[TD=colspan: 6]Scouting Report:

Felix has an easy, repeatable delivery coupled with improved command of the strike zone. He has the ability to set up hitters and execute his pitches. Felix's curveball is a plus pitch, with some slide to it. His change up is an average pitch, but he has a good feel for it. His fastball has kept gaining speed over the years, going from around 88 MPH when he was 16, to low 90's in Rookie ball, to approaching mid 90's now. There is still some projection in his frame, so he could consistently start hitting mid 90's as he matures. This is where scouts get split: Scouts who see his fastball staying in the low 90's tend to project him to be a mid- rotation starter, scouts who see signs of the fastball keep gaining speed, are projecting a frontline starter. Felix is reported to having strong work ethic and high intelligence.

2011 and 2012 In Review:

Ben Balder projected Felix Jorge as getting the 31st largest bonus. He ended up signing months past the July 2nd for $250,000. There was talk that his fastball had lost command and velocity. After the Twins saw him pitch at the Dominican prospect all star game. That summer the Twins put him on their DSL team where he pitch as a starter and a reliever, showing shaking command at times, but still favorable numbers overall. He was promoted the next year to the Gulf cost league where is ERA and SO improved, though his walked increased slightly.

2013 in Review:

This was the first year where Felix pitched solely from the rotation. He kept the ball on the ground, increased the strikeouts, showed increased velocity, and kept his ERA under 3 again. Some fans at Twins Daily expected a late season promotion to the midwest league, but that didn't happen. He started to pop up on top 20 Twins prospect list, with many holding off judgement until he got out of rookie ball.

What to watch for in 2014:

Felix will be starting in The Cedar Rapids rotation. As you can see from his stats, there isn't a lot of areas he needs to improve on besides reducing his walk rate, but there are 4 general areas to watch for:

1, Can he get off to a strong start. With so many talented starters in High A Fort Myers, Low A Cedar Rapids, and Extended Spring Training, the cream is going to rise to the top, and a slow start could lead to a move to the pen or getting sent down faster than in other years.

2, How will he adapt to more advanced hitter in a colder climate?

3, How will his 2nd half numbers look? This will be his first full season, and durability is key for starter prospects.

4, will he ever smile in a photo. :)

Looking At the Numbers:

Good Outing, Bad Outing, Good Outing, Bad Outing, Good Outing. The five HR he gave up over 3 games is more than the past 3 years combined. His walk rate is higher, is SO rate is lower, and he's only had one quality start.

Looking Past the Numbers:

There has been a few cold weather games so far and a lot of postponed games in his season. As it warms up we should get a better feel for what Jorge is capable of at this level. Unfortunately, there's a lot of competition at the low A Rookie level, he could find himself in the bullpen if he can't go six plus innings. That said, He showing some good starts, he just needs to show more of them.

Not a lot of positive things to update about Jorge. Over the last few starts his ERA has ballooned to 8.80. His walks are up, his Home Runs are up, His losses are up, His strike outs are down.

Jim Crikket...No I mean SD Buhr... No wait Bruce Wayne... Reported that the cold weather has lasted thru May, though no one on the team has used that as a excuse for bad pitching.

Mike Berardino posted on his Twitter account that Rob Anthony said there was nothing wrong with Jorge speed, but was just having problems locating his pitches.

Bottom line: Jorge keeps giving up one really bad inning. It's not an injury, but if he can't find his command soon there is a few other starters I can think of that would like his spot in the rotation.

Jorge lit up for the 4th straight time. Can anyone offer a scouting report? I know he walked 5 tonight over 2.2 innings. Obviously thats really bad, but he also gave up 7 hits. So when he got the ball over, it was getting tagged.

Jorge came in for relief today, not surprisingly he's lost his spot in the rotation for now, here is what Jeremy wrote in his Minor league report 5/26/2014:

"Felix Jorge made his first relief appearances since starting his first eight games. He last 2.2 innings. He gave up a walk and three hits, which resulted in two earned runs. He struck out two. Jorge will be replaced in the rotation by Derrick Penilla."

Jorge Pitched one scoreless inning in relief today. He needs a lot more of these outing to regaining his command, drop his ERA, and to convince the powers that be that he should stay in A ball and get another shot at starting this year.

As Jake Mauer told reporters today, Felix Jorge has been sent back to Extended Spring training. Fernando Romero and Lewis Thorpe are coming to take Felix and Derrick Penilla spot on the Kernels.

Jorge had a couple good relief appearances after being removed from the rotation; dropping is ERA down to.... sigh, 9.00.... 23/20 SO to Walk ratio... and 9 home runs over 39 innings.

This is the right move for the Twins and the right move for Felix Jorge. The Twins have too many good pitching prospects between rookie and A ball, there is no need or reason to keep on some who struggles for two months. Also, making Jorge a bullpen pitcher this early in his career would be a waste of potential. Let she if they can get him back on track down south.

I might have seen the same game. He threw easy but was only hitting 88-89 (once at 93mph). It has been noted that the scoreboard gun is slow but Eades was sitting 91-93 in the same game.

I was pretty bullish on him and it's possible that he just needs to press reset this year. Velocity could be down for a number of reasons although I'm always a little skeptical of rk league fastball increases like stated in the OP. Sometimes I think these are 'I saw one pitch in the mid 90's' instead of 'consistently hitting mid 90's'.

Felix Jorge returned to the Appy league today and this was his line for his 1st rookie league start of the year: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. This is a big improvement over his A ball numbers and hopefully after several strong starts he can prove he's rightened the ship and return to Cedar Rapids.

Felix has now has 3 starts in the Appy League this year. He has not given up a run, Better SO/ Walk ration 12/7 over 15 IP and Better ground out ration with a GO/AO of 1.80

Given the state of the Kernels Pitching staff, a return to A ball seems possible, but Jorge needs to continue his progress and keep cutting back on the walks. The Twins won't want to promote him unless their confident he can show better control at higher levels and avoid the "One Bad Innings" he seems prone too.

  • 1 month later...

Summer Break has made me slack off on my adopt a prospect, but Felix Jorge hasn't. He racked up a few accolades including a pitcher of the day from Baseball America on Aug. 11 for his near No-no (But not from Twins Daily huh ;-) ) and Pitcher of the Year for the Appy League.

He had another Quality Start Last night going 6.2 innings, giving up 3 earned runs, 6 hits, and 6 Strikeouts.

His stat line.

The Future for Felix is at a cross roads. After putting up even more dominate numbers in his 2nd season in the Appy League, he can't learn anything more there. But if he struggles again in the Midwest, there are a lot of good pitchers fighting for way too few roster spots. My prediction: he starts next year in the Kernels bullpen. once he puts up good numbers he replaces the 1st demoted/promoted starter. If he struggles again at starting, a more permanent move to the bullpen might be in the cards.
