Building a winning culture in an organization starts in the minor leagues. There has been a lot of losing in Minnesota leading into this season's surprise hunt for the playoffs. However, the Twins have been building up a solid young core throughout the organization which has started to garner some results.Nate Rowan, the PR guru for the Rochester Red Wings, tweeted out an interesting fact. Entering play on Sunday afternoon, the Minnesota Twins affiliates had the best collective winning percentage in the minors at .595 (396-270). This was a percentage point ahead of the Yankees (453-309). Could the Twins affiliates continue their winning ways? RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 6, Louisville 13 Box Score Rochester pitchers allowed runs in each of the first four innings including a big seven-run fourth frame to put themselves well behind in this one. Stephen Gonsalves was roughed up as he was charged with six earned runs in only three innings. He gave up three home runs and walked three on the way to his first Triple-A loss. It was the first time he allowed six earned runs or more since last July and it was the first time in his professional career he allowed multiple home runs. Heck, he only allowed three home runs all of last season. Things didn't go well for Mason Melotakis in relief of Gonsalves. He couldn't make it out of the fourth inning and was charged with seven earned runs. He walked four and struck out one. Luke Bard and Leonardo Reginatto combined for 4.1 shutout innings. Bard struck out three in 2.1 frames and Reginatto was perfect over the final two. Niko Goodrum and ByungHo Park each went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. JB Schuck and Anthony Recker each had multi-hit games. Shuck added his 24th double and a pair of RBI. In the entire game, the team didn't record a walk while going 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 11, Tennessee 6 Box Score Chattanooga pounded out multiple runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings to outlast Tennessee. Even with 17 hits, Brian Olson was the lone Lookouts batter to record an extra-base hit. Seven of the nine batters in the line-up recorded multiple hits and all but two batters had at least one RBI. Jonathan Rodriguez and Andy Wilkins each reached base four time while scoring three runs apiece. T.J. White went 3-for-5 with five RBI. Lewis Thorpe made his Double-A debut and tossed six innings. He allowed four runs on five hits (two home runs) while striking out seven and walking two. Todd Van Steensel pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Sam Clay ran into some trouble in the ninth as he walked five batters, so Gabriel Moya was called on for his 22nd save. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 2, Tampa 3 Box Score Fort Myers jumped out to an early lead in this one with Sean Miller getting things going in the first. He singled in front of a pair of walks by Brandon Lopez and Brent Rooker. Miller scored on a balk to put the Miracle up 1-0 but the offense went cold until the late innings. Brady Anderson started for Fort Myers and kept the game close. Errors by Zander Wiel and Mitchell Kranson meant that only one earned run was charged to Anderson. He threw five innings and struck out one but was still saddled with a tough-luck loss. Anthony McIver, Michael Kohn and Alex Muren each pitched a shutout inning to keep the game close. With one out in the eighth inning, Wiel tried to make up for his error earlier in the game. He clocked his 11th home run of the season to cut the lead to 3-2. Rooker would get a shot in the ninth with two runners in scoring position but he would be called out on strikes to end the game. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 12, Beloit 2 Box Score Royce Lewis and Travis Blankenhorn each posted a four-hit game as part of a season-high 23-hit effort for the Kernels. All 10 Kernels batters reached safely. Cedar Rapids plated one run in the first, second and fourth innings before exploding for six runs in the fifth. Lewin Diaz went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Jimmy Kerrigan, Shane Carrier and Joe Cronin all had multiple extra-base hits with Kerrigan falling a home run short of the cycle. Tyler Beardsley was able to coast through six innings by allowing one earned run on eight hits. He struck out four and didn't issue a walk. He hadn't earned a win since May 3 so this one had to feel good. It was the first time Beardsley hadn't allowed multiple earned runs since July 8, which was only a three-inning stint. Ryan Mason allowed one earned run in his two innings of work. Max Cordy finished off the ninth by striking out the side. E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton 2, Johnson City 8 Box Score The E-Twins were up 2-0 after three innings but the bullpen faltered as the Cardinals scored multiple runs in the fifth and sixth frames. Akil Baddoo walked to start the first and moved to third on a Wander Javier double. Jose Miranda drove in Baddoo with a single but Javier was thrown out at home. Javier started the third with a double and eventually scored on a Kolton Kendrick sacrifice fly but that was the end of the club's scoring. Brusdar Graterol started and only gave up one hit in four shutout innings. He struck out five and walked one. Melvi Acosta took the loss as he allowed five earned runs over two innings. Rickey Ramirez also ran into some trouble as he walked five in 2.2 frames. Juan Gamez was asked to get the final out of the game and he got a strikeout. It was a full slate of baseball on Thursday as the Twins hosted Oakland and all of the affiliates were in action (including one playing a doubleheader). While there were no moves in the minor leagues, the Twins optioned Buddy Boshers after Tuesday's slugfest and activated Hector Santiago from the bereavement list on Wednesday.RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 5, Buffalo 3 (Game 1) Box Score David Hurlbut gave the Red Wings a solid effort in the front end of a doubleheader. Hurlbut was touched up for eight hits over five innings, but he allowed only three runs (two earned) while striking out two and walking one. He allowed a two-out, two-run home run to let Buffalo back into the game in the third inning. Hurlbut did coax nine outs by way of the groundball, which is impressive. Alan Busenitz and Alex Wimmers each threw scoreless frames to finish the game. Busenitz struck out one in a perfect sixth inning. Wimmer walked two in the seventh inning. Rochester did damage with their bats in the top half of the second inning. Matt Hague singled to start off the frame and was advanced to third on a Daniel “Power” Palka double. John Ryan Murphy drove them both in with a one-out single. After a Quintin Berry single moved Murphy to second, both were driven in on a Bengie Gonzalez triple. Murphy added an insurance run in the seventh inning with his second home run of the season. Rochester 1, Buffalo 4 (Game 2) Box Score Nik Turley made his Rochester debut and it certainly wasn’t memorable from a production standpoint. After giving up a single in the first and a walk and single in the second, but escaping without damage, Turley hoped to calm down in the third and started the inning by getting a called strike three. Then the trouble started. Turley allowed two straight singles and both players advanced on a wild pitch. A walk eventually loaded the bases. After another wild pitch allowed the game’s first run to score, Turley got the second out by pop up and looked to be getting out of the inning without further damage. But Bengie Gonzalez committed an error allowing an unearned run score. Two other runs followed in the inning. Turley didn’t come back for the fourth. He finished with three innings, four runs (three earned), five strikeouts, two walks and a loss. Despite his costly air, Gonzalez did have a decent night at the plate. He was the only player with a multi-hit game and scored the team’s lone run. Ben Paulsen had his third double. Rochester is currently 13-10. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 7, Pensacola 4 Box Score Paul Clemens spotted Pensacola four runs in the first four innings, but held on to make it through six innings. Clemens allowed eight hits and a walk which resulted in four runs. He struck out seven. The bats got going in the bottom of the fourth and didn’t stop. The surge was led by Edgar Corcino, who hit his fifth home run of the season in the fifth inning. Corcino had three hits and a walk, drove in three runs and scored once. LaMonte Wade hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot, in the seventh inning. He also had three hits. Nick Gordon also hit a home run, his second, in his two-hit game. Todd Van Steensel threw two shutout innings and struck out two to pick up the win. John Curtiss earned his fourth save of the season, weathering a walk and double in a rough ninth inning to close it out. The win got the Lookouts back to .500 at 13-13. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 2, Daytona 5 Box Score David Fischer took the loss, allowing five first-inning runs. It turned out to be all the runs Fischer would allow in his four innings of work. All told, three hits, three walks and two hit batsmen did Fischer in. Brady Anderson gave up one hit in three solid innings of work. Anthony McIver allowed a hit in two innings. Not a lot of offensive firepower on Wednesday for the Miracle. Zander Wiel hit his ninth double of the year and scored on Shane Kennedy’s first double. Kennedy then stole third base and was driven in by Brian Navarreto. The Miracle lineup struck out 12 times. Fort Myers dropped to 13-14 on the season. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 6, Lake County 3 Box Score Cedar Rapids used a balanced offensive attack and solid performances from their staff to win Wednesday’s tilt. Tyler Beardsley struck out seven in seven strong innings. He allowed three runs on a walk and five hits (two solo home runs). He picked up his third win of the season. Alex Robinson struck out two and earned a hold. He allowed two hits. Max Cordy picked up his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. He struck out one. Despite giving up an early run, the Kernels answered back quickly. Jermaine Palacios extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a leadoff hit. He would come around to score on a Jaylin Davis groundout. Palacios is hitting a cool .391 on the young season. After getting behind in the third inning, the Kernels strung together some keys hits to regain the lead. Christian Cavaness hit a leadoff double and scored on a Mitch Kranson single. Both Kranson and Jaylin Davis, who walked, scored when Ben Rortvedt doubled. Cedar Rapids added two more in the bottom of the sixth. Aaron Whitefield singled, Brandon Lopez walked and Shane Carrier drove them both in with a double. Davis and Whitefield also both stole bases, their third and fourth respectively. The only batter in the lineup who has not yet been mentioned is Tuesday’s hero, Lewin Diaz, who went 1-4. Cedar Rapids has ridden this hot streak to a 15-10 record. Seth will be in Cedar Rapids til Sunday, so there will be lots of Kernel talk popping off. On Tuesday night two of the Twins affiliate's games were affected by rain with one being postponed, but there was still plenty of action. One hitter kept a hot streak alive in AAA while his teammate picked up his first International League win on the mound. A shutout was pitched in the Midwest League, and in Fort Myers players worked hard on a Miracle comeback.To find out how it all went down on Tuesday in the minor leagues, and if that comeback was completed, read on! RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 5, Gwinnett 2 Box Score The Red Wings offense jumped all over Braves starter and top pitching prospect Sean Newcomb for five runs in the first two innings. His wildness loaded the bases before a ball was put in play in the first, and Kennys Vargas did so loudly with a bases-clearing triple (he thought it was a grand slam). Daniel Palka stayed hot and followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0 after one, and a Matt Hague RBI single in the second was plenty to allow Rochester to never look back. Left-hander David Hurlbut picked up his first win of the season and his first in AAA as he went 5.2 innings in the start. He allowed just one run (unearned) on three hits and three walks. He struck out seven. D.J. Baxendale came on to finish the sixth inning after Hurlbut gave up the run, and started off by walking old-friend-not-known-for-drawing-walks Adam Brett Walker, his second free pass of the game (he’s hitting .147 with a .490 OPS, if you were wondering). Trevor Hildenberger was able to record only one out in the seventh before rain came down and delayed the game. When play resumed, Drew Rucinski was the pitcher and he finished the final 2.2 innings. He allowed one run on three hits while striking out four. Palka finished 2-4 with an RBI, Leonardo Reginatto scored two runs out of the leadoff spot, and Hague also drew three walks in the win. All eyes will be on Jose Berrios on Wednesday as he makes his third start of the season, where he’s been nothing short of spectacular so far, alongside, at Target Field, a scuffling Kyle Gibson. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Biloxi 0, Chattanooga 0 (Suspended after 2 innings) Box Score The Lookouts game with the Biloxi Shuckers was suspended after two innings due to rain, and will be completed on Wednesday as a makeshift double-header starting early. The suspended game will finish its nine innings, while game two will go seven. Matt Tracy was the starter for Chattanooga, and had struck out two and allowed only a walk when play was stopped. Nick Gordon led off the bottom of the first with a double, but was stranded when the next three hitters went down on strikes. Dan Rohlfing and Dan Gamache started the second with consecutive singles and each moved up a base on a wild pitch, but still weren’t able to score. Fernando Romero is the probable starter for Chattanooga in Wednesday’s regularly scheduled contest. MIRACLE MATTERS Florida 5, Fort Myers 4 Box score Despite out-hitting the Fire Frogs 13-9 for the game, the Miracle were always playing from behind and couldn’t quite finish any comebacks in this one. Dereck Rodriguez took the mound for the home team and surrendered single runs in each of the first three innings as Fort Myers fell behind 3-0. It wasn’t all his fault however, as errors from Alex Perex at second base and Nelson Molina at shortstop led to the first two. Three singles in the third led to his only earned run on the game, and he settled in from there to finish with a quality start and retired the last eight hitters he faced. In his six innings he allowed six hits and walked two, while striking out six. Fort Myers closed the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the third as Molina reached base on a strikeout that got away from the catcher to start the inning, and advanced all the way to third when the throw to first sailed into right field. A double from Perez drove him in, and he scored on a triple from Zander Wiel later in the frame. That score remained until the seventh when Jonny Drozd came on in relief for the Miracle. Consecutive doubles made it 4-2 in favor of Florida. Fort Myers snuffed out a double-steal attempt at home and also got force-out at home in the inning to keep the Fire Frogs from doing any more damage. Williams Ramirez pitched a one-two-three eighth inning, striking out two in the process before the Miracle got a rally started in the bottom half. Wiel and Trey Vavra started the inning with singles before Wiel took off on a steal attempt of third. The catcher's throw was off target and he came around to score to again pull within one. They had the bases loaded later in the frame with just one out, but weren’t able to tie it up. A double in the ninth added an earned run to Ramirez’s line, but he finished two innings with one hit and two walks allowed, with four strikeouts. The ninth inning again was promising at the start, as a Max Murphy double and Chris Paul made the score 5-4, but three consecutive strikeouts finished the game and the last of their comeback attempts. The four game series continues on Wednesday at 5:35PM CST with Cody Stashak on the mound for Fort Myers. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 5, Peoria 0 Box Score The Kernels pitching staff dominated the Chiefs on Tuesday night, with starter Tyler Beardsley leading the way. He allowed five hits and one walk in his six scoreless innings, striking out six along the way. He didn’t allow a runner past second base until his final inning, and only stolen bases got a runner there before that. Andrew Vasquez and Tom Hackimer combined to finish the game with three perfect innings. Vasquez picked up a hold with a one-two-three seventh that included two strikeouts, and Hackimer picked up the save with three strikeouts of his own in the final two innings. It took until the sixth inning before the Kernels were able to strike, but Mitchell Kranson’s third double of the year was a big one to make it 2-0 in favor of the good guys. Jaylin Davis added an RBI single in the eighth to make it 3-0, and Travis Blankenhorn and Lewin Diaz added RBI singles in the top of the ninth to make the final score. Blankenhorn (2-4, 2 R’s, RBI), Diaz (2-5, RBI), and Davis (3-4, R, RBI) had multiple hit efforts in the victory. Jermaine Palacios scored two runs and stole his second base of the season. Early season standout Eduardo Del Rosario toes the rubber for Cedar Rapids in the series finale Wednesday morning. We continue to get to know more and more of the Minnesota Twins minor leaguers and recent draft picks today. Tyler Beardsley was the Twins 16th round pick this past June out of California State - Sacramento. After signing, Beardsley was sent to Elizabethton. He pitched 34 innings in seven games (five starts) and went 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA. He walked six and struck out 33. He was promoted to Cedar Rapids where he made five more starts before being shut down for the year. He went 1-2 but had a 3.86 ERA. He will likely begin the 2017 season back with the Kernels but should have an opportunity to pitch in Ft. Myers if things go well.Take a few minutes to get to know right-handed pitcher, Tyler Beardsley, the player and the person. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Seth Stohs (SS): Growing up in southern California, who was your favorite team to follow? Who were some of your favorite players? Tyler Beardsley (TB): Being a southern California guy, I have always been a big fan of the Angels and still am to this day. As a kid I would always go to their games with my friends and family. Some of my favorite baseball players I enjoyed/enjoy watching were Vladimir Guerrero, John Lackey, Mike Trout, Garrett Richards, and Kris Bryant. SS: What were some of the better memories of your high school baseball career? Did you play other sports or were you involved in other activities? TB: My favorite memories about playing high school baseball were creating lifelong friendships with every one of my teammates. My freshman year of baseball, I was a part of a league championship team. Going into my senior year I decided to play basketball and also won a league championship that year. Little things like this I will cherish forever. Always nice to hang out with your former teammates and talk about those memories. SS: What was the recruitment process like for you out of high school, and what was it about Cal State-Sacramento that made you want to pitch there? TB: Coming out of high school I believe I had two junior colleges who were interested in me. Honestly, I didn't pitch very much in high school but happened to start one game in Wasco and had a coach who took interest in my pitching ability. I spoke with him after the game, and he had great things to say about me. I took a visit up to the college and loved everything about it. After that, I decided to go to College of Sequoias for two years. During my sophomore year, I was recruited by Sacramento State and believed it would be a perfect fit. I loved everything they had to offer me. Incredible coaching staff and a great program that is continuing to grow to be a top Division 1 baseball program. SS: What was the experience for your at Cal State-Sacramento? What were some of your highlights and favorite moments in your four years there? TB: I had an incredible experience at Sacramento State. Not only was I given the opportunity to play baseball, but I was able to work on my degree at the same time. One of these days, baseball will come to end, so it was important for me to study something that I was interested in. Criminal Justice was my major and I'm hoping to become a California Highway Patrol in the future. My two years at COS I was a part of a championship team in 2014 and made it all the way to the state finals. The two years I was at Sacramento State, my favorite moment was getting the win in the final two innings when playing fifth-ranked LSU in Baton Rouge in front of about 13,000 fans and about 30 Hornet fans along the left field foul line. SS: Did you have the chance to speak with many scouts before the draft? Where did you think that you might be drafted? What was your interaction with Twins scouts before the draft? TB: Before the draft I spoke with quite a few scouts. At the time, I wasn't really worried about where I was going to be drafted. I was just looking for an opportunity to continue to play the game that I love and just make the best of it. My interaction with the Twins was slim, but I knew they were interested in me. I was very excited that the Twins picked me in the 16th round. Great organization and I hope to be a part of it as long as possible. SS: When you did hear your name in the 16th round, where were you? What your reaction and the reaction of those close to you? TB: When I heard my named called in the 16th round, I was with my family here in my hometown Tehachapi. It was the best day of my life. This is something I have been dreaming about since I was a little kid. Friends, family, and coaches were blowing up my phone congratulating me for a couple days. I will never forget that day for as long as I live. SS: What has the adjustment like for you, from the amateur/college game to the professional game, both on and off the field? TB: I would have to say it was a little bit of an adjustment coming into the minor leagues. One thing that was new to me was playing almost every single day. In college I was about four times a week. I believe I had four days off in about four months. That was one major adjustment but another would be the competition is a lot better. I was pleased the way everything turned out in my first short season. Learned a lot and I’ll be ready to go next year. SS: To what do you attribute your success in the Elizabethton and in Cedar Rapids? TB: What made me successful while playing in Elizabethton and Cedar Rapids was just playing the game the right way. I wasn't trying to do too much. Whether it's making sure I'm throwing strikes each start or getting outs any way I could or just showing up to the field on time. Little things like this are noticed throughout the organization and can go a long way. I just tried to do the little things the right way for the time I was there. Another thing I wanted to do was try to be consistent with each start. This is something that is tough to do, but that is the game of baseball and that's why I love it so much. SS: What was it like pitching in Cedar Rapids in the playoff hunt and in the playoffs? What was the atmosphere like there? TB: During our playoff hunt, it was important for us to put together wins late in the year. I was called up around August, and when I got there I knew we were in a spot where we needed to win a few games so that we could clinch a playoff spot. I made about five starts while I was in Cedar Rapids and each one of those starts I did my best to put us in a position to win each game. I was put on the DL for playoffs but got a great look on what it's like to pitch in the playoffs. Atmosphere was great at each game we played. SS: What pitches do you throw, and what would you consider your out pitch? TB: Fastball, Slider, curveball, and change-up are the pitches I throw. I would have to say my slider can definitely be my out pitch. Still working on it because I just started to throw a slider about a year ago. SS: At this very early stage in your career, what would you say are your biggest strengths? TB: Being 22, i feel like I have so much more to learn about the game of baseball whether it's the mental, or physical part of the game. I believe I've got much more room to grow so that i can become a better baseball player. SS: What are the areas of your game that you would like to spend time working to improve in the offseason and going forward? TB: I'm focused on getting as strong as possible this offseason and really getting my body right for this long upcoming season. I need to be absolutely ready to go for spring training and getting on a full season team. SS: Are you be going back to school in the offseason? What is your major in school? TB: I will not be going back to school this off season.Hoping to go back to school this next off-season but for now I'm enjoying the time off with my family and friends. While in college I was studying Criminal Justice. I want to become a CHP in the future. SS: What are some of the things you enjoy doing away from the game of baseball? TB: When I'm not playing baseball, I like to be outdoors for the most part. I love fishing, shooting guns, riding motorcycles, camping, etc. SS: Who are some of the people who have helped you get to this point in your career? TB: Each and every one of my coaches, family members, teammates, and trainers that I had throughout college have helped me get to where I am today. Can’t thank them enough for their support throughout my college career. SS: Favorite baseball movie? If the season had started 10 games ago, the Twins would have the second best record in the American League. Too bad the Twins had been terrible for the better part of four months before this brief stretch. Buck Britton led the offensive charge, 2-4 with a double and a run scored. The pitching staff didn't fare much better, as starter Jason Wheeler gave up four earned runs over 6.0 innings. He gave up eight hits, walked four, struck out one and gave up a home run. Alex Wimmers had a terrible relief stint, managing just 0.2 innings, giving up five runs (three earned), via five hits. Sean Burnett finished the inning, striking out the only batter he faced. Neil Ramirez gave up a run in the bottom of the eighth to finish the game. Final: Red Wings 1, IronPigs 10 LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN Jacksonville Suns @ Chattanooga Box Score More Omar Bencomo, more of the time! Bencomo gave the Suns fits over 7.0 innings. Bencomo gave up just two hits. He walked one and struck out five. Raul Fernandez and Ryan Eades each gave the Lookouts an inning of scoreless relief to complete a 3-hit shutout. The Lookouts only tallied six hits of their own, but two of them were doubles, and two more of them went over the fence, so that was plenty. Ryan Walker led the way with a 2-3 game, with a double, a home run, two runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk. Nike Goodrum had a two-run dinger as part of his 1-4 night. Dereck Rodriguez was tagged with the loss in his Fort Myers debut, despite 7.0 innings of one-hit ball. He gave up two runs, walked two and struck out six. Cam Booser added a clean inning of relief, sending the Stone Crabs down 1-2-3. Tough night with the sticks for the Miracle, who teamed up for seven strikeouts, two walks, and those same three hits. The Miracle scored their lone run on a solo home run from Chris Paul (1-4). Final: Miracle 1, Stone Crabs 2 KERNELS KORNER Peoria Chiefs @ Cedar Rapids Box Score The Chiefs put up three runs in the top of the first against Tyler Beardsley, and then had just one more hit the rest of the night. Beardsley pitched 5.0 innings, gave up three hits, three runs, walked four and struck out one. He was replaced by Williams Ramirez, who had a spectacular relief outing, going three full innings giving up just one hit. Max Cordy pitched the bottom of the ninth. He was a little rocky, walking two batters, but struck out two and kept the Chiefs off the board. Leadoff man Christian Ibarra led the way for the Kernels, he was 2-4 with a solo home run.
