RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 3 @ Durham 6 Box Score Rochester's bullpen has a 1.08 ERA over the last seven games, including 19.2 consecutive scoreless innings headed into Thursday night’s game and Niko Goodrum has a nine-game hitting streak. The scoreless innings streak came to an end as Alan Busenitz gave up a run in the seventh inning, but Goodrum extended his streak on a 3-4 night that included a double and a pair of RBI. Leonardo Reginatto also had a pair of hits, including a double and a walk, but the rest of the Red Wings squad had just two hits. ByungHo Park was 0-3 with two strikeouts and a walk. The Red Wings were down 6-0 before they pushed three runs across in the eighth to make the final score look respectable. Red Wings starter Nik Turley gave up five runs over 6.1 innings, including three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Turley struck out seven to go along with just one walk. Busenitz was charged with an earned run over 1.2 innings of work, he struck out three and walked none. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 1 @ Birmingham 3 Box Score Nick Gordon entered the game leading the Southern League in extra-base hits (23) and got to enjoy the night off in Birmingham. The Lookouts bats sputtered without him, just 1-11 with runners in scoring position, and scoring just a single run despite FIVE doubles. Ryan Strausborger was 2-3 with a double and a run scored, the only Lookout with more than one hit. Lookouts starter Matt Tracy pitched very well, 7.0 innings, just five hits, two runs (both earned) and he struck out four against just one walk. Unfortunately for Tracy, he gave up a pair of solo home runs, and without any run support was tagged with his fourth loss of the season. Mason Melotakis gave up a run on two hits in one inning of relief. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 1 @ Bradenton 5 Box Score Before the game it was announced that Chris Paul, Dereck Rodriguez, Sam Clay, and Brian Navarreto were all selected to the Florida State League All-Star Game. The Miracle could have used some all-star bats on Thursday night as they stranded 13 runners! The Miracle bunched their hits at the top of the order with leadoff man Max Murphy picking up three singles on a 3-5 night (he also scored the lone run), and the next batter up, Nelson Molina, was 3-5 as well. Zander Wiel the third hitter in the lineup, had a pair of hits and a walk on a 2-4 night. The three combined for 8 of the Miracle’s 10 hits. Brady Anderson was tagged with his first loss of the season after giving up four runs (all earned) in 5.0 innings. He gave up nine hits, including a home run, walked two, and struck out three. He was replaced by Tom Hackimer for 2.0 innings. Hackimer gave up three hits, a run and two walks. Michael Theofanopoulos closed out the pitching for the Miracle with three strikeouts in the eighth inning. KERNELS NUGGETS Quad Cities 1 @ Cedar Rapids 11 Box Score The Kernels made up for the lackluster hitter performances in the rest of the system on Thursday night, exploding for 11 runs. Travis Blankenhorn led the way (and hit leadoff, how perfect) with a 2-4 night that included a triple and a home run. Jermaine Palacios had three hits, Jaylin Davis, Mitchell Kranson and Aaron Whitefield each had a pair of hits for the Kernels, and Lewin Diaz and Caleb Hamilton each had a hit of his own. In addition to Blankenhorn’s solo home run in the fifth inning, Aaron Whitefield hit one too. Sean Poppen picked up his fourth win of the year to move to 4-1 and lowered his ERA to 2.12 with 6.1 innings of five-hit baseball. He gave up one run, unearned, struck out five, and did not walk anyone. Logan Lombana went 2.2 perfect innings to finish off the River Bandits, striking out five of the seven batters he faced (he induced a double-play to the first batter he faced in the seventh). 2. The Twins needed a couple of fresh arms in the aftermath of the Astros series, so they’ve promoted a couple of minor league arms, with ripple effects all through the system. The new names on the Twins to know are Alex Wimmers and Randy Rosario, but the full list of transactions is below.Transactions: Jake Reed assigned to Chattanooga from Rochester, Ryan Pressly optioned to Rochester from Minnesota, Jason Wheeler designated for assignment from Minnesota, Alex Wimmers promoted to Minnesota from Rochester, Randy LeBlanc promoted to Chattanooga from Fort Myers, Nick Anderson promoted to Chattanooga from Fort Myers, Randy Rosario promoted to Minnesota from Chattanooga, Andrew Vasquez promoted to Fort Myers from Cedar Rapids.Logan Lombana returns to Cedar Rapids from extended spring training. 3. Find out everything and more that happened happened in the Twins system on Saturday. Before diving into the minor league stuff, we veer off just a little. Following a bad Twins loss on Saturday, the Twins announced that Michael Tonkin had been designated for assignment. Now that that is complete, the question must become, who will the Twins add to the 40 man roster and the 25-man roster before tomorrow's game? Well, if the team is looking for a reliever, then the options would include DJ Baxendale, Trevor Hildenberger, Alex Wimmers, Alan Busenitz, and maybe even Nick Burdi. Of course, the team really doesn't have a long relief option should they need one, so it's also possible that the team could lean to a starting pitcher to be able to eat some innings in an emergency. If that's the case, then the Twins could call up Jason Wheeler, David Hurlbut, Nik Turley or even Aaron Slegers to fill that role short term. RED WINGS REPORT Rochester, Pawtucket Box Score Game postponed by rain. They will play a doubleheader on July 5th. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 5, Pensacola 1 Box Score The Lookouts had a nice offensive day on Saturday. Pitching is what wins, so we’ll start there. Lefty Matt Tracy gave up only an unearned run on three hits over six innings. He struck out four and issued no walks. Luke Bard came on and struck out three over two perfect innings. Mason Melotakis threw another scoreless inning, giving him 12.2 innings over 10 appearances without allowing a run. Edgar Corcino led the offense. The outfielder went 2-4 with a walk, his sixth double and two RBI. Tanner English also went 2-4. LaMonte Wade went 1-2 and walked three times. Engelb Vielma and Dan Rohlfing both walked twice. Nick Gordon had a big, two-run single as well. These teams were suppose to play a second game on Saturday, but the second was postponed. They will now play two games on Sunday. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 11, St. Lucie 10 Box Score It was a wild game in St. Lucie on Saturday night. The Miracle scored seven runs in the 3rd inning and led 9-1 after four innings. However, their pitchers allowed four runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Chris Anderson made another start. He gave up five runs on 13 hits and a walk in five innings. He struck out four. Anthony McIver started the sixth inning and recorded just one out. He gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks. Sam Clay stranded the two inherited runners in the sixth inning and went two more innings. He didn’t allow a run, a hit or walk a batter, and he struck out two. Jonny Drozd gave up a run on two hits and a walk in the ninth, but he recorded the save. Zander Wiel led the offense. The first baseman went 4-5 with his 11th double and two RBI. He also stole a base. Shane Kennedy was a triple shy of the cycle. He went 3-5 with his second double and second home run. Sean Miller went 2-5. Rafael Valera added a triple. Playing in front of his hometown family and friends, Casey Scoggins added a double. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 3, Ft. Wayne 4 Box Score It was a frustrating loss for the Kernels on Saturday night in front of over 3,000 fans at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. The team had a series of miscues that cost them outs and therefore runs. Domenick Carlini started. The left-hander was charged with four runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks in 5.1 innings. He struck out six. Colton Davis came on and worked two scoreless innings, issuing one walk and recording one strike out. Manager Tommy Watkins thinks Davis can be good and can be a late-inning option for his team. “Yeah, he can (be a late inning guy). He hadn’t pitched in a few days, so we got him in earlier today. He can be really good.” Alex Robinson got the final five outs, and four of them came on strikeouts. His fastball was sitting 95-96 and touched 97 as well. He also has what can be a devastating slider. Control has been a problem for him in recent years, but the Twins have put a lot of time into helping him develop. He’s got great velocity! Regarding Robinson Watkins said, “He’s been very good at locating his fastball.” The Kernels had six hits in the game. They scored one run in three innings, but they were unable to sustain any big innings. Ariel Montesino went 2-4 including a line drive between the first and second basemen. He hustled out of the box and turned it into his third double. Of the hustle, Watkins said “I was pumped about that. I think that will hopefully get him going. He got off to a slow start.” Travis Blankenhorn kept hitting the ball hard and was rewarded with two hits. Jermaine Palacios added his sixth double. Watkins said, “Very good. We talked to him about not trying to get a hit on every pitch. Wait for his pitch and put a good swing on it instead of trying to make it happen. He’s been doing that a lot better the past couple of games, against a lefty no less.” Following Sunday's game, the players will remain on the field and sign autographs for a bit. However, they have quite the road trip ahead. On Sunday early evening, the Kernels will get on their bus and they should arrive in Dayton, Ohio, at approximately 4:00 a.m. Ah, the glamorous life of minor league baseball. 4. Rain won the day in Rochester, pushing Jose Berrios back a day. Chattanooga was supposed to play two games on Saturday, but instead they played just one and will play two on Sunday. Steve Martin would appreciate a ‘wild and crazy’ game for Ft. Myers across the state in St. Lucie. And the Kernels took a frustrating loss against Ft. Wayne on Saturday night, but I had a terrific soft taco and some rice at the game! And, I took lots more pictures so again, be sure to “Like” Twins Daily on Facebook and Twitter as I’ll be adding several more photos. 5. The Twins traveled south to Texas to start a three-game series with the Rangers. Congrats to Jermaine Palacios who was named Midwest League Player of the Week. This came on the heels of hitting .516 with lots of extra-base hits and flashes of home run power. The Twins made a transaction, purchasing the contract of P Nick Tepesch, optioning P Buddy Boshers and placing P Ryan O’Rourke on the 60-day disabled list.RED WINGS REPORT Rochester - OFF DAY The Red Wings open a set at home against Gwinnett on Tuesday. Rochester is 8-7. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 4, Tennessee 7 (7 innings; Game 1) Box Score Houston, we have a problem. It’s Kohl Stewart. Stewart dropped to 0-4 and his ERA inflated to 6.46. More alarming than those numbers, though, is what is causing them to pile up: Walks (four tonight) and wild pitches (also four tonight!). Stewart made it through only three innings and struck out five (which is an improvement) but struggled to find the strike zone. Of his 79 pitches, only 43 were strikes. He gave up five hits and four runs. At some point - probably soon - the organization needs to consider the DL with “left knee tendinitis” or heading back to Fort Myers (probably to pitch in extended spring games). Because, right now, this Chattanooga thing isn’t working for the young quarterback. Randy Rosario gave up a run on three hits in three innings. Luke Bard gave up two runs on one hit and two walks. He struck out two. Both relievers were touched up for longballs. Nick Gordon paced the offense with two hits, including a double. Jonathan Rodriguez also doubled and drove in two runs. Even though seven regulars got hits, it was much too little, too late. Chattanooga 5, Tennessee 0 (7 innings; Game 2) Box Score Matt Tracy struck out five in six shutout innings. He allowed three hits and three walks. Mason Melotakis preserved the shutout with a scoreless inning of his own. There wasn’t a lot of offense in this game either, but well-timed hits opened up the scoring. Dan Gamache had a two-run single and Ryan Walker followed with a three-run single. A five-run fourth inning was all the Lookouts needed. Gamache was the only multi-hit player in the lineup. LaMonte Wade stole his second base of the season. The Lookouts are 9-8. Though he was not charged with giving up any runs, he allowed four hits and a walk and both runners he inherited scored. Tom Hackimer recorded two outs before turning the game over to Logan Lombada. He gave up a run and struck out three. Colton Davis finished the game with two strikeouts in a scoreless inning. Palacios and Jaylin Davis both led off innings with triples, but failed to cross the plate. Aaron Whitefield recorded the third hit, but was picked off first base. Travis Blankenhorn singled.
