RED WINGS REPORT Pawtucket Paw Sox @ Rochester Box Score Taylor Rogers pitched an eight-inning gem on Thursday night in front of a crowd of 4,196 at Frontier Field. Rogers earned his fifth win of the year with eight innings of six hit baseball. He walked one, struck out three, and gave up just a single run. His season ERA now sits just above three at 3.09. Michael Tonkin, fresh from an MLB stint early in the week, picked up his sixth save with a perfect ninth, including a strike out. The Red Wings struck out twelve times against Paw Sox pitching, led by a miserable 0-3 performance from Kennys Vargas that included three strikeouts. Recently demoted Oswaldo Arcia chipped in a pair of strikeouts as well en route to his 0-4 night. Josmil Pinto, the other bat Twins fans have been clamoring for, was 0-4 with two strikeouts of his own as well. What a night! IT wasn't all bad, James Beresford and Eric Fryer (hitting eighth and ninth respectively) were both 2-3 with a run scored. I have no idea how the Red Wings scored any runs, but they clustered their hits together when it mattered to pull out a victory. Final: Pawtucket 1, Red Wings 4 LOOKOUTS LOOK-IN Chattanooga @ Tennessee Smokies Box Score The Lookouts committed more errors (2) than runs scored (1) on Thursday night. They also managed to strike out nine times and walked just once, and earned just four walks. No Lookouts hitter had multiple hits. Byron Buxton continued to slide with an 0-4 night with a pair of strikeouts. Adam Brett Walker was 0-4 with two strikeouts of his own as well. Max Kepler was also 0-4, but managed just one strike- out. The lone bright spot in the Lookouts lineup came from Mike Gonzales who was 1-3 with a solo home run. On the bump, Chattanooga pitchers struck out only one Tennessee hitter over eight innings. Lookouts starter Greg Peavey pitched into the seventh, but was pulled with one out. He was charged with three runs (two earned), he did not walk a batter, and had the Lookouts' lone strikeout. Zack Jones finished the seventh for Chattanooga, but gave up a pair of runs. Time Shibuya pitched the eighth and gave up a run as well. Not much doing in a pretty quick game at Smokies Park, finished in 2:13. Final Score: Chattanooga 1, Tennessee 6 MIRACLE MATTERS Bradenton Marauders @ Fort Myers Box Score Three Miracle hitters had a multi-hit night, and the Miracle picked up ten hits as a team, but couldn't put the bat on the ball when it mattered, going just 3-13 with runners in scoring position. Bradenton, on the other hand, was 8-20 with runners in scoring position and seemed like they were able to score at will, picking up runs in six different innings. Engelb Vielma, hitting leadoff, was 2-5 with a double. Mitch Garver was 2-3 with a walk and a run scored, and Marcus Knecht was 2-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs to pace with Miracle. Kohl Stewart dropped to 1-4 with a five inning, ten hit, five run (four earned) performance. He walked two and struck out three. His ERA this year is 3.92. Stewart gave way to Brian Gilbert, who pitched two effective innings before turning the ball over to Corey Williams in the eighth, who gave up a run, and Luke Westphal in the ninth, who gave up another. Final score: Bradenton 7, Fort Myers 3 KERNELS KORNER Cedar Rapids @ South Bend Cubs Box Score The Kernels fell short of a come from behind victory on Thursday night in South Bend, Indiana. Starting pitcher Dereck Rodriguez, making his Midwest League debut, was tagged for four runs in the first inning, but the Kernels rallied and were within striking distance most of the evening. Rodriguez lasted just three innings, he struck out one, walked four, and gave up those four early runs. Michael Theofanopoulos also threw three innings. He fared slightly better than Rodriguez, striking out four, but giving up a pair of earned runs on four hits. Michael Caderoth pitched a clean seventh and Cameron Booser gave up a hit and recorded a strike out in the eighth. Booser's ERA is down to 0.74 after Thursday's game. The Kernels had just seven hits, but three of them went for extra bases, including a pair of doubles from Kernels' cleanup hitter Jorge Fernandez. Fernandez was 2-4 with two doubles, a run scored and a strike out. Nick Gordon had a pair of hits as well, going 2-3 with a run scored and a stolen base (his 13th of the year). Just two games were played on Tuesday night and a couple of transactions occurred, but an interesting day in the Twins farm system. TRANSACTIONS JT Chargois has been promoted from Ft. Myers to the Chattanooga Lookouts. The flame-thrower did not pitch in 2013 or 2014 due to elbow problems and eventually had Tommy John surgery. He returned to the Instructional League last fall and reportedly was hitting triple-digits with regularity. The 24-year-old was the Twins second- round pick in 2012 out of Rice University where he was the co-closer with current Red Wings starter Tyler Duffey. He has pitched in 16 games this year for the Miracle. He is 1-0 with a 2.40 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP. In 15 innings, he has walked five and struck out 19. To make room for Chargois on the Lookouts roster, Dallas Gallant was sent to the Miracle. Gallant dominated in 2014 in Cedar Rapids and jumped over the Florida State League. The 26-year-old who has also missed quite a bit of time due to injury and also a 50-game suspension has gone 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP with the Lookouts. In 16 innings (12 games), he walked eight and struck out nine. Like Chargois, Gallant also throws quite hard, though he tops out at about 96. To keep tabs on the transactions in the Twins minor leagues, check out our Twins Minor League Transactions thread. RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 1, Durham 2 Box Score The Red Wings went with a bullpen game on Tuesday night in Durham. Casey Fien, in his second rehab appearance, started the game. He needed just nine pitches to get through a perfect first inning. Lester Oliveros came on and went the next 2.1 innings. He gave up one run on two hits. He walked two and struck out four. Logan Darnell was next. The left-hander gave up one hit and walked one over 1.2 scoreless innings. He struck out four. Caleb Thielbar gave up one run on two hits in 1.2 innings. He walked none and struck out three. AJ Achter came on and got the final out on a strikeout. The Red Wings had eight hits, but were able to score just one run. James Beresford was the lone hitter with more than one hit. He went 2-4 with his ninth double of the season. Danny Ortiz went 1-3 with a walk and his 10th double. Oswaldo Arcia played in his first rehab game. He batted third and DHed. He went 0-3, but his sacrifice fly scored the team’s only run. Kennys Vargas, batting fourth, went 0-4. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga Box Score The Lookouts had a scheduled off day on Tuesday after getting rained out on Monday. Two days without a Lookouts game is tough on Twins Minor League fans!! MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers @ Clearwater Box Score Rain fell throughout the afternoon on the west coast of Florida, and after over an hour delay, the game was postponed. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Thursday. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 4, Wisconsin 1 Box Score Despite the game being delayed for over an hour, the Kernels got an incredibly well-pitched game. Stephen Gonsalves made the start and it was right up there with his best. The left-hander went six innings. He gave up one unearned run on three hits. He walked one and struck out a career-high 12 batters. On the season, he has now walked 11 and struck out 66 batters in 48 innings. Michael Cederoth, who was recently moved back to the bullpen, came in and continued the domination. He struck out three batters in two perfect innings. He has nine strikeouts and only one run allowed in 6.1 innings in relief. Cameron Booser recorded his fifth save with a perfect ninth inning. Tanner English led the offense. The center fielder went 2-3 with two walks. He also stole three bases in the game and has 16 on the season. Nick Gordon went 1-2 with two walks, and he stole his ninth and tenth bases. Jorge Fernandez went 2-4 with his seventh double which drove in a run. Trey Vavra had an RBI double in the first inning. Vavra left the game in the third inning when he hurt his leg sliding for a ball near the tarp. He walked off under his own power, limping noticeably though. Later in the game, catcher Brian Navaretto re-injured the same wrist that caused him to miss about three weeks of games. (UPDATE - Jeff Johnson from the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported after the game that Navarreto's thumb was bent back on a foul ball. It was not his wrist.) The Kernels are now 29-17. JO Berrios and Kohl Stewart each made 19 starts for Cedar Rapids. Chih-Wei Hu made just nine starts in the second half of the 2014 season for the Kernels. Happy Memorial Day! There's nothing like baseball on Memorial Day. For the second week in a row, left-handed pitcher Tommy Milone was honored with the International League Pitcher of the Week. He saw his scoreless streak stretch to 37.2 innings that dates back to his lone start with the Wings in August last season. This is the longest stretch in the International League since at least 2005. Milone started two games this week and was masterful in both. On Monday, he pitched a complete game shutout while striking out 13 versus Durham. He capped his week on Sunday by throwing 8.1 innings scoreless innings before giving up a solo home run to end the streak. Max Kepler was also honored on Monday for his stellar week at the plate. The outfielder and first baseman went 11-for-27 (.407 BA) with two home runs and five doubles. He drove in nine runs and scored seven runs to go along with a 1.263 OPS. Kepler had a hit in every game this week and he's in the midst of a nine game hitting streak. It would be a 16 game hitting streak if not for him being held hitless by the Birmingham Barons on 5-15. He currently leads the team in batting average and slugging percentage.RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 4, Durham 5 Box Score Rochester jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in this contest but they weren't able to overcome giving up five runs in the sixth inning. In the top of the first inning, the Red Wings used doubles from James Beresford and Danny Ortiz to plate a couple of runs. Besides another Ortiz double, Rochester's offense went cold until the eighth inning. Then, Doug Bernier's double was followed by a couple of ground outs to cut the lead to two. Kennys Vargas hit a solo home run in the ninth, his third since being demoted. He's batting .409 with six RBI across 22 at-bats with the club. Jason Wheeler was cruising through five innings before giving up five earned in the sixth without recording an out. Mark Hamburger pitched two scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Alex Meyer made his first relief appearance since college and pitched a perfect frame with two strikeouts. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga --, Mobile -- Chattanooga and Mobile started playing their game before rain and lightning filled the sky. The game was postponed and no make-up date was announced at this time. The Lookouts have won five of their last six game and have scored 10 runs or more in four of those contests. After a scheduled off day on Tuesday, the Lookouts begin a four-game series at home against Biloxi. Chattanooga is leading the Southern League North Division with a 28-16 record while Biloxi is leading the South Division with a 27-18 record. Needless to say, it will be an important series for both clubs. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers (Scheduled Off Day) The Miracle enjoyed an off day on Monday like many other employees across the country. Fort Myers is tied for second place in the Florida State League South Division with a 22-22 record. However, they are a distant eight games behind the Charlotte Stone Crabs. The club has gone 15-11 at home and struggled to a 7-11 record on the road. Fort Myers starts a four-game road series with Clearwater on Tuesday night. The Threshers sit in second place in the Florida State League North with an identical record as the Miracle. Mat Batts starts the series opener for Fort Myers. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 12, Peoria 3 Box Score The Kernels pounded out a season high 12 runs with 19 hits. With the win, Cedar Rapids reached a season-best 11 games above .500 (28-17 record) after finishing their road trip with a 5-3 record. The Kernels have scored at least 11 runs three times this season with all three games coming against the Snappers. Every hitter in the Kernels line-up collected a hit and seven of the nine hitters collected an extra-base hit. Pat Kelly was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, a home run and five RBI. Jorge Fernandez drove in four runs, including a three-run home run, in his first game since May 15. Max Murphy and Tyler Kuresa each had three hits including a triple and a double from Murphy. John Curtiss started the game but didn't figure into the decision as he was pulled from the game with an undisclosed injury. He allowed three runs over 4.1 innings, his second shortest outing of the year, while striking out three. Michael Theofanopoulos earned his first win by pitching 2.2 scoreless innings and striking out four. Over the last two innings, Randy LeBlanc struck out three and didn't allow a run. Doug Bernier was pulled from Rochester's game on Tuesday evening and he will be joining the Twins as Eduardo Nunez was placed on the DL with a left oblique strain. Bernier can be added to the 40-man in the spot of suspended Ervin Santana. After a scary scene Tuesday night, it’s been revealed that Chattanooga’s Levi Michael suffered a high ankle sprain while sliding into second base. If you saw the play, you probably expected much worse. It’s a tough break for Michael, who has missed extended periods of time throughout his professional career. Wilkin Ramirez was activated from Rochester’s disabled list. He takes the spot vacated by recently-promoted Eddie Rosario. Let's take a look at the on-field action for Tuesday night.RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 15, Indianapolis 10 Box Score An offensive explosive for the Red Wings, led by Aaron Hicks. The Wings got contributions from all the starters and held on after jumping out to a 10-0 first inning lead. Hicks led off the game with a ground-rule double. This started off an inning that saw 14 batters come to the plate with seven hits, three doubles and ten runs scored. Hicks scored twice, came a home run short of the cycle and improved his batting average to .318. He would have had a chance to complete the cycle, but was pinch-hit for by Wilkin Ramirez in the eighth inning. Josmil Pinto and James Beresford also had three-hit games. The pitching staff was unimpressive, but did enough to get the win. Starter Jason Wheeler gave up five runs (two home runs) in five innings. Stephen Pryor gave up three runs in 2.1 and even #FreeLesterOliveros got roughed up for two runs on four hits (and allowed all three of his inherited runners from Pryor to score). He recorded two outs. A.J. Achter finished off the game with a perfect three-groundout ninth inning. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga - OFF Hopefully a day off doesn’t cool Byron Buxton off, as the Southern League Player of the Week has been on an absolute tear over the last 10 games. The Lookouts have used a hot start in May to propel themselves back to the top of a jumbled Southern League North, where they are tied with Tennessee among five teams who sit within two games of each other. Alex Wimmers will be on the mound tomorrow. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 6, Bradenton 3 (15 innings) Box Score For the 10th time already this season (in only 26 games), the last-place Miracle provided their fans with “free baseball”. Aaron Slegers really settled down after allowing two first-inning runs. He was able to complete seven innings on 86 pitches. He struck out one and walked one. Madison Boer, J.T. Chargois and Brian Gilbert (credited with the win) all made scoreless appearances. Brandon Peterson walked four and allowed an extra-inning tying run to score. Todd Van Steensel navigated a dicey bottom half of the 15th inning to pick up the save. The offense managed 13 hits, but many players had seven plate-appearances and the team batted only .217 on Tuesday night. Mitch Garver had two hits, two walks and drove in two, but didn’t play the last third of the game after being lifted for a pinch-runner in the 11th inning. Zach Granite, Bryan Haar and Jason Kanzler also contributed multi-hit games. Kanzler, who also stole two bases, has seen his batting average creep back up to .218 after a very slow start. Niko Goodrum drove in two runs with a triple in the 15th inning. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 7, Wisconsin 3 Box Score The Kernels improved to 15-11 thanks to hanging up crooked numbers in two of the first three innings and getting a very solid game from a trio of pitchers. After a Wisconsin error, the Kernels were able to plate two in the first inning. Nick Gordon scored on the misplay and Trey Vavra scored on T.J. White's groundout. The Kernels gave the runs back in the second inning. In the third inning, DH Jorge Fernandez had a three-run double to give Cedar Rapids the lead for good. Fernandez had three hits on the night, including two doubles. Gordon added RBI singles in both the fourth and the sixth inning to provide insurance runs. He also stole his second base. Mat Batts earned his third win, pitching six innings and striking out four. He allowed three runs, but only one was earned. Randy LeBlanc and C.K. Irby combined to pitch three scoreless innings.
