The Twins bullpen left all of their scoreless appearances in Puerto Rico. One former first-round pick flourishes while another struggled badly. Not a lot of great news to share… except that it hit 60 degrees in the Midwest, so no more games snowed out! (Hopefully.) Keep reading to find out much more on the night in the Twins minor league system.TRANSACTIONS There was two transactions announced on Saturday by the affiliates. The Kernels sent pitcher Calvin Faucher to Fort Myers. Faucher made two relief appearances in Cedar Rapids. To fill his role, pitcher Carlos Suniaga was sent north from Fort Myers, where he appeared twice in relief. Rochester placed outfielder Zack Granite on the disabled list with a right shoulder contusion. Their roster remains two below the maximum (though the Twins optioned Gabriel Moya after Saturday’s game and he will join the Red Wings at some point soon). RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 3, Columbus 4 (10 innings) Box Score Rochester drops to 5-6 with Saturday’s extra-innings loss. The new rule - where teams start each inning with a runner on second base - helped Columbus score a run in the top of the 10th, where they had two singles but also grounded into a double-play. The Red Wings started their half of the 10th with the same luxury, but struck out twice to end their threat. They ended their game with six strikeouts in their last seven outs. Columbus jumped out a two-run lead after scoring a single run in both the second and third inning. Rochester got on the board in the bottom half of the third inning when Leo Reginatto doubled in Nick Buss. After Columbus pushed the lead back to two runs, Rochester rallied in the eighth inning. After a Gregorio Petit single, Buss reached on an error, moving Petit to third base. Back-to-back singles by Reginatto and Jake Cave each drove in a run, tying the game. Aaron Slegers made a quality start, allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out four. Nick Anderson pitched a scoreless pair of innings, striking out three. Mason Melotakis took the loss. The winning run is an unearned run, as it was the runner who started the inning on base. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 2, Jackson 13 Box Score Kohl Stewart was the story of the game… and not in a good way. Entering the game at 2-0 with a 3.48 ERA and a 14/1 K/BB ratio in 10 1/3 innings, many fans were hoping that Stewart had turned a corner. On Saturday, he turned the wrong corner. Recording only five outs, Stewart gave up six hits and a walk, resulting in seven runs (six earned). He struck out one, committed an error and took the loss. Todd Van Steensel and Zack Jones limited the damage, splitting the next 4 ⅓ scoreless innings, combining to strike out seven. Omar Bencomo finished the game, pitching two innings, allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks. He struck out two. The lineup didn’t do much to help, but neither did the defense. Besides Stewart error, there were four other fielding errors committed (Rooker, Corcino, Miller 2). Brent Rooker doubled in a two-hit performance. Zander Wiel also doubled and is hitting .396 on the young season. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 3, Bradenton 5 Box Score Fort Myers gave up two early game runs and despite tying the game in the sixth, couldn’t complete the comeback. The Miracle lineup provided nine hits, including three from Aaron Whitefield. Whitefield didn’t start the game, replacing Jaylin Davis in the fourth inning. Davis doubled in the second. No word on Davis’s status post-game. Jimmy Kerrigan had two more hits - both doubles - and is batting .407. Brady Anderson pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He struck out one and served up one long ball. Hector Lujan took the loss, also giving up a home run, but he also was credited with two unearned runs due to a pair of Joseph Cronin errors. He struck out two. Ryan Mason pitched a perfect final frame, striking out one. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 2, Kane County 9 Box Score Despite jumping to an early lead, Kane County mounted a comeback thanks mostly to a seven-run seventh inning. Royce Lewis was 4-for-4 and is now batting .323. Jose Miranda added two hits. Alex Kirilloff had the team’s lone RBI. Lewis scored the team’s only two runs. The Kernels went hit hitless in seven at-bats with runners in scoring position. Nick Brown pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and striking out four. Brown walked one. Derek Molina gave up two runs in 2/3 of an inning. Jose Martinez took the loss. He recorded four outs, giving up seven runs (five earned) on four hits and two walks. It was Martinez’s second game in a row allowing three or more runs. Jared Finkel had a one-hit appearance, pitching the last 2 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Montgomery 3 @ Chattanooga 2 Box Score Chattanooga gave up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, starting the game with three consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly to plate two runs. After a bumpy first inning, Lookouts starter Dereck Rodriguez settled down and went deep into the game. He gave up no more runs after the two in the first, went 7.0 innings, struck out seven, and walked no one. He was lifted for Cody Stashak, who gave up a run in the top of the eighth, which ended up being the difference maker. After they fell behind early, the Lookouts battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, before Stashak coughed up the lead an inning later. The Lookouts were led by Max Murpy, 2-4 with an RBI double and T.J. White, who launched a solo home run to tie the game in the seventh. The bottom of the Lookouts order really struggled on Thursday night, a combined 0-9 for the 7-8-9 hitters. The Lookouts had opportunities, but were 0-8 with runners in scoring position, stranding all eight of those runners. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 7 @ Kane County 3 Box Score A big fourth inning led the Kernels back to the Western Division Championship Series for the fourth straight year. The Kernels scored six runs in the fourth, erasing an early two-run deficit, topped by a Trey Cabbage three-run homer, his only hit on a 1-2 night that included a walk. Jimmy Kerrigan had a big night at the plate as well, 3-5 with a pair of runs scored. Manager Tommy Watkins acknowledged to Kernels beat reporter Jeff Johnson that they found a tip in the Cougars pitcher. "“You know what, we got a hit and got him in the stretch. We had something on him, and it was more out of the stretch than in the windup." Read Jeff's story in its entirety here. Clark Beeker went 7.0 innings, scattered nine hits and gave up three runs (two earned) while walking three and striking out six. He was lifted for Colton Davis who gave the team 1.2 innings of two-hit baseball before Hector Lujan came in to get the final out of the game against the only batter he faced to preserve the win. The Kernels will await the winner of the Peoria and Quad Cities deciding Game 3 on Thursday night, and will begin the Championship Series on the road on Saturday. E-Twins E-Notes Pulaski 1 @ Elizabethton 12 Box Score In the first game of the Championship Series, the Twins let Pulaski know they were ready to get down to business, blasting the Yankees 12-1. The Twins were led by J.J. Robinson, 3-4 with two RBIs and T.J. Dixon, 3-3 with a double, a home run, a walk and three runs scored! Nick Brown earned the win with 6.0 innings of one-run baseball. He gave up five hits, walked three, and struck out three. Ryley Widell gave the Twins 2.0 innings of scoreless baseball, and recorded five of his six outs via the strikeout, but he also walked a pair of guys and gave up three hits. Jose Martinez finished the game with 1.0 inning, he gave up just one hit, no runs, no walks, no strike outs. Twins Minor League Report (8/21): Wells, Lewis, Lujan Key Kernels Win
Seth Stohs posted an article in Minors
Let’s start with the transactions of the day: The Twins made a couple of moves official on Monday before their first game in Chicago. Miguel Sano was placed on the disabled list, and Kenny Vargas was called back up. Tim Melville was added to the 40- and 25-man rosters. Nik Turley was optioned. He pitched for the Twins on Monday as their 26th man before returning to the Red Wings following the game. . Yohan Pino was again transferred from Chattanooga to Rochester. Buddy Boshers arrived and is now on the Red Wings roster. It seemed strange when Kohl Stewart was demoted from Rochester to Ft. Myers after picking up a win in his one start for the Red Wings. The next day, Lewis Thorpe picked up a win in his first start in Chattanooga. On Monday, it all made much more sense as Stewart was promoted back to the Lookouts with Thorpe returning to the Miracle. Tyler Wells was called back up to the Cedar Rapids Kernels. To make room, Evan Sanders was placed on the DL. RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 3, Scranton/Wilkes Barre 4 Box Score David Hurlbut started and gave up two runs over the first five innings. He gave up eight hits, walked four and struck out four. Yohan Pino came in and gave up two runs on four hits and a walk over the next three innings; both runs scored four batters into his outing before he settled in. John Curtiss walked one and struck out two over a scoreless inning. Byungho Park provided much of the offense. He went 2-4 with his 12th home run. Daniel Palka went 1-3 with a walk, and Leonardo Reginnato walked twice. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 3, Mississippi 2 Box Score He didn’t pick up a win, but Zack Littell put together a quality start. The right-hander gave up one run on two hits over six innings. He walked four and struck out six. Ryan Eades got the win. He gave up one run on one hit and three walks in two innings. He struck out two. Nick Anderson recorded his eighth save. He gave up one hit in a scoreless inning and struck out two. There wasn’t a ton of offense, but down 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, the Lookouts scored two. Singles by Edgar Corcino and LaMonte Wade set things up. Jonathan Rodriguez grounded into a fielder’s choice which scored Corcino to tie the game. TJ White then hit his second triple of the season to score Rodriguez with the go-ahead run. Corcino went 2-3. Wade added a sacrifice fly for the team’s first run MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers Box Score No game scheduled for the Miracle. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 5, Beloit 4 Box Score A nice start. A huge homer. A nerve-wracking ninth. But the Kernels found a way to keep the lead and get a win to give them a sweep of the Snappers. Tyler Wells returned to the Kernels after spending time rehabbing and working in the GCL. The right-hander was in fine form. In 6.1 innings, he was charged with two runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out four. Wells told Twins Daily following the game, “It was awesome to be back. I missed the fans and the atmosphere playing here! And everything felt great. No problems at all. Honestly, I had to take some pointers out of (Clark) Beeker’s book, and really spot up. Outside fastball was great for quick outs. The curveball got the guys frozen, and the slider was working really well. Stoked to come back and help try and get a ring here!” Eduardo Del Rosario came on and got the next five outs, giving up just one hit. The Kernels went into the ninth with a three-run lead. Colton Davis came on for the save attempt, but it didn’t go well. He walked the leadoff batter which was followed by a single. After an error leaded the bases, Davis walked in a run. With a 5-3 lead, the bases still loaded and nobody out, Tommy Watkins summoned Kernels closer Hector Lujan. Lujan noted, “Well, once Tommy came out of the dugout to bring me in, I just kept telling myself… trust yourself, throw strikes and get a ground ball. Let your defense work and do whatever you can to help your team win and get out of this.” A seeing-eye single made it a one-run game. Lujan then got a fly out to short left field, but the runner did not attempt to score. Bases still loaded. Next, Lujan got a grounder back to himself. He fielded, threw home, getting the runner from third and Ben Rortvedt completed the double play, throwing the batter out at first, to end the game. Just like the PFT (pitcher’s fielding practice) that they work on extensively in spring training and more throughout the year. “I just felt that knowing the situation I was in, I knew I would just have to relax and let the ball come to me and execute a good throw to Ben at the plate to be able to get a double play out of it. You just never know when you're going to get a play like that you just always have to be ready for it or any sort of play.” The Kernels got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning. For the second time this season, Travis Blankenhorn stole home. This time, he stole on the back end of an Aaron Whitefield steal of second. With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, 18-year-old Royce Lewis stepped to the plate with two on and two out. He worked the count before hitting a line drive that cleared the wall in left-center field and gave the Kernels a 4-1 cushion that they were able to hold on to. https://twitter.com/MiaOBrienCBS2/status/899709203253796865 Blankenhorn went 2-4. Joe Cronin went 2-3 and scored two of the team’s runs. E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton 8, Johnson City 1 Box Score I don’t know if the E-Twins bats really showed up, but their batter’s eyes sure did. The Twins scored eight runs on just four hits, but they were helped out with 12 walks on their way to an easy win. Nick Brown was the recipient of the run support, but he also put together his best start. He gave up one run on four hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out six. Jared Finkel picked up his second save with three shutout innings with just one hit allowed. He struck out two. Andrew Bechtold went 2-2 with a walk and a sacrifice fly. Wander Javier had a single and walked three times. Colton Waltner walked three times, and Jose Miranda walked twice. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Twins 8, GCL Orioles 1 Box Score Down 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Twins scored four, then two and then two more to take a commanding lead and win in this game. Jean Carlos Arias went 2-3 with two walks. Alex Robles went 2-4. Shane Kennedy went 1-2 with a walk and a double. Emmanuel Morel was 1-3 with two walks. He added his 12th stolen base. Victor Tademo walked twice. He stole his fifth bag. Lefty Matt Jones made the start and gave up on run over 3.1 innings. He gave up three hits, walked three and struck out two. Jose Rosenstein gave up two hits and walked three but did not give up a run in his three innings of work. Zach Featherstone got the final two outs of the seventh inning. Derek Molina struck out three over the final two innings. The Twins played two games on Monday, and all of the Twins affiliates except Ft. Myers had games as well. The Red Wings and Lookouts played one-run games. Cedar Rapids got a big blast from a top prospect, though things got interesting and also ended in a one-run final score. The E-Twins didn’t have many hits and still won easily… How? The GCL Twins won by the same score… It was a busy day of transactions and game stories, and we have several quotes from Cedar Rapids, so check it out.Let’s start with the transactions of the day: The Twins made a couple of moves official on Monday before their first game in Chicago. To find out how all those extra innings finished on the night, keep reading! TRANSACTIONS The Twins made a couple of moves in the system on Tuesday as well. They recalled Dillon Gee to the majors and assigned Dietrich Enns to Rochester. Zack Littell was assigned to the Lookouts and made the start. To make the room at AA Randy LeBlanc was sent back to Fort Myers and David Fischer was released. RED WINGS REPORT Lehigh Valley 3, Rochester 1 Box Score With Dillon Gee on his way to the Twins, the Red Wings ended up with a bullpen game against IronPigs on Tuesday night. D.J. Baxendale started and pitched the first three innings. He allowed two hits including a solo home run and struck out three. Alex Wimmers added two perfect innings before he ran into trouble in his third. He got two outs but ended up with two earned runs on two hits in 2.2 innings. He struck out two. Mason Melotakis allowed an inherited runner to score in the sixth and got the first two outs in the seventh before he was replaced by Michael Tonkin. Tonkin allowed just one hit in his 2.1 innings to finish the game, while striking out three. Rochester’s lone run came in the bottom of the first inning, as a throwing error on a Byungho Park single allowed Matt Hague to score. They would collect only one more hit the entire game (a Mitch Garver single) so not much to recap on the offensive side. Park also drew a walk in a 1-3 night and is hitting .324/.368/.577 in nineteen games since the Triple-A All-Star Game. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 5, Montgomery 6 (10 innings) Box Score The story in this one for a lot of Twins fans may have been that one of the new prospect additions they received from the Yankees started the game for the Lookouts. It wasn’t one of Zack Littell’s best games this year, but he did finish six innings in his organizational debut. The first inning was a rough one for him as a couple of hits, a walk, an error, and a balk led to an early 3-0 lead for the Biscuits of Montgomery. It was a good thing for Littell though, that Chattanooga is the best team in the Southern League. They took the lead right back for him in the top of the second with a four-spot. T.J. White led off the inning with a homer, and then Travis Harrison, Nick Gordon, and Levi Michael each had run-scoring singles (Gordon’s included a fielding error, so no RBI for him). Littell settled in from there with three scoreless frames, though he did hit a couple of batters and walked three. In the fifth, an RBI ground out accounted for his fourth run allowed of the evening. Overall in six innings, Little allowed those four runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out six. The Lookouts were facing off against #OldFriend Logan Darnell, and although they knocked him around for twelve hits in five innings, the four runs in the second were all they were able to get as he played Houdini in every other frame. Randy Rosario came on in relief of Littell and pitched two innings. He allowed one run on two hits and it was 5-4 biscuits going into the ninth inning. You know how this is going to go, right? With two outs and Max Murphy on first base, Carlos Paulino delivered the game- tying hit with a double to right field to drive him in and tie it at five. Luke Bard pitched a one-two-three ninth and Chattanooga was looking at their third extra- inning game in their last four. The Lookouts threatened in the top of the tenth, but with Gordon on third base Montgomery elected to intentionally walk Jonathan Rodriguez (wise), and then escaped. Bard then got himself into trouble he couldn’t escape in the bottom half, as a two-out double put the winning run across for the Biscuits. The two through seven hitters in the Chattanooga lineup amassed fourteen hits on the game and as a team outhit Montgomery 16-9, but going just 4-17 with runners in scoring position and leaving fourteen men on base means you left a lot ducks on the pond. The Lookouts lead the Biscuits in the North Division standings by six games after this one. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 6, Clearwater 4 Box Score Fort Myers battled back in this one to steal the game late thanks to a big two-out hit from Jaylin Davis. Starter Eduardo Del Rosario went the first six innings for the Miracle, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out six. The biggest problem with that line, is the three home runs he allowed. Alex Robinson walked one and struck out two in one inning of relief work and thanks to his offense, picked up his second win of the season. Down 4-2 in the top of the eighth, Sean Miller started the rally for Fort Myers with a single to lead off the inning. Zander Wiel moved him to third on a single of his own, and Jermaine Palacios put down a squeeze bunt that scored the first run of the inning. After strikeouts from Brandon Lopez and Brent Rooker, a walk to Kevin Garcia brought Davis to the plate. With the count a 1-0, Davis lined a single into center field to score two and put the Miracle out front 5-4. Sam Clay pitched a scoreless bottom of the inning, and Fort Myers added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Tanner English singled, stole second base (his 23rd steal) and got to third on a throwing error before Palacios drove him in with a triple. Clay came back out for the ninth, and worked around a leadoff single to secure his ninth save of the year (he’s also 8-0), striking out the final hitter of the game. Miller (2-5, R) and Palacios (3-4, 2 R’s, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, SB) had multiple hits to lead the offense. Zander Wiel scored two runs with a single and a walk in five trips to the plate. Lopez (0-4) and Davis (1-3) each drove in two. KERNELS NUGGETS Clinton 7, Cedar Rapids 8 (11 innings) Box Score The Kernels jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three thanks to home runs from Christian Cavaness and Caleb Hamilton in the first inning, and a two-run double from Travis Blankenhorn in the third. They extended their lead to 6-1 in the sixth when Cavaness clubbed an RBI double. But after that the game turned for the LumberKings. Cedar Rapids starter Tyler Beardsley had been cruising for the first six innings. He had allowed just one run on three hits and two walks to that point while striking out four. Two singles and a double scored two and ended his night in the seventh with two outs. Overall, Beardsley went 6.2 innings with three earned runs of six hits and two walks, with five K’s. Colton Davis came on and got the final out in the seventh, but a bases clearing double with two outs in the eighth tied the game at six. Hector Lujan came out for the ninth and Clinton took the lead after a leadoff walk and error was followed by a run-scoring double. The Kernels weren’t ready for the game to end yet though, and mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning after the first two hitters to bat went down on strikes. Jimmy Kerrigan got an infield single, stole second base, and then Blankenhorn delivered a big triple to tie it, but was stranded as Lewin Diaz grounded out to send it into extras. Max Cordy came in from the bullpen for the tenth, and allowed a hit but no runs. Same in the eleventh to get his team up to bat again. They didn’t need another extra frame. Joe Cronin led off with a double, moved to third on a sac bunt/throwing error play, and scampered home on a passed ball for the not-so-dramatic walk-off victory. The top four hitters in the Kernels lineup led the way, with Cavaness (3-5, 2 R’s, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, BB), Kerrigan (2-6, 2 R’s), Blankenhorn (3-5, R 2 2B’s, 3B, 3 RBI), and Diaz (2-5) collecting multiple hits. Hamilton drove in two and Cronin scored two runs. E-TWINS E-NOTES Kingsport 4, Elizabethton 5 Box Score Elizabethton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after Wander Javier led off with his ninth double of the season, and later scored on a single from J.J. Robinson. They had runners on second and third with one out later in the frame, but were unable to add any more runs. The opportunity missed would come back to haunt them. Twins starter Nick Brown began the game with four scoreless innings, including retiring eight in a row at one point, but the Mets finally got to him in the top of fifth thanks to an error that was followed by an RBI double. Brown would finish 5.2 innings, allowing just that unearned run on six hits while striking out six. The offense for Elizabethton got that run back and one more in the bottom of the fifth as Akil Baddoo drove in a run with a double, and later scored on a single from Jose Miranda to put them in front 3-1. Juan Gamez replaced Brown in the sixth and got out of the inning, and added a scoreless seventh. He got two outs in the eighth and was replaced by Jose Martinez with a runner on third, who scored on a double to Martinez’s first hitter. Another RBI double and an RBI single followed to put Kingsport in front 4-3. Martinez worked through a single to the leadoff man in the ninth to keep the Twins in striking distance in the bottom half. And strike they did. Colton Waltner led off the inning with a walk and Mark Contreras followed with a single to put the tying run in scoring position. A sacrifice bunt from Rainis Silva put the winning run in the same position. T.J. Dixon tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field, and Ariel Montesino ended with a two-out single. Martinez ended up with a blown save and win (4-0) in the score book. Javier (2-4, R, 2B) and Montesino (2-4, R, RBI) had multiple hits on the game to lead the offense, but everyone else except Silva contributed with a run scored or an RBI. Silva’s bunt however, was likely most important play in the game (if you like bunts), so it really was a team effort in the walk-off win. GCL TWINS TAKES Game 1: GCL Rays 3, GCL Twins 5 Box Score In the regularly scheduled game of the day, the Twins saw the first in-game action from their 2017 2nd round draft pick, Landon Leach. Although he likely had some nerves and wasn’t great, you have to remember he’s going to be eased into action at this point. He walked his first batter (just like Blayne Enlow) and uncorked a couple of off target pitches that put that runner on third, before picking up his first strikeout as a pro. He then got a ground out that scored the runner and issued another walk before he was removed the game. So just two outs in his debut, but it means literally nothing at this point. Pedro Garcia came into the game to get the final out of the first and went the next five innings in total including four scoreless. He got two outs in the sixth before leaving with the bases loaded. Overall Garcia allowed one run on four walks and one hit, and struck out four. Joe Rosenstein came on and struck out the batter he faced, but on a wild-pitch so that’s how Garcia’s run scored. Rosenstein gave up one run of his own in the seventh and gave up one hit, walked one, and struck out one in 1.1 innings while picking up his first save. The Twins early offense came courtesy of an Alex Robles RBI single in the first and a Benjamin Rodriguez RBI double in the third before they tacked on three more in the fourth for a 5-1 lead. Victor Tademo led off the inning with a solo home run, and later in the inning a Jean Carlos Arias single brought in two. Emmanuel Morel was 2-3 with a double, walk, and three runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Kerby Camacho added a double. Garcia improved to 5-1 in the GCL season. Game 2: GCL Twins 0, GCL Rays 2 Box Score In the makeup game of yesterday’s rainout, the teams combined for just seven hits between them. Unfortunately for the Twins the Rays were the only ones to get any extra-base hits, and they came in the form of back-to-back-to-back doubles in the fifth inning that scored the two runs for the Rays. Derek Molina made the start and went two scoreless innings. He allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out one. Jordan Balazovic finished the final four innings, allowing the two runs on just those doubles, and striking out four. On offense, Arias, Rodriguez, and Robles all went 1-3 for the Twins only hits on the game. TWINS DAILY PLAYERS OF THE DAY Pitcher of the Day – Nick Brown, Elizabethton Twins (5.2IP, 0 ER’s, 6 H’s, 6 K’s) Hitter(s) of the Day – Jermaine Palacios, Fort Myers Miracle (3-4, 2 R’s, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, SB) Travis Blankenhorn, Cedar Rapids Kernels (3-5, R, 2 2B’s, 3B, 3 RBI) WEDNESDAY’S PROBABLE STARTERS Lehigh Valley @ Rochester (6:05PM CST) – RHP Tim Melville 3-3, 2.44 ERA) Chattanooga @ Montgomery (7:05PM CST) – RHP Fernando Romero (10-6, 2.64 ERA) Kane County @ Cedar Rapids (6:35PM CST) – LHP Evan Sanders (1-3, 8.53 ERA) GCL Twins @ GCL Rays (11:00AM CST) – TBD Please feel free to ask questions and discuss Tuesday’s games!

If you were hoping the Chattanooga Lookouts didn’t play extra innings again on Tuesday night, boy do I have news for you! But they weren’t the only affiliate that had to go to extra frames on the evening, and a third one threatened to do so before walking it off in the ninth. One of the Twins new prospects, courtesy of the Yankees for Jaime Garcia, also made his organizational debut with Chattanooga. I also couldn’t pick between two hitters of the day, so I gave it to them both.To find out how all those extra innings finished on the night, keep reading! RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 7, Indianapolis 1 Box Score Home runs were the name of the game for the Red Wings on Wednesday. Mitch Garver hit his 15th AAA home run this year in the first inning. Niko Goodrum extended the lead to 3-0 with a solo home run in the second inning. Kennys Vargas hit two home runs, a solo and three-run shot, in the later innings to extend the lead even further. Vargas led the team with four RBI. Matt Hague had two doubles and scored both times. J.B. Shuck had three hits including a double. Dillon Gee pitched well, striking out seven over six innings, allowing only one run on six hits. Jake Reed hit a batter, but then got five straight groundball outs in his two innings of work. John Curtiss closed the game, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning At 59-44, the Red Wings are four games behind Lehigh Valley in the wild card race. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 1, Birmingham 3 Box Score The story of the night was Michael Kopech, stud prospect for the White Sox, who will be a thorn in the Twins' side for a long time. He struck out twelve and spit flames. Jonathan Rodriguez provided most of the offensive punch for the Lookouts with two hits (one double), a walk and the team's only RBI. Levi Michael had two singles. Carlos Paulino had one. Nick Gordon drew two walks and scored the team's only run. Kohl Stewart allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks. He struck out two. Raul Fernandez pitched two scoreless innings. Ryan Eades gave up a run in his two innings of work. At 24-8, the Lookouts have a nice cushion as division leaders. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 2, Lakeland 5 Box Score The Miracle took a one-run lead in the top half of the fourth inning, but allowed five runs in the bottom half to create a deficit from which they couldn’t recover. Sean Poppen made his fifth start since his promotion and had the roughest outing of his young career. In five frames, he gave up five runs on 11 hits and a walk. He struck out four. Keaton Steele struck out one in three scoreless innings. Offensively, the bats were quiet. Tanner English and Zander Wiel each doubled. Wiel drove in Mitch Kranson, who had walked, in the fourth. Jermaine Palacios drove English in with a groundout in the ninth. Brian Navarreto provided the only other base hit. The 19-13 Miracle have gone through a cold stretch and now find themselves 1.5 games out of first place. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids at Peoria - POSTPONED (RAIN) A doubleheader will start at 5:30 on Thursday. E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton 0, Pulaski 1 Box Score Not a lot to say about this two-hour, action-starved game. Nick Brown gave up a solo home run in the fourth inning, allowing the game’s only run. He yielded only three hits and a walk over six innings, striking out four, but took the loss. Charlie Barnes pitched two innings in relief, striking out one. Offensively, the E-Twins only had four hits: A double by Shane Carrier, his seventh, and singles by Mark Contreras, Rainis Silva and T.J. Dixon. Though they drew four walks, the team hit a collective 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, sealing their fate. The E-Twins have a 1.5 game lead at 20-14. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Twins 1, GCL Orioles 12 Box Score Another game that was lacking in offense for the good team. Four hits produced one (unearned) run. Three of those hits came off the bat of leadoff hitter Emmanuel Morel, two of which were doubles. He scored the only run. But the rest of the lineup went 1-24 (a single by Jared Akins) and that was all she wrote. Glen Perkins did throw another inning. He allowed a hit, a walk and struck out one. Blayne Enlow piggybacked him and threw 3.2 innings, allowing a run on one hit. He struck out three. The trio of Matt Jones, Jose Bermudez and Juan Mojica was bad. Eleven runs on 10 hits and seven walks over four and a third innings. I’m going to leave the specifics out - someone’s family might be reading - but if you’re into blood and gore, you can click the box score above. The GCL Twins drop to 16-11. TWINS DAILY PLAYERS OF THE DAY Pitcher of the Day – Nick Brown, Elizabethton Hitter of the Day – Kennys Vargas, Rochester THURSDAY’S PROBABLE STARTERS Rochester at Indianapolis (6:05 CST) - RHP Kyle Gibson (0-2, 2.92 ERA) Chattanooga vs Birmingham (6:15 CST) - RHP Dereck Rodriguez (4-1, 2.95 ERA) Fort Myers at Lakeland (5:30 CST) - RHP Eduardo Del Rosario (0-0, -.-- ERA) Cedar Rapids at Peoria (5:30 CST) - RHP Tyler Beardsley (3-4, 5.98 ERA) Cedar Rapids at Peoria (Game 2) - LHP Evan Sanders (1-2, 8.40 ERA) Elizabethton at Pulaski (6:00 CST) - LHP Bryan Sammons (1-0, 1.83 ERA) GCL Twins at GCL Orioles (11:00 AM CST) - TBA Please feel free to ask any questions and discuss Wednesday’s games.

The Twins are finishing up their series with the Dodgers on Wednesday night, hoping to avoid a sweep. A few moves were made on Wednesday as well: The Lookouts released catcher Dan Rohlfing. Taking his place is the newly-acquired Anthony Recker. Fort Myers added pitcher Eduardo Del Rosario from Cedar Rapids. The Kernels also placed pitcher Griffin Jax on the military leave list. They will likely be looking to E-town for rotation replacements. Elizabethton also is down one in their rotation after the recent trade of Huascar Ynoa. Let’s check in on all of Wednesday’s games.RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 7, Indianapolis 1 Box Score Home runs were the name of the game for the Red Wings on Wednesday.
