone gets picked up by either the Jays or the Orioles, so no money is paid out on this bet.

I thought Parm had a good chance with the Twins, but he didn't string enough good games together to stay on the field.  I hope he has success with the O's.  More success than Alexei Casilla, anyway.  Maybe he'll follow Valencia and Hendricks and someone can hit the Orioles/Royals/Jays trifecta.  Still not a lot of money there.

October 22, 2015:

(AP) Twins fans across the land lament their team as the Baltimore Orioles clinch a World Series appearance tonight.  Pinch-hitter Chris Parmelee came through in the bottom of the 10th inning with a runner on base in a dramatic come-from-behind victory.  Fellow former Twin J.J. Hardy snagged a tremendous defensive play in the top of the 10th to hold the Tigers to one run, and then he led off the inning with a single into left field.  After being moved over by the next two batters, Parmelee stepped to the plate to pinch-hit for a struggling Jonathan Schoop and sent the ball beyond the right field bleachers off of Tigers reliever Tom Gorzelanny, who had not allowed a home run to a lefty the entire year before Parmelee.

The Orioles will likely start midseason acquisition Francisco Liriano in game 1 of the World Series against Jon Lester of the Cubs.

You forgot Delmon's homer to tie it up in the bottom of the 9th,

Any insight as to why the Orioles pick up so many ex-Twins? Could be a good question for another TR interview.  Part of me wonders if they still have strong ties in Rochester, as the Red Wings were their affiliate for 41 years before switching to the Twins.  (Doesn't quite explain MLBers like Hardy and Delmon, although most of their former Twin pick-ups are of the AAA variety.)

IMHO, Parmelee never got a fair shot with the Twins.  Too many 1B / DH types.

He got a lot of opportunities, my problem was that they were pretty sporadic.  I always wanted to see him get a chance to start consistantly for a few months at least.  It always seemed like when he'd slump, which to be fair was often, he wouldn't get much leash.  Of course when you're cold, then told to ride pine, you're probably never going to get hot.  The team was losing, 4 years in a row, not sure why they wouldn't let some of these guys take their lumps every day just to see what would come from it.

I suppose it perhaps had something to do with Gardenhire managing for his job the last four years.  That's not always a good forumla for developing younger players.
