It was a very full day in the Twins minor league system on Thursday. There were again a ton of transactions. Rochester played two games that started in the morning. Each of the other affiliates played also (as we wait for the GCL Twins to start next Monday). Brent Rooker and Royce Lewis each have three homers in their past three games, and there were a bunch of firsts for Elizabethton.Find out everything that happened happened in the Twins system on Thursday, starting with the transactions of the day. TRANSACTIONS The Twins signed third-round pick Spencer Speer on Wednesday. They have also now signed Nate Hadley and Jake Hirabayashi. When the game started, Cody Stashak made the spot start and was very good. He gave up one run on two hits over three innings. Fernando Romero came in to start the fourth inning and got four outs, but then the rains came. When play resumed, Adam Bray made his first AAA appearance in the Twins organization and earned his first win. He gave up one run on two hits and a walk over 3 2/3 innings.He struck out two. Lefty Ian Krol made his first appearance in the Twins organization and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning. When the game resumed, the score was tied 1-1. The Red Wings run came on Brent Rooker’s ninth homer of the season. In the seventh inning, Zander Wiel knocked his 11th homer of the year, a three-run shot that proved huge. Columbus scored one but the Wings added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Jaylin Davis’s first AAA hit scored a run, and later Nick Gordon’s 12th double of the season drove in another run. Davis and LaMonte Wade each went 1-for-3 with a walk. Wade hit his eighth double. Elizabethton started its quest for another Appalachian League title on Friday night with a road game. They got a strong start and some youngsters really stepped up their offense in a nice win. They can clinch a spot in the championship series with a win on Saturday (or Sunday, if needed). In addition, Lewis Thorpe and Tyler Wells had strong starts. TRANSACTIONS The Twins announced that Matt Belisle would be activated from the DL on Saturday.September call ups for Saturday will include: Johnny Field, Chris Gimenez and Tyler Duffey. There had been reports from Rochester that Zack Littell left the field with his duffle bag. It's possible that they just aren't going to activate him until Sunday or something.It appears LHP Andrew Vasquez has been called up as well. He began the 2018 season in Ft. Myers.. RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 1, Lehigh Valley 3 Box Score Lewis Thorpe made his final minor league start of the 2018 season on Friday night, though he still took the loss. The southpaw from Australia worked the first seven innings. He was charged with three unearned runs on four hits and a walk. He struck out eight. He gave up the three runs in the sixth innings. With one out, Thorpe committed an error, then walked a batter. The big blow was a three-run homer that followed. Ryne Harper worked two scoreless, hitless innings. The Red Wings managed just five hits. Jon Kemmer had two hits. Zander Wiel added a single and a walk. Byron Buxton was 0-for-3 with a strikeout. He was also hit by a pitch. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 4, Jackson 1 Box Score It’s been a terrific season for righty Tyler Wells. He gave up just one run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. He uncharacteristically walked four, but he (characteristically) struck out eight. Casey Crosby got the final out of the sixth inning and worked a scoreless seventh frame as well. Tyler Jay worked a scoreless eighth inning, and Devin Smeltzer recorded his third save with a perfect ninth. Jimmy Kerrigan led the offense. He went 3-for-4 with his seventh double. Luis Arraez added two singles. Mitchell Kranson singled and walked twice. Luke Raley was 1-for-3 with a walk and drove in two runs. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 2, Clearwater 10 Box Score The Miracle came into the season’s final weekend with a 1 1/2 game lead for a playoff spot. On this night, they were unable to help their own cause. Griffin Jax had his first rough start of the season. He gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks in just 2 2/3 innings. Kevin Marnon came on and gave up two runs on five hits, a walk and a hit batter over the next two innings. Alex Phillip made his Twins debut and threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings without even giving up a base runner. He struck out two. Adam Bray was charged with two runs on six hits over the final two innings. He struck one out. Phillips was signed out of the independent Frontier League this week. Reports indicate that he is aggressive in the strike zone. His fastball sits 91 to 93 mph and he has both a slider and a curveball, both of which were referred to as “good pitches.” Royce Lewis went 2-for-4 in the game. Alex Kirilloff went 1-for-1 with three walks. He homered in his first at-bat of the game. It was his 20th overall of the season. He also has 101 RBI. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 5, Burlington 2 Box Score How did Michael Davis last until the 24th round in this year’s draft. All he’s done since signing is mash to the tune of a .308 average with now nine home runs. The biggest came tonight when, down a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, he crushed a grand slam that proved to be the game winner. Gabriel Maciel went 3-for-4. Victor Tademo was 2-for-3 with a walk and his first Midwest League double. Melvi Acosta started. The righty gave up two runs on five hits and a walk in just five innings. He struck out two. Moises Gomez came on and threw two zeroes on the scoreboard. Zach Neff worked both the eighth and ninth frames to be credited with the Win. E-TWINS E-TALK Elizabethton 7, Kingsport 3 Box Score The E-Twins began their annual playoff run with a game in Kingsport. After the win, Game 2 (and Game 3, if necessary) will be played in Elizabethton. The offense showed up, but it was a terrific start by 2018 pick Josh Winder. The seventh-round pick gave up one run on four hits over the first six innings. He walked none and struck out eight. JT Perez came in for the seventh and got two outs. However, he gave up one run on one hit and three walks. Both outs he recorded came on strikeouts. Jacob Blank got the final seven outs to record the save. Five of the outs came on strikeouts. He gave up one run on one hit and two walks. Yunior Severino and Ricky De La Torre, the youngest players on the team, each had three hits. Severino had a double. Gilberto Celestino went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer. Alex Robles had two hits and drove in three runs. Chris Williams had a single and two walks. In 2017, the Elizabethton Twins won the Appalachian League championship. The team will begin their quest to defend the title on Tuesday night when they host the Burlington Royals at Joe O’Brien Stadium in Elizabethton.Led by manager Ray Smith, Elizabethton won its seventh Appy League title in 2017. Smith, who was signed by the Twins as an undrafted free agent in 1977, enters his 32nd season in the Elizabethton Twins coaching staff, his 25th as the manager. He played in 63 games for the E-Twins during that 1977 season. He played in 83 games for the Twins between 1981 and 1983. He comes into the season with an overall managerial record of 977-648. Former Twins first-round draft pick (1980) Jeff Reed, who played for the Twins from 1984 through 1986, enters his 17th season as the Elizabethton hitting coach. The 17-year major league veteran also works with the E-Twins catchers. Pitching coach Luis Ramirez has been with Elizabethton the past three seasons. Before that, he was the GCL pitching coach for two years. He came to the Twins organization in 2006 as the pitching coordinator for the Twins at their Venezuelan Academy. For the first time, Elizabethton will have a fourth coach on staff. Takashi Miyoshi has spent the past seven seasons coaching in independent leagues Prospects To Watch The Elizabethton Twins Opening Day roster (including the DL) includes just one player who ranked in the preseason Twins Daily Top 20 Prospect rankings. Yunior Severino was our choice for the Twins #18 prospect. The infielder from the Dominican Republic signed a year earlier with Atlanta. However, when MLB announced sanctions on the team for illegal practices, Severino became a free agent. After a solid showing as a 17-year-old in the GCL last year, the Twins signed him as a free agent for $2.5 million. Severino is a good athlete with a strong swing from both sides of the plate. He has some power potential. Defensively, he could play shortstop, but he’ll likely mostly play second base. The reason is, at least in part, because of Ricky De La Torre. The Twins sixth-round draft pick out of high school in Puerto Rico is a very talented shortstop. On a roster where most of the players are 21 or 22 years old, the two 18-year-olds will form a very talented, athletic keystone combination. 2018 first-round draft pick, Trevor Larnach, will likely join the E-Twins at some point following the Oregon State College World Series run. Even if his stay is fairly short, we should anticipate him spending some time in eastern Tennessee. Second-round pick Ryan Jeffers will also begin his professional career with the E-Twins. You're all aware of the Wander Javier shoulder surgery that cost him this entire season. In addition, lefty Riley Widell, who pitched for Elizabethton last year, came down with mono this spring, so he's been gradually regaining his strength. Miguel DeJesus, who missed the entire 2017 season due to Tommy John surgery, could also surface with the E-Twins this summer. Outfielder Matt Albanese is also on the DL to start the season. Carlos Suniaga was just sent to the E-Twins over the weekend. Most likely, the organization would like to see him start and he’s been working out of the bullpen for the Kernels. Derek Molina and Ricky Ramirez have already seen some time with the Kernels as well. At the rookie levels, it is difficult to know the roles of players, especially pitchers. The pitchers drafted out of college this year have likely already thrown a lot of innings, and have been throwing since January. So, the Twins will limited their innings and starters may work out of the bullpen. That’s also why the rookie level events can have up to 35 players on the roster. The Catchers Trevor Casanova (21) - 13th round pick in 2018 out of Cal St-Northridge Andrew Cosgrove (21) - 17th round pick in 2017 from North Carolina State Ryan Jeffers (21) - 2nd round pick in 2018 out of UNC-Wilmington Chris Williams (21) - 8th round pick in 2018 from Clemson University The Twins drafted a lot of college catchers in 2018, and the first three they selected are all going to be in Elizabethton. As these guys adjust to the professional baseball game, they will all catch probably twice a week, at least early in the season. They may get extra at bats by DHing or playing some at another position. The Infielders Ricky De La Torre (18) - 6th round pick in 2017 out of high school in Puerto Rico Hunter Lee (22) - 27th round pick in 2018 out of High Point University Ariel Montesino (22) - signed May 2013 from the Dominican Republic Yunior Severino (18) - Free agent from Atlanta from the Dominican Republic. Played for GCL Braves last year. Alex Robles (22) - 30th round pick in 2017 from Austin Peay University Robles was a two-way player all four years in college. The organization has decided to have him start his career as a hitter, knowing they could move him to the mound later. He has already spent a couple of weeks with both the Ft. Myers Miracle and Chattanooga Lookouts. Montesino split 2017 between Elizabethton and Cedar Rapids and sprinkled in a couple of games with Ft. Myers. This is the fourth season he will have spent time with the E-Twins yet remains just 22. Lee is a 5-9 second baseman who was all Big South this year. He had a 28 game hitting streak earlier in the season. As mentioned above, Severino and De La Torre are the two big prospects on this opening day roster, in part, because of their relative youth, along with their immense talent. The Outfielders Jared Akins (21) - 13th round pick in 2017 from Fresno State Colton Burns (22) - 18th round pick in 2017 from UC-Santa Barbara DaShawn Keirsey (21) - 4th round pick in 2018 out of Utah Lean Marrero (20) - 16th round pick in 2015 out of high school in Puerto Rico Albee Weiss (22) - 23rd round pick in 2018 from Cal St-Northridge As mentioned Trevor Larnach will likely join the E-Twins in the next two or three weeks. Keirsey is the very talented fourth-round pick that may have still been available because he missed lots of time with injury. Marrero spent a few weeks in Cedar Rapids last year, until he suffered a broken hamate bone which cost him the rest of his season. Akins and Burns played at strong college programs. Both have very good size and tools, but they need patience. It was strange when the Twins drafted a second catcher from Cal State-Northridge in this year’s draft, but Weiss has already been moved to the outfield. Prospect heads rejoice! It’s time to revisit the top prospects list. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be revealing the Twins Daily Midseason Top 40 Prospects List. That’s right, we’re expanding the size of the official site rankings, doubling upward from our preseason list. The journey starts today with numbers 40 through 36.40. Aaron Whitefield – CF Age: 21 ETA: 2020 2018 Stats (A+/Rk): .220/.301/.293 (.594 OPS), 3 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 23 K, 9 BB 2018 Ranking: NR | 2017 Ranking: NR Seth: 29 | Tom: NR | Cody: 42 Whitefield just recently returned to action with the MIracle. He suffered a broken hamate bone in late April, which forced him to miss all of May and most of June. He made a name for himself with the Kernels last year flashing both speed (33 stolen bases) and power (11 homers). He’s also a legit center fielder. Over the winter, Whitefield won his third-straight Claxton Shield (which is awarded to the Australian Baseball League champions). Here’s hoping he can get back healthy and continue to build momentum. 39. Jaylin Davis – RF Age: 24 ETA: 2019 2018 Stats (AA/A+): .265/.358/.395 (.753 OPS), 11 2B, 0 3B, 6 HR, 67 K, 27 BB 2018 Ranking: NR | 2017 Ranking: NR Seth: 41 | Tom: 43 | Cody: 35 Over his first two seasons in the system, Davis displayed impressive power but it came with a hefty number of strikeouts and not many walks to offset them. This season, he’s looked like a whole new hitter. After posting a career 30.2 K% and 6.8 BB%, Davis has improved those rates to 25.2 K% and 11.0 BB% in 2018. The power took a dip, but that was to be expected in the FSL. The higher-ups took note of the strides Davis was making, and promoted him up to Chattanooga a couple of weeks ago. 38. Ricky De La Torre – SS Age: 18 ETA: 2022 2018 Stats: .333/.417/.500 (.917 OPS), 3 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 7 K, 3 BB 2018 Ranking: NR | 2017 Ranking: NR Seth: 44 | Tom: 29 | Cody: 43 Drafted out of Puerto Rico, De La Torre made his pro debut last year as a 17-year-old and opted to sign with the Twins instead of heading to Auburn. He cracked three homers with the GCL Twins last year, which doesn’t sound like much, but only 15 batters went deep five or more times in that entire league last season. Shortstop is a crowded spot in the system, which is a good problem to have, but De La Torre may be the best suited of anyone to make the transition to third base due to his strong arm. 37. Lachlan Wells – LHP Age: 21 ETA: 2021 2018 Stats: None, injured. 2018 Ranking: NR | 2017 Ranking: NR Seth: 48 | Tom: 33 | Cody: 32 Another Australian! Wells had Tommy John surgery in mid May and will miss the entire 2018 season. Originally looked over due to his diminutive stature, Wells really filled out the past couple years, though he’ll still never be mistaken for Tyler Wells (who’s listed at 6-foot-8, 265 lbs). In 204 innings as a pro, Lachlan has a 2.74 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and has averaged 8.2 K/9 against just 2.0 BB/9. It’s a shame we won’t get to see him on the mound again for quite some time. 36. Aaron Slegers – RHP ETA: 2018 Age: 25 2018 Stats (AAA): 83.2 IP, 3.55 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 5.9 K/9, 2.0 BB/9, 2.89 K:BB 2018 Ranking: NR | 2017 Ranking: NR Seth: 33 | Tom: 34 | Cody: 45 Slegers lacks the kind of overpowering stuff that puts pitchers higher up on prospect lists, but there’s no questioning his track record of getting outs in the high minors. He’s made five appearances with the Twins over the past two years, but during that time he’s also 20-9 with a 3.38 ERA over 37 starts for Rochester. Slegers pitched the fifth-most innings in the Southern League in 2016, logged the fourth-most innings in the International League last season and is easily pacing his Red Wings teammates in innings so far this year. I have to admit, Tuesday’s minor league report was a lot less fun to write than last Friday’s was, when Twins affiliates combined to go 6-0. That’s because they flipped that record to 0-5 for this one. The only thing keeping them from completely flipping that to six, was because Rochester’s game with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was suspended due to rain in the fourth inning. That was unfortunate too, as one of their hitters put himself in line for the player of the day award for the second day in a row to that point.To find out just how unlucky Twins affiliates were on Tuesday night, read on...at your own risk. TRANSACTIONS There were several transactions that were made official before the games on Tuesday. Nik Turley was optioned back to Rochester after the doubleheader yesterday. In AA, Kohl Stewart was put on the 7-day disabled list with left-knee tendinitis just a day after officially rejoining the Lookouts roster. Alex Muren was called up from Fort Myers and pitched in their game last night. Sam Clay was returned to Fort Myers. In Cedar Rapids, Christian Caveness was placed on the disabled list with a blood clot in his right shoulder. (Get well soon!) To take his roster spot Shane Kennedy was brought up from the Gulf Coast League. In the Appalachian League, Christian Broussard was activated from the DL and made the start last night. RED WINGS REPORT Scranton/WB 4, Rochester 4 (Suspended in top of fourth inning) Box Score Rain suspended the Red Wings game on Tuesday in the top of the fourth inning. The RailRiders had scored two runs in the first two innings to account for their runs, including two solo home runs off starter Aaron Slegers. Byungho Park accounted for all four of Rochester’s runs, with an RBI single in the first and a three run home run in the third. The game will be completed tomorrow before their regularly scheduled game. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Mississippi 6, Chattanooga 5 Box Score Starting for the Lookouts was Dereck Rodriguez, and he made it into the sixth inning before he was chased. In 5.2 innings the Braves scored five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks. He allowed a solo home run and struck out two. Randy Rosario came on in relief with two outs in the sixth and promptly gave up a triple to score two inherited runners. He allowed a run of his own in the seventh and in total allowed four hits while picking up two K’s in 1.1 innings. Alex Muren finished the game with two scoreless frames. He gave up two hits, walked one and struck out two of his own. Chattanooga made a late comeback, getting to 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn’t get the big hit to put them over the top. With the bases loaded in the seventh after three walks and a catcher interference play that allowed one to score, they were able to push just one other runner across on a double-play ball before LaMonte Wade flew out to end the threat. In the eighth, a solo home run from T.J. White got it to 6-5, and two more walks put the tying run in scoring position, but it wasn’t meant to be. Edgar Corcino (2-5, R, HR, RBI) and White (3-4, 2 R’s, 2B, HR, RBI) led the offense with multiple hits. Andy Wilkins had a double in four trips to the plate and Nick Gordon singled and picked up an RBI by drawing a bases-loaded walk. Levi Michael and Brian Navarreto each drew two walks. As a team the Lookouts were just 1-9 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 0, Clearwater 4 Box Score The Miracle were shut out in this one as they managed just four hits. Chris Paul was 2-3 with a triple and was also hit by a pitch to reach base three times. Brent Rooker and Mitchell Kranson collected the other two hits for the offense, both singles. As a team they struck out only six times, but were 0-5 with runners in scoring position. Randy LeBlanc made the start for Fort Myers and went the first five innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out four. The first run of the game for Clearwater came in the fourth inning and they added the other two against LeBlanc in the fifth. Michael Theofanopoulos pitched two scoreless innings of relief, walking two and striking out one. Williams Ramirez pitched the eighth inning, allowing one run on two hits and a walk. He struck out one. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 1, Kane County 9 Box Score Kane County jumped all over Cedar Rapids pitching in this one, building a 7-0 lead before the Kernels put their lone run on the scoreboard. Bryan Sammons took the mound and went the first 3.2 innings. He gave up five runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks. He did strike out six. Patrick McGuff pitched the next 1.1 innings, striking out one but allowing four runs of his own on six hits, including a three-run home run. Logan Lombana finished the game for Cedar Rapids, keeping the Cougars from adding to their blowout in 3.0 scoreless innings. He walked two and struck out one. Lewin Diaz was responsible for the Kernels only run, slugging his 11th home run of the season in the fifth inning. Jimmy Kerrigan was 2-3 batting second in the lineup, and Shane Kennedy added the team's fourth hit. The Cedar Rapids offense did not have a single plate appearance with runners in scoring position as Kane County’s pitcher, Connor Grey, tossed a complete game. The loss halted the Kernels win streak at five and evened both team’s records at 29-29 in the second half of the Midwest League season. Kane County won the Western Division in the first half, and both are 8.5 games behind the second half -leading Quad Cities River Bandits, which Cedar Rapids plays next on their current road trip. E-TWINS E-NOTES Johnson City 4, Elizabethton 3 Box Score Elizabethton took the lead 3-2 in this one in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Andrew Bechtold’s tenth double of the year tied the game at two and a Mark Contreras single brought him in to put them out front. They weren’t able to hold that lead however. Their first run of the game came in the bottom of the third courtesy of a sac fly from Kolton Kendrick. Akil Baddoo finished 1-3 with two walks and stole his fourth base, but was also thrown out for the fourth time. Christian Broussard got the first inning for the Twins and walked the leadoff man, but got the next three. He was replaced by Edward Colina for the second inning. He went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk, with four K’s. Jovani Moran came on with two outs in the seventh and got the final out, but was charged with a blown save in the eighth when he gave up the go-ahead two-run home run to Elizabethton’s bitter rivals. To attempt to make up for that, he did strike out five in 2.1 innings to finish the game. The Twins offense did threaten with two outs in the eighth, but were unable to get a run across to tie the game and went down one-two-three in the bottom of the ninth, all on strikeouts. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Twins 4, GCL Orioles 10 Box Score The Twins were outhit in this one 13-6, and it showed up on the scoreboard as they fell to the Orioles on the road. After the Orioles struck for five runs in the first two innings, the Twins did crawl back to make the score 5-4 after the top of the sixth, but five more runs from the Orioles to answer did them in for good. Tyler Benninghoff made the start and got just one out (likely plan for him coming back from injury is one inning appearances at this point, so don’t read too much into it). He walked two, gave up a two-run homer, and struck out one. Jordan Balazovic came in from there and got out of the first inning, but allowed three runs of his own in the second. He ended up finishing 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out two along the way. Cody Stashak pitched a scoreless fifth inning but surrendered two runs on three hits overall in 1.2 innings, striking out two. Tyler Jay was the next man to get touched up, as he allowed both of Stashak’s inherited runners to score and one of his own while closing out the sixth, then two more on a home run in the seventh. He allowed four hits in 1.0 innings, while striking out one. Amilcar Cruz finally stabilized the scoreboard for the last four outs, walking two and striking out two. On the offensive side, two Twins hitters collected two hits. Benjamin Rodriguez was 2-4 with two runs scored, a homer, and two RBI. His home run was the blast that brought them within one. Ricky De La Torre was 2-3 with a walk, a home run, and RBI. His solo shot got the Twins on the board in the second inning. The rest of the team combined to go 2-25 with 12 K’s. They were just 1-2 with runners in scoring position and left only four men on base overall.
