The Red Wings pitching staff did one better than Vasquez, shutting out the IronPigs. Nick Greenwood went 7.0 innings, gave up four hits, no runs, no walks, and struck out five. Buddy Boshers earned a hold with 1.2 innings of shaky relief, giving up a hit and three walks before being lifted with two outs in the ninth. Edward Mujica came in to save the day and struck out the only batter he faced. The Red Wings managed just four hits on the night, one each from Wilfredo Tovra, Mitch Garver, John Ryan Murphy (designated hitter John Ryan Murphy!), and the aforementioned home run from Tommy Field. Final: IronPigs 0, Red Wings 1 LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN Chattanooga @ Jackson Generals Box Score Southern League Pitcher of the Month, Stephen Gonsalves went just 3.0 innings on Thursday night. He gave up just two hits, but walked four. He gave up a pair of runs and struck out five before being replaced by Todd Van Steensel after throwing 79 pitches to get through three. Van Steensel pitched 3.0 innings, gave up three hits and no runs. He walked one and struck out two. Randy Rosario pitched 2.0 innings, gave up no hits, walked one and struck out three. Raul Fernandez walked a couple, but managed to do enough to keep the Generals off the board and pick up the save. The Lookouts tallied nine hits on the night, two each from Zach Granite (2-5) and Stuart Turner (2-3). Granite added a run scored, a double and a stolen base, while Turner added a run scored and a walk. Final: Lookouts MIRACLE MATTERS Bradenton Marauders @ Fort Myers Box Score The Miracle and the Marauders were suspended due to rain in the middle of the fifth inning, with the Marauders up 2-1. Dereck Rodriguez started the game for the Miracle and was still on the mound, having completed five innings, giving up five hits and two runs. He struck out three and walked no one. With the sticks, Christian Ibarra had a triple and Nick Gordon was 2-2 with a pair of singles and a pair of stolen bases. Final: Suspended KERNELS KORNER Cedar Rapids @ Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Box Score Kernels starter Lachlan Wells struck out ELEVEN over 6.1 innings on Thursday evening. Wells gave up three runs (all unearned) on three hits and zero walks. Wells was lifted in the seventh for Williams Ramirez who pitched 1.2 innings, giving up a single hit and a single run. He struck out one. The Kernels were in good shape through five innings, tied at zero, but gave up a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to fall behind. The Kernels earned one back on a Nelson Molina RBI in the eighth, but couldn't do more, falling 4-1. Molina was 2-4 with that RBI, and Luis Arraez was 2-3 with a double and a walk. Caset Scoggins was the only other Kernels player with a hit, 1-4. Final: Kernels 1, Timber Rattlers 4 E-TWINS E-NOTES Cancelled - Wet Grounds GCL TWINS TALK GCL Twins @ GCL Rays Box Score The Twins were outhit 6-5 but were ahead where it matters after nine innings to take the victory. The Twins were led by Jhon Alvarez, 2-3 with a walk out of the nine hole. The Twins' lone RBI was from their ninth hitter, Emmanuel Morel, 1-3 with a walk and that RBI. The Twins gave up two runs, both earned, charged to starter Moises Gomez. Gomez pitched five innings, gave up four hits, a walk, and struck out six. He was replaced by Matz Schutte who pitched three big innings of relief, giving up just one hit. Garrett Kelly picked up his third save of the season, pitching an inning, walking one, and giving up a hit. It was another interesting day for the Minnesota Twins minor league affiliates. One starter carried a no-hitter into the late innings. Two other starters worked into the sixth inning with shutouts. The Kernels inched closer to a playoff berth thanks to a quality start and three, three-hit games. Byron Buxton kept a streak going. Hey, when the big league club can’t find wins, there are always multiple positives in the farm system! The two Twins short-season affiliates are less than a week from the end of their regular seasons. As of now, Elizabethton would be in the playoffs. The GCL Twins are one game behind the Red Sox. Continue reading for all the details for a Saturday in the minor league parks.RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 5, Scranton/Wilkes Barre 4 (11 innings) Box Score The story of this game through six-plus innings was left-hander Nick Greenwood. He didn’t give up a hit until there were two outs in the seventh inning. Former Twins and Red Wings player Chris Parmelee hit a double to break up the no-no. The next batter homered to end the shutout. So, in total, Greenwood gave up two runs on two hits and two walks in seven innings. He struck out four. Alan Busenitz came on for the eighth inning. He gave two runs on three hits which tied the score at four. The game went to extra innings. Jake Reed threw two scoreless innings, striking out one. The Wings took the lead on the top of the 11th inning. Edward Mujica came on and recorded his 24th save of the International League season, but it was his first save for the Red Wings. He gave up two hits, but he struck out three. For the fourth straight game, Byron Buxton homered. He went 2-6 and the homer was his 11th of the season for the Red Wings. Mitch Garver drove in two runs with his first International League home run. Adam Brett Walker went 2-4 and drove in a run. Wilfredo Tovar hit his 23rd double. In the 11th, he walked to bring in the winning run. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 3, Mississippi 1 Box Score Saturday was Stephen Gonsalves’s turn to start for the Lookouts. He improved to 8-1 and dropped his ERA to 1.64. The southpaw gave up five hits and walked two over 5.2 shutout innings. He struck out six. Todd Van Steensel came on and got the next four outs. He needed just ten pitches to do it. Mason Melotakis returned from the disabled list to pitch the eighth inning. He gave up two hits and issued a walk but he struck out three batters to get through the inning without allowing a run. Raul Fernandez got the ninth inning. He gave up a run but recorded his fifth save. The Lookouts had just five hits in the game, but they were big ones. Edgar Corcino got the team on the board with a two-run triple. It was his fifth triple for the team. Travis Harrison provided some insurance with his seventh home run. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 0, Jupiter 3 Box Score Sam Clay was on the mound for the Miracle. The left-hander gave up three runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out six batters. Luke Westphal, Michael Theofanopoulos and Confesor Lara each threw a scoreless inning. “Theo” struck out three, and Lara struck out two. The Miracle had just five hits on the game. Their top four hitters combined to go 0-15. Brad Hartong went 2-3 in the game. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 7, Clinton 2 Box Score The Kernels are fast-approaching clinching a playoff spot in the Midwest League. On Saturday night in Clinton, they inched closer thanks to a strong start from Sam Gibbons. The Australian right-hander gave up just two runs on nine hits over six innings to record his seventh win. He struck out two without issuing a walk. Michael Cederoth walked two and struck out two in two scoreless innings. Anthony McIver gave up a hit, but he got the final three outs to preserve the win. Brandon Lopez went 3-4 with his first two MWL doubles. He was also hit by a pitch. Luis Arraez went 3-4 with a walk. He hit his 29th and 30th doubles, drove in two runs and stole his third bag and raised his average to .351. Travis Blankenhorn also had three hits in five at-bats. He had a triple and two RBI. Zander Wiel went 2-5 with two RBI. E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton 1, Greeneville 0 Box Score The two teams combined for just seven hits in this game. Caleb Hamilton, who walked twice, scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ariel Montesino.The E-Twins had just four hits overall. Tyler Wells, who struck out 14 in seven shutout innings his last outing, threw six shutout innings in this game. He gave up two hits, walked two, hit one and struck out three. He improved to 5-2 on the season. Colton Davis returned to the mound after not pitching for nearly a month. He struck out two in two scoreless innings. He gave up one hit and walked one. Patrick McGuff came on for the ninth and recorded his ninth save. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Twins 1, GCL Red Sox 4 Box Score Taylor Clemensia started for the Twins and went just 1.2 innings. He gave up three unearned runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out one. He really struggled to find the strike zone. Moises Gomez came on in relief and worked the final 6.1 innings. He gave up just one run on four hits. He struck out two without issuing a walk. His season ERA actually went up to 0.83 in 32.2 innings. Aaron Whitefield again led the way. He went 2-2 and stole his 29th and 30th bases of the season. He also threw two runners out from the outfield. In the second, he left the game with a sore non-throwing neck/shoulder (per Bob Sacamento). The Twins had just five hits in the game. How many doubleheaders can be played in one day? The Twins farm system tried their best to maximize the answer to this question on Tuesday. There were a trio of doubleheaders up and down the Twins system on Tuesday. The Miracle, Kernels, and DSL Twins all had to make up from some weather issues in the last month. This led to a jam-packed Monday schedule with plenty of chances for players to shine. Chattanooga had a scheduled day off and the GCL Twins were postponed but all the other teams were in action. Which players would stand out above the crowd? Read on to find out.RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 0, Buffalo 3 Box Score For his third straight start, Nick Greenwood pitched at least seven innings and allowed three runs or fewer. On Monday night he tossed seven innings while scattering seven hits. He struck out three and walked three but left the mound trailing 2-0. Neil Ramirez came on in relief and allowed a solo home run during his inning of work. Unfortunately, the Rochester offense couldn't get going in this one. The team combined for five hits, went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, and left six men on base. Adam Brett Walker collected two of the team's six hits but he also struck out twice. Daniel Palka added his 12th double, the team's lone extra-base knock. Mitch Garver reached base twice and is hitting .375 since being promoted. Byron Buxton was 0-for-4 out of the leadoff spot. The loss drops the Red Wings to 68-56 on the season as they sit nine games out of first place in the International League North. Luckily, Rochester finds themselves 4.5 games behind Lehigh Valley for the wild card spot with 19 games to play. This includes what could be a pivotal four-game home-and-home series to end the regular season against Lehigh Valley. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 1, St. Lucie 0 (Game 1- 8 Innings) Box Score In what was scheduled to be a seven-inning contest, the pitching staffs for both teams combined to put up zeros until the eighth frame. Christian Ibarra singled to lead-off the inning and was immediately replaced with pinch runner Sean Miller. With Nick Gordon batting, Miller advanced to second on a wild pitch. Gordon was able advance Miller to third on a deep fly to left. Joe Maloney brought home Miller on a ground ball single. Maloney finished the game 2-for-4 with the only RBI for either team. Alex Perez picked up a pair of hits in three trips to the plate. Nick Gordon and Christian Ibarra both finished 1-for-4. Overall, the team went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Sam Clay had orginally started this resumed game and made it through one inning. He walked two and didn't allow an earned run. Luke Westphal and Michael Theofanopoulos each pitched 3.1 scoreless innings while combining to strike out seven. Todd Van Steensel picked up his third win after recording the final out of the eighth inning. Fort Myers 6, St. Lucie 8 (Game 2) Box Score Game two started off worse for Fort Myers as they saw St. Lucie jump out to an 8-1 lead by the end of the third. Joe Maloney had spotted the Miracle an early 1-0 lead on his third home run. In the fifth inning, Fort Myers tried to crawl back into the contest. Alex Perez walked in front of a Trey Vavra single. Following a double play, Tanner English slashed a triple to score Perez. Sean Miller drove in English with a double. Things got even more interesting in the final frame. After back-to-back singles from Brad Hartong and Daniel Kihle, Christian Ibarra hit a three-run blast to cut the lead to 8-6. The comeback attempt ended there as the next two batters failed to reach base. Randy LeBlanc started and was charged with eight earned runs on 10 hits. He struck out one and walked two. Cam Booser tossed three shutout frames while striking out six. It was the first time all season Booser pitched more than two innings and the six strikeouts tied a career high. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 1, Peoria 10 (Game 1- 7 Innings) Box Score Sam Gibbons was roughed up in this one for seven earned runs in less than five innings of work. The Chiefs pounded out four first inning runs on the way to the blowout win. Gibbons walked two and struck out two as he was charged with his first loss since May 5. Max Cordy allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in relief. Luis Arraez was the lone batter to record multiple hits as he finished 2-for-3. Travis Blakenhorn picked up his third double since being promoted and he scored the team's only run. J.J. Fernandez finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. On the defensive side of the ball, Zander Wiel was charged with his 15th error at first base. Cedar Rapids 7, Peoria 2 (Game 2- 7 Innings) Box Score Cedar Rapids didn't want a nail-biter in game two as they pounded out seven runs on ten hits. Travis Blankenhorn hit his first Low-A home run, a two-run shot to give the Kernels a 2-1 lead. In the fifth inning, Cedar Rapids pushed across four runs with the biggest hit being a two-run triple by Zander Wiel. He finished the game 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and two runs scored. Blankenhorn and Jaylin Davis both picked up two hits and combined for four RBI. Brady Anderson pitched six strong innings by allowing one run on four hits. He struck out four and walked one. In four of his last five starts, he has pitched six innings and allowed one run or fewer. Williams Ramirez ran into a little trouble in the final frame as he walked a couple of batters with two outs but it wasn't nearly enough E-TOWN E-NOTES Elizabethton 7, Johnson City 17 Box Score The E-Twins found themselves in the middle of quite the slugfest but they didn't have nearly enough firepower on this night. Johnson City pounded out 17 runs on 21 hits with all but one batter in their line-up reaching base multiple times. Ryan Mason started and was charged with seven earned runs on nine hits. He struck out two and walked one. Quin Grogan allowed five runs in his three innings with a pair of strikeouts. Austin Tribby closed things out as he allowed five runs in the final two frames. Lewin Diaz collected his eighth home run, a three-run shot in the third inning. This kept the game closer at the time. Ariel Montesino scored a pair of runs out of the lead-off spot and hit his third double. Caleb Hamilton drove in two runs as part of a multi-hit night. Alex Kirilloff went 0-for-5 but managed to score a run. The E-Twins might have been looking forward to Wednesday's day off a little early as the club will have to recover from this lopsided affair. Happy Father’s Day across Twins territory, including Rochester, NY; Chattanooga, TN; Fort Myers, FL; and Cedar Rapids, IA! If you were out at a ballpark today, I hope you stayed hydrated! There were three games in the minor leagues on Sunday afternoon, with those teams looking to bring home a victory just like their parent club did against the Yankees. One team got most of their offense in just one inning, while the other two teams scored first and tried to hold on. Did any of them do enough to send their fans home happy? Let’s check out all the action from Sunday, and find out!RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 8, Toledo 5 Box Score Rochester used a big inning to take down the Toledo Mud Hens on Sunday, scoring seven of their eight runs in the sixth inning when they sent eleven men to the plate. Adam Walker led off the inning by reaching base on an error, moved to third on a John Ryan Murphy double, and scored their first run of the inning when James Beresford drove him in with a single. Logan Schafer followed with an RBI single and then both Toledo’s starting pitcher and manager were ejected. Jorge Polanco (1B), Eddie Rosario (sac fly), Tommy Field (2B), and Wilfredo Tovar (2B) all contributed RBI hits afterward, and the Red Wings took the lead 7-1. Nick Greenwood made the start for Rochester, his first AAA start of the year, and worked the first five innings. He allowed one run on four hits and a walk, and struck out two. In his five innings, Greenwood threw just fifty-eight pitches. Dan Runzler was the first man up from the bullpen for the bottom of the sixth, and the Mud Hens got three of those runs back off of him. He struck out the first man he faced, but a single and three walks scored one before Sean Burnett came on, with Runzler responsible for all men on base. Burnett got a ground ball and force at home for the second out, but a single to the next batter scored two more to make it 7-4. Burnett stayed in the game and pitched a one-two-three seventh inning before giving way to Alex Wimmers in the eighth. The Mud Hens John Hicks led off the inning with a double, and two ground ball outs would allow him to score, closing the gap to 7-5. The Red Wings got one back in the top of ninth, as Polanco brought in Beresford with a sac fly, but Wimmers finished off the victory with a scoreless bottom frame for his sixth save. Rochester improves their record to 42-28 on the year, and in the month of June has gone 13-5. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 3, Montgomery 5 Box Score The Lookouts jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a Daniel Palka sac fly to score Zach Granite from third, who had singled to lead off the game. Still in the first, they threatened to score another run, but Engelb Vielma was thrown out at home on a ground ball off the bat of Travis Harrison. Chattanooga’s starter Kohl Stewart gave that run back in the bottom of the first after recording two quick outs. A single and wild pitch followed by a bloop single tied the game at one. The Biscuits made it 2-1 in the second as a walk was followed by an RBI double, and two doubles in the third made it 3-1. The Biscuits would never look back. All told, Stewart finished four and one third innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks. He struck out two and raised his ERA to 4.82 in four starts at AA. Mitch Garver closed the gap to 5-3 in the sixth inning, as his fifth home run of the year was a two-run shot to left field, but they would be shut out the rest of the way. Granite and Leonardo Reginatto each had two hits on the day. In addition to his RBI, Palka also stole his fifth base of the year. The bullpen duo of Corey Williams and Raul Fernandez finished the game without allowing a run. Williams walk two and gave up one hit in 1.2 innings, striking out one. Fernandez allowed a hit and a walk in his two innings. The Lookouts finish the first half of their season with a 36-34 record and second place in the North Division, ten games out of first place behind the Jackson Generals. They will have to win the division in the second half (or finish second to Jackson again) to find their way into the postseason. MIRACLE MATTERS The Miracle, along with the rest of the Florida State League, enjoyed Sunday afternoon off after their All-Star Game in Fort Myers yesterday. They are back in action on Monday night at home against the Charlotte Stone Crabs to kick off the second half of the FSL season. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 3, Quad Cities 4 Box Score The Kernels had the first lead in the game, as a walk from Daniel Kihle was followed by consecutive singles from Luis Arraez and Sean Miller in the top of the third inning. They also lost that lead in the bottom half of the frame, as starter Sam Clay was unable to finish the inning. He allowed a leadoff single, walk, and an RBI single while recording only one out before manager Jake Mauer went to the bullpen. Sam Gibbons came on and gave up a run on a wild pitch to his first batter, but escaped the inning with no further damage. Gibbons went on to pitch a scoreless fourth inning, but ran into trouble himself in the fifth. A single and three doubles added to the River Bandits lead, making it 4-1. An error, balk, and fly out put Sean Miller on third in the sixth, and a double off the bat of Zander Wiel brought him in to close it to 4-2. Anthony McIver pitched the final two innings for Cedar Rapids, retiring every batter he faced, including two strikeouts, to give the Kernels offense a chance. In the ninth, Chris Ibarra drew a walk and was moved to third on a J.J. Fernandez single to put the tying runs on base. Kihle brought in Ibarra with a ground ball out, but Fernandez was stranded on second to end the game. Arreaz was the only hitter with multiple hits, including a double. As a team the Kernels were just 1-11 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. They finish the first half of the Midwest League season with a 36-22 record, finishing third in the Western Division, 2.5 games out of a clinching a playoff spot. Cedar Rapids will play host to the Midwest League All-Star Game on Tuesday night at 7:05PM CST. Tyler Duffey was pretty good for the Twins again on Sunday afternoon as the parent club won their second straight game against the Cleveland Indians. In the minors on Sunday, one game was postponed, a lefty top prospect took to the mound in Florida, was outdone by a lefty newcomer to the system in another game, and one team struggled to collect any hits for most of the day, even though they took the no-hitter off the table early. To find out who did what and where on Sunday, read on!RED WINGS REPORT Syracuse @ Rochester - Postponed The Red Wings game on Sunday afternoon was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on June 30th. Rochester finished their recent homestand with a 5-1 record and begins a seven-game road trip tomorrow night in Charlotte. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Biloxi 1, Chattanooga 2 Box Score There was little offense to be had for either team in this one, as both starting pitchers put in solid efforts. For the Shuckers, it was Jorge Ortega who held Chattanooga scoreless into the seventh inning, and for the Lookouts it was Nick Greenwood who limited Biloxi’s scoring chances for nearly the entire game. Biloxi got on the board first in the third inning after a one-out double put a runner in scoring position who was later driven in from third on a ground out. But that would be it for the Shuckers as Greenwood allowed only three more hits over the next five innings. On the game he went eight innings, allowing just the one run on six hits and no walks, while striking out three. The Lookouts were able to tie the game at one in the sixth when Daniel Palka and Travis Harrison clubbed back-to-back doubles with two outs. In the seventh inning Chattanooga took the lead after Ryan Walker’s one-out triple chased Ortega from the game. Walker scored on a Joe Maloney single that against the Shucker’s bullpen. In the ninth, it was Omar Bencomo who was summoned for his first save opportunity of the year. Although he allowed two singles, he finished the game and picked up the save by picking off one of the runners at first and inducing two easy ground balls around them. Chattanooga was outhit 8-5 on the day, but cashed in on two of their four opportunities with runners in scoring position to pull out the victory. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 7, St. Lucie 1 Box Score Early season stud left-hander Stephen Gonsalves took the mound for the Miracle on Sunday, and although he didn’t necessarily dominate as he had in other starts, he still picked up the win to improve to 5-1 on the season. He finished 5.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits and a walk. He struck out three and if not for a Nick Gordon error in the sixth, may have been able to finish that inning. With one out and two men on base he was lifted for Brian Gilbert who induced an inning- ending double play. Fort Myers took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning on home runs from Austin Diemer (solo) and Trey Vavra (three run), and extended that lead to 6-1 in the fourth after a Chad Christensen double, an Alex Real single, and a Diemer sac fly plated two more. Max Murphy added the seventh run in the eighth inning with a solo home run. Gilbert finished a scoreless seventh inning as well and allowed only one hit in his 1.2 innings. Todd Van Steensel pitched the final two frames and allowed just one hit. The Miracle offense got multi-hit efforts from Gordon (2-4, R), Vavra (2-4, R, HR, 3 RBI, SB), Christensen (2-4, R, 2B), and Diemer (3-3, R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI). Murphy scored two runs and walked once in addition to his fourth home run of the season. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 1, Wisconsin 7 Box Score Cedar Rapids scored first in this one, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning after a walk to Daniel Kihle and an error put him on third base, where he easily scampered home on a ground out from Sean Miller, but that would be it for the Kernels for the day as they managed just one hit the entire game against Wisconsin pitchers. The Timber Rattlers took the lead for good in the bottom of the second after three singles and a double steal (of second and home) put them up 2-1. Miles Nordgren made the start for the Kernels, and went just five innings. He allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks, but did strike out eight. Anthony McIver pitched the sixth inning, and allowed two runs on three hits and two walks, including a home run to his first batter. Nick Anderson calmed the storm for the final two innings, going one-two-three in both, along with four strikeouts. Over his last six appearances, Anderson has pitched ten innings and allowed just one hit and one walk to opposing batters, while striking out eighteen of them. Quite a nice little stretch for the 2015 free agent out of the independent leagues. As can be imagined when you only tally one hit as a team, Cedar Rapids had few opportunities for more runs in this game, despite getting six walks. They were 0-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. The hit came off the bat of Zander Wiel in the first inning.
