The Minor League Report is meant to provide Twins Daily readers with an update on the goings-on throughout the Twins minor league system. We include who pitched, who had multi-hit games or home runs, and who was involved with transactions. However, something happened on Wednesday night to remind us again (as if we should need it), that these minor leaguers are more than just names in box scores and stat lines. Byron Buxton made his Double-A debut on Wednesday night against Bowie. Sure, he went 0-3 with three strikeouts. However, in the top of the 5th, he chased a fly ball to right center. It was caught by Mike Kvasnicka, but Buxton dove for the ball. His head collided with Kvasnicka’s hip. The game was delayed for 35 minutes. Buxton was knocked out, unconscious for about ten minutes. He was stabilized and left the field in an ambulance. Kvasnicka also went to the hospital for evaluation.Terry Ryan happened to be in New Britain. He went with the players to the hospital. He later told the Rock Cats radio announcers what he had learned. Mike Kvasnicka was back in the dugout with the team and had just a sore hip. Buxton was given several tests and found no broken bones. He did suffer a concussion and will likely be placed on the disabled list and miss more time. Though a concussion is not a good thing, things could have been much worse. By the end of the game, Buxton had returned to the clubhouse as well. (If you would like to, here is the video of the play.) To find out more about how that Rock Cats game ended up, and much more from around the Twins farm system, you’ll want to continue reading. A top Twins pitching prospect made his first start in nearly a month. Here is the Minor League Report for Wednesday: RED WINGS REPORT Game 1 – Rochester 7, Durham 8 (11 innings) Box Score Knowing they were playing two games on Wednesday, extra frames in Game 1, a continuation of a suspended game, is probably the last thing that either team wanted. Sean Gilmartin had started this game with two innings. He had given up one run on two hits and a walk. He struck out four. When the game resumed on Wednesday, Mark Hamburger took the mound. He was charged with six runs (five earned) on ten hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out five. Stephen Pryor struck out three over two scoreless innings. Aaron Thompson faced two batters in the 10th inning and both got hits. Michael Tonkin came in and gave up the game winning run. Game 2 – Rochester 4, Durham 2 Box Score It most likely was a one-start promotion, but right-hander Tyler Duffey made the most of this appearance with a terrific start. In six innings, he gave up just two runs five hits and two walks. In that sixth inning, he allowed a two-run homer to Nick Franklin. Duffey struck out seven to earn the win. Lester Oliveros struck out two in the 7th for his fourth save. In his last seven games, he has given up 0 runs in 13 innings and has struck out 21 batters. Josmil Pinto went 2-3 in the game. Doug Bernier and Chris Herrmann each doubled. It was a tough night for the Twins top two pitching prospects. Trevor May’s much-anticipated major eague debut didn’t go as well as planned, and in Rochester, Alex Meyer didn’t fare much better. On a more positive note, JO Berrios will return to the mound on Sunday afternoon for the New Britain Rock Cats. Also, Taylor Rogers returned tonight for the Rock Cats after missing nearly three months. Another of the Twins top pitching prospects put together his best start of the season. Minor League Report (7/31): Minor Leagues With A Major Deadline
Eric R Pleiss posted an article in Twins
Transactions Left-hander Mat Batts was promoted from Elizabethton to Cedar Rapids. The Twins had a busy day, but not as busy as some fans had hoped. They moved Sam Fuld back to Oakland in return for the soft-tossing lefty Tommy Milone. Milone will report to AAA for now, but should be up with the Twins before the end of next week. The Twins tried hard to find a buyer for Kurt Suzuki, but finding no suitors, the Twins bought high on Suzuki themselves, signing him to a two-year $12 million dollar extension, with a vesting option for a third year. To replace Sam Fuld on the 25-man roster, the Twins have promoted monstrous switch hitter Kennys Vargas from Double-A.Transactions Left-hander Mat Batts was promoted from Elizabethton to Cedar Rapids. Batts started his career with the GCL Twins before moving up to the E-Twins and now will get a shot with the Kernels. He will take the spot of Aaron Slegers who received a promotion to Ft. Myers. Red Wings Report Rochester 2, Lehigh Valley 5 Box Sean Gilmartin did not have his best stuff, surrendering five runs on five hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out four. His ERA in AAA is still just 3.98. Deolis Guerra pitched the final two innings and gave up one hit, walked one, and struck out one. The Red Wings had plenty of base runners, the collected nine hits and a walk, but could not string things together to score more than a pair of runs. Six of the Wings' nine hits came from Pedro Florimon, Eric Farris, and Chris Rahl, each of them was 2-4, hitting in the seven-eight-nine spots. Josmil Pinto, who probably wasn't having a great evening after hearing about the Suzuki extension, was 1-4, but hey, no strike outs! Rock Cats Review Erie 4, New Britain 5 Box Tyler Duffey pitched eight innings, but didn't have the lead while he was on the mound, as the Rock Cats rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth to give Duffey the win. Duffey gave up seven hits, four earned runs, a walk and two strike outs. Alex Wimmers, recently promoted to AA, picked up his first save with he Rock Cats, pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Aaron Hicks had a big day at the plate for New Britain, he was 3-4 with two runs scored, a double, a home run, and an RBI. Hicks is now hitting .301/.392/.439 over 40 games in New Britain. Stephen Wickens was 2-4 with a double and an RBI, and Mike Kvasnicka was 1-4 with a three run homer that gave the Rock Cats the win in the eighth. Miracle Matters Clearwater 9, Fort Myers 3 Box Matt Tomshaw was bad on Thursday night. He faced 20 batters in three innings. He gave up 11 hits, nine runs (all earned), walked one, and struck out four. Two of the 11 hits he gave up were home runs. The bullpen pieced together six scoreless innings, but the damage was already done. Brandon Peterson pitched 2.2 and struck out three and walked one, Todd Van Steensel went 2.1 and also struck out three, he walked two. And D.J. Johnson ended things pitching in the ninth, he struck out one and walked one. Nothing much doing for the Miracle with the bats, they collected just six hits, but worked their way into five walks. They also struck out 11 times. No Miracle batter had more than one hit. Levi Michael, who is back on the field after dealing with a foot injury, was 1-3 with a walk, a run scored, and a strike out. Byron Buxton was 1-3 with two runs scored, a triple and a walk. Kernels Nuggets Burlington 1, Cedar Rapids 4 Box Chih-Wei Hu picked up his fourth win for the Kernels and is now 4-0 with a 1.50 ERA at Low-A. He went six innings, gave up just one run, struck out four and walked one. Brandon Bixler pitched the seventh and the eighth without allowing any runs, and Jared Wilson pitched a scoreless ninth. Max Murphy was 2-3 with a home run and two RBIs, and Mitch Garver had a home run of his own, a two run dinger on a 1-3 night. Logan Wade had two hits of his own, and a run scored, going 2-4 on the evening. E-Town E-Notes Elizabethton @ Kingsport - Postponed (rain) GCL Twins Takes GCL Twins 4, GCL Rays 5 Box Onesimo Hernandez went five innings, walked five, struck out three, and gave up two earned runs on four hits, including a home run to Tim Beckham. Seth Wagner earned a hold with 1.2 scoreless innings, even though he walked three batters. Trevor Hildenberger was tagged with a blown save and the loss (0-3) with two innings of three run ball that included four strike outs and no walks. The GCL Twins used 12 position players, and collected twelve hits and two walks. Corey Wimberly (rehab from AA) was 2-4 with a run scored and a double, Nelson Molina was also 2-4 with a run scored and Jack Barrie was 2-4, without a run scored. Jarrard Poteete had a double on a 1-4 night, and Manuel Guzman had a triple, accounting for the Twins' remaining extra base hit. After looking at the top starting pitchers in the Minnesota Twins system in July, today we turn our attention to the hitters (and tomorrow, we’ll discuss the top relievers for the month). Chris Colabello won this ‘award’ the last two months. He’s now with the Twins, so there is actually quite a bit of competition for this award for the first time in a couple months. A couple top prospects are near the top of the list. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] July is always an interesting month for these awards. Consider that the players at the upper levels participate in the All-Star game (or get their All-Star break). Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton both played in the Futures Game. The season is also now four months gone, and some players are really starting to feel the long season, particularly those who are on a full-season team for the first time. Here’s a look at the Top 5 hitters from July. --- Number 5 – Cedar Rapids – OF Jonathan Murphy – (29-94) .309/.393/.383 (.776) with four doubles, one home run and nine RBI. Murphy was the Twins’ 19th round pick just last year out of Jacksonville University where he teamed with Adam Walker for three years and Miracle pitcher Matt Tomshaw. He began this season by staying at Extended Spring Training, but when the Miracle had a short-term need in the outfield, Murphy went across the parking lot. He played so well right away that he stayed with the Miracle for 37 games. When he began to struggle, he went to Cedar Rapids in late June. The 23-year-old has now played 25 games with the Kernels. He is hitting .293/.375/.364 (.739) with four doubles and a home run. Murphy is a speed guy and a good outfielder. He is also 4-5 in stolen base attempts. For much more from and about Murphy, check out SD Buhr’s article from earlier this week. Number 4 – Ft. Myers – OF Mike Kvasnicka – (30-100) .300/.366/.490 (.856) with eight doubles, one triple, three home runs and 15 RBI. The Twins drafted Kvasnicka in the 31st round of the 2007 draft out of Lakeville (MN) high school, but he went on to play for the Minnesota Gophers. The Astros took him with the first supplemental pick of the first round of the 2010 draft. They moved him from third base and catcher and he struggled with the bat in Low A ball. Last year, he got hurt. This spring, the Twins were able to acquire him for Gonzalo Sanudo, who pitched for the Twins GCL team last year. Unfortunately, he broke his hamate bone before the season started and didn’t play until mid-June. However, since that time, Kvasnicka has hit like crazy while playing solely in the outfield. His father, Jay, was the Twins 8th round draft pick in 1988. Mike has power and is certainly worth the risk to acquire. Number 3 – Rochester – 3B Deibinson Romero – (27-84) .321/.426/.548 (.973) with seven doubles, four home runs and 21 RBI. Romero has been with the Twins organization for a long time, since signing with the team in July of 2004 out of the Dominican Republic. He was added to the 40 man roster following an injury-plaqued season at Beloit in 2008. After a promotion however, he really struggled with the Florida State League and came off the 40 man roster. He has been with the organization since, and continued to struggle until the 2012 season when he performed well in his second season at New Britain. He could have become a free agent the last two offseasons, but he has elected to stay with the Twins organization. He was invited to big league spring training again this spring, but visa issues caused hin to miss all spring training and his season began late. After eight games in New Britain, he made his AAA debut, and he has been pretty good ever since. He was terrific in July, showing both power and patience (14 walks). Number 2 – New Britain – 2B Eddie Rosario – (36-102) .353/.394/.549 (.944) with nine doubles, one triple, three home runs and 17 RBI. When the Twins drafted Rosario with their 4th round pick in 2010, he was considered the best hitter out of Puerto Rico that year. He has kept hitting since. He has been the Appalachian League MVP and last winter, he played so well in the Puerto Rican Winter League that he was named to their World Baseball Classic team. He began this season in Ft. Myers, but once the Miracle clinched the first half title, he was promoted to New Britain where he has continued to hit. Rosario has incredibly quick hands which allows him to see the pitches a little longer. He has plenty of extra base power, though he doesn’t necessarily like to walk. What makes him a possible 2014 call up that his defense has greatly improved at second base. He definitely is a top prospect. And the Twins Minor League Hitter of the Month is: Cedar Rapids – OF Adam Walker – (35-115) .304/.325/.652 (.977) with eight doubles, one triple, ten home runs and 31 RBI. The question I have probably been asked the most in the last month is, “Why is Adam Walker still in Cedar Rapids?” My answer remains the same. I really have no idea. He hasn’t been all that consistent, but in the first 100 games of his season, he has hit .282/.323/.543 (.866) with 25 doubles, six triples, 22 home runs and 91 RBI. He is also 8-8 in stolen base attempts and plays a solid right field. At 6-4 and 225 pounds, Walker has as much power potential as any player in the Twins farm system, with the possible (though I’m not sure) exception of Miguel Sano. He has struck out 93 times in 427 plate appearances which isn’t bad for a power hitter, but he has walked just 23 times. Despite playing three seasons at Jacksonville U, he is still just 21 years old. His future is bright. What do you think? No Byron Buxton. No Miguel Sano. That said, both of them had very solid months as well. It’s always good to recognize different players in the Twins farm system. Please feel free to discuss and ask questions.

I have returned from Cedar Rapids, havin had a great weekend which will likely be documented here at Twins Daily in a couple stories. I hope also to provide more encouragement for Twins fans to make that trek to east central Iowa. On Sunday afternoon, a Twins affiliate received one of their best starting pitching performances of the season. A new member of the organization also made a very good impression in his third game with his new AAA team. Here’s a look at what happened in the Twins' farm system on Sunday: [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] Rochester Red Wings 12, Pawtucket Red Sox 7 Box Score Jermaine Mitchell came to the Red Wings this past week after being let go by the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. On Sunday, he made a pretty strong impression. The outfielder went 3-4 with his sixth home run. He scored three runs and had four RBI. Brian Dinkelman was 2-3 with his ninth double. Doug Bernier was 2-5 with his fourth triple. Antoan Richardson and Chris Herrmann each had two hits. Vance Worley improved to 6-3 with Rochester. He gave up three runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out four in six innings. AJ Achter came on for his AAA debut and gave up four runs on four hits and three walks in 1.1 innings. He struck out one. Cody Eppley replaced him and got the final five outs, three on strikeouts. (Photo by milb.com) New Britain Rock Cats 3, Portland Sea Dogs 4 Box Score Tom Stuifbergen made the start and threw well. He gave up two runs on four hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out four. Bruce Pugh came on and gave up two runs on two hits and two walks in 1.2 innings. Myers Miracle 3, St. Lucie 0 Box Score What a terrific start for righty Matt Summers. In Port St. Lucie, he pitched his best game of the year. He gave up two hits in a complete game shutout. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven to drop his ERA with the Miracle to 3.20. Mike Kvasnicka remains hot. He went 2-3 with his fifth double. Levi Michael has been playing well of late; he went 2-5 in this game. Byron Buxton was put in the 3-hole of the lineup for the first time this year and went 1-4. Cedar Rapids Kernels 3, Clinton LumberKings 5 Box Score The Kernels made the trek back to Clinton on Sunday afternoon. Saturday was a very busy night in the Twins farm system. It started with the Minier Show in the afternoon. There were a ton of great performances and very exciting games throughout the Twins system. Vance Worley continued to pitch as we all hope. Taylor Rogers continued his tremendous run with the Miracle. The Rock Cats used a few big innings, but could they pull off a win? A couple former Gophers had a big day. So much to get to! Check out what happened in the Twins farm system, Saturday in the minor league parks:[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] Rochester Red Wings 2, Louisville Bats 1 Box Score Chris Colabello provided Vance Worley with all of the offense the Red Wings' starter needed to help manager Gene Glynn to his 300th career win. Overall in Rochester he is 3-3 with a 3.10 ERA. Doug Bernier went 2-4 with his 11th double. Colabello went 2-4 including a two-run homer, his 16th of the season. New Britain Rock Cats 12, Akron Aeros 7 Box Score This game was pretty uneventful until the 8th inning. Going into the eighth, the Rock Cats were down 3-0. They scored three in the top of the 8th to tie the game, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Rock Cats then scored four runs in the top of the 9th to grab a one-run lead. Jose Gonzalez came on and walked one and gave up one hit in two scoreless innings. Ryan O’Rourke worked a scoreless ninth. Tyler Jones came on for the ninth inning and walked one and struck out one before getting the final out. Elizabethton Twins 6, Bristol White Sox 2 Box Score Yorman Landa is one of the talented starters from last year’s GCL squad. He began his 2013 campaign very well, working five innings and giving up just one run on five hits. He walked one and struck out eight. Ethan Mildren came on and gave up one hit in his inning. Brandon Peterson then struck out two in his inning. Lefty Austin Malinowski went the final two innings. He gave up an unearned run on one hit and three walks. He struck out two. Kelvin Ortiz led the offense. The right fielder went 2-3 with a walk and a double. Rory Rhodes hit a home run and stole a base. Romy Jimenez went 1-3 with a walk and a double. GCL Twins 4, GCL Red Sox 5 (11 innings) Box Score Amaurys Minier was again the top story for the GCL Twins. After going 2-4 with a double and a home run on Friday, he went 2-3 with two walks, a single and a triple. 4-7 with two walks, a single, a double, a triple and a home run in two games! Chad Christensen went 2-5 with a double. Lance Ray (rehab) was 1-4. Fernando Romero started and went the first three innings. He gave up two unearned runs. He didn’t allow a hit, walked two, hit a batter and struck out four. Josh Guyer struck out three (and walked one) in a scoreless inning. Leonel Zazueta gave up one run on two hits and a walk and recorded just two outs. A rehabbing Bruce Pugh got the next four outs, one on a strikeout. Reyson Zaquiel recorded two outs. He walked one and struck out a batter. Damian Defrank gave up one run on six hits in 3.1 innings. In the 11th, Jose Abreu came on and gave up the unearned, winning run.
