  1. Keep reading to find out more on the night in the Twins minor league system on Monday. As always, please feel free to discuss and ask questions. TRANSACTIONS The Twins activated SS Jorge Polanco from the restricted list. To make room for Polanco on the 40-man roster OF Ryan LaMarre was designated for assignment. To make room for Polanco on the 25-man roster, SS Ehire Adrianza was placed on the disabled list In addition, Adalberto Mejia was optioned back to Rochester with RHP Zack Littell being recalled from the Red Wings. Following the game, the Twins optioned Littell to Rochester. Another arm will be brought up for Tuesday's game. Monday was July 2nd, the first day of the 2018-19 international signing period. The Twins already used $2.5 million of their cap to sign Yunior Severino. On Monday, they signed OF Misael Urbina from Venezuela for $2.75 million https://twitter.com/MLBPipeline/status/1013825554137669637 AWARDS Lewis Thorpe was named the Pitcher of the Week in the Southern League. Jordan Balazovic was named the Pitcher of the Week in the Midwest League. RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 6, Pawtucket 2 Box Score The Red Wings went with a bullpen game on the mound, and the bullpen did very well. Four pitchers combined to give up just two runs on the way to a Red Wings win. DJ Baxendale made the start. He gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in the first three innings. He struck out three. Luke Bard tossed the next three innings. He gave up two hits, but no runs, while striking out one. Jake Reed was next and he walked one and struck one out over two scoreless innings. John Curtiss finished with a scoreless ninth inning. He both walked and struck out one batter. Most of the Red Wings offense came in the first three innings when they scored five runs off of rehabbing Red Sox starter Drew Pomeranz. Byron Buxton got things going with a leadoff home run. In the second inning, Edgar Corcino hit his first Triple-A home run, and LaMonte Wade added a solo home run in the third inning. Vargas went 2-for-5 on the game. He added his ninth double to this tenth home run and drove in three runs. Corcino went 2-for-4. Gregorio Petit went 2-for-4 with a walk. Buxton went 1-for-4 with a walk and his second home run of the Red Wings season. He also struck out twice. 3. Let’s take a look at the Top 5 hitters for the month of May, but first here are some players deserving of honorable mention. HONORABLE MENTION Willians Astudillo - Rochester Red Wings - 20-75, .267/.309/.467 (.775) with three doubles and four home runs. Nick Buss - Rochester Red Wings - 17-60, .283/.317/.500 (.817) with five doubles, one triple and two home runs. Taylor Grzelakowski - Ft. Myers Miracle - 15-56, .268/.369/.464 (.834) with five doubles and two home runs. Ben Rortvedt - Cedar Rapids Kernels - 26-85, .306/.352/.435 (.787) with four doubles, two triples and one home run. Jimmy Kerrigan - Ft. Myers Miracle/Rochester Red Wings - 19-72, .264/.329/.472 (.801) with three doubles and four home runs. THE TOP FIVE HITTERS Number 5 – Cedar Rapids - SS Royce Lewis - .317/.363/.465 (.828). 32-101 with nine doubles, two home runs and 16 RBI. The top pick from the 2017 draft, Lewis put together a second strong month. If you were to go look at his April numbers and compare them to his May numbers, they are close. His batting average and on-base percentage were about the same, but he added the extra-base hits in May. Lewis just turned 19 on Tuesday, three or four years younger than most of the pitchers in the league, but he’s more than handled himself well. Lewis takes good at-bats, and his defense has been better than most expected. Lewis should make the All-Star team and then move up to Ft. Myers. Number 4 - Chattanooga Lookouts – OF Edgar Corcino - .276/.377/.480 (.857), 27-98 with nine doubles, one triple, three homers and 17 RBI. Corcino has played well since joining the Twins organization before the 2015 season. The 25-year-old from Puerto Rico had a terrific month. He takes tremendous plate appearances and walks at a good clip, but he’s strong and fast and has some good pop in his bat. He also plays good defense at all three outfield positions and has a strong, accurate arm. Number 3 – Chattanooga Lookouts/Rochester Red Wings - Nick Gordon - .314/.378/.471 (.849), 38-121 with eight doubles, one triple, three home runs and 10 RBI. Gordon, the Twins top pick in 2014, put together yet another strong month in May despite his promotion to Triple-A. One might expect some adjustment time, but Gordon is hitting well over .300 in his half-month with the Red Wings. While he continues to add more gap-to-gap power, I still believe he could develop into a 12-15 home run guy in the big leagues too. That’s a valuable player. Will he play shortstop? We’ll see. He’s done a fine job so far this season. Number 2 - Rochester Red Wings/Minnesota Twins – OF Jake Cave - .317/.366/.500 (.866), 33-104 with five doubles, one triple, four homers and 17 RBI. Before the end of spring training, the Yankees put Cave on waivers, and the Twins were able to work out a trade for him (sending a pitcher from the DSL). Cave had a really strong month with the Red Wings. Consider that his May numbers include his brief stint in the big leagues and it may be even more impressive. He went just 1-for-9 with the Twins, but that one hit was a home run. Cave does a nice job in the outfield.and should see more time in the big leagues. He was a bit of a late bloomer, but a look at his stats in the upper minors the last couple of years indicate that he could be a big leaguer. And the Twins Minor League Starting Pitcher of the Month is: Cedar Rapids Kernels – OF Alex Kirilloff - .360/.423/.640 (1.063), 41-114 with 11 doubles, three triples, five homers and 25 RBI. Alex Kirilloff has been named the Midwest League Player of the Month and the Class A Player of the month already. Why not add the Twins Daily Hitter of the Month award. Kirilloff had a dominant month for the Kernels. He hit for average. He showed good plate discipline and approach, and he crushed the ball. He hit doubles, ran out triples and hit a lot of home runs. On Tuesday night, Kirilloff hit a grand slam. He currently leads the Twins system, and the Midwest League, with 11 home runs and 49 RBI. Early in the year, Royce Lewis garnered most of the headlines, and understandably and deservingly so, but over the course of the month Kirilloff started getting more attention which he so richly deserved. Defensively, he continues to work to improve, but he makes the plays. His arm is strong despite missing the 2017 season with Tommy John surgery. It should continue to improve in terms of strength and accuracy. He’s playing exclusively in right field, with Akil Baddoo in center. Offensively, he is impressive and he’s got a great approach. Most of his power at this point has come to the opposite field. Most of his extra-base hits have gone to left field. Like Lewis, Kirilloff should play in the Midwest League All-Star Game. But also like Lewis, Kirilloff should soon find himself playing for the Miracle in Ft. Myers. We would like to congratulate Alex Kirilloff, Twins Daily’s choice for Minor League Hitter of the Month for May 2018. Feel free to share your thoughts and ask questions.
  4. Tonight we post our final Twins minor league award for May. Earlier this week, we named Todd Van Steensel Relief Pitcher of the Month and Brusdar Graterol the Starting Pitcher of the Month. Tonight, we announce our choice for Twins Daily Minor League Hitter of the Month. There were really some solid performances, but the choice was easy. There were a ton of hitters in the system that had OPS between.750 and .800 for the month, but there was one hitter who stood head and shoulders above the rest this month.Let’s take a look at the Top 5 hitters for the month of May, but first here are some players deserving of honorable mention. 5. Labor Day Weekend is here and with it comes what many consider the last weekend of summer. For baseball fans, this means the playoffs are right around the corner. Luckily for fans of the Twins organization almost every affiliate will be competing in postseason play. Only the Red Wings have yet to clinch a playoff birth. The GCL and Elizabethton Twins started their playoff journeys on Sunday. Rochester entered Sunday with a two-game lead in the wild card race. What kind of drama would unfold? Read on to find out.RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 2, Pawtucket 7 Box Score Entering play on Sunday, Rochester held their playoff fate in their own hands. The club was leading the wild card standings with two games to play. Lehigh Valley was the only other club still in the race and they had a doubleheader on Sunday where they could make up some ground. Both Robbie Grossman and Hector Santiago were scheduled to start for Rochester as part of their rehab assignment. Santiago struggled on the mound by allowing five earned runs on eight hits including two home runs. He struck out four and walked two. Chris Heston allowed one solo home run in three innings of work. Drew Rucinski finished off the game with two shutout innings. Matt Hauge was the lone bright spot at the plate. He went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles as he reached 30 doubles on the season. Daniel Palka picked up both RBI in the game as part of a 1-for-4 effort. Lehigh Valley won their first game on Sunday to cut the Red Wings wild card lead to 0.5 game. In their second game of the day, they would win again which means the two clubs will enter play on Monday tied in the wild card standings. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 5, Montgomery 1 Box Score It took five innings for the Lookouts bats to wake up but they continued to roll against Montgomery. Chattanooga has won 14 of their last 15 games against Montgomery including wins in the last six games. Randy LeBlanc had a lot to do with tonight's win as he tossed eight innings of one-run ball. He struck out seven and didn't issue a free pass. Todd Van Steensel closed out the ninth with two strikeouts. Edgar Corcino has been destroying Biscuits pitching in this series. In all four games, he's recorded multiple hits. His biggest hit in this game was a three-run home run. For the series, Corcino is 9-for-19 with two doubles, a home run, and seven RBI. LaMonte Wade, Ryan Strausborger, and Alex Perez all had multi-hit games. Brian Olson was the only starter that failed to reach base. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 2, Jupiter 7 Box Score In the regular season finale, the Miracle didn't have much on the line. Monday will be an off-day for the club before Game 1 of the 2017 FSL South Division Championship series against the Palm Beach Cardinals on Tuesday at Hammond Stadium. Brent Rooker and Jermaine Palacios both went 2-for-4 with Palacios collecting a double and a triple. Zander Wiel collected his 30th double of the season. Kevin Garcia went 1-for-4. The team went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base. Brady Anderson pitched four innings and allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five. Eduardo Del Rosario was hit around for five earned runs while walking three. Alex Robinson, Williams Ramirez, and Michael Theofanopoulos combined for four shutout innings to end the game. Ramirez struck out three over two innings. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 2, Beloit 3 Box Score Royce Lewis started the game by reaching base on a fielding error but he was removed from the game. He left the field under his own power and was replaced by Trey Cabbage. Tommy Watkins had this to say after the game: Cabbage came around to score on a Caleb Hamilton single and the Kernels had an early 1-0 lead. Randy Dobnak tossed seven strong innings, allowing two runs over seven frames. He struck out one and walked one on the way to a no-decision. Jordan Gore and Travis Blankenhorn both doubled in the eighth to help the Kernels tie the game. Ryan Mason took over for Dobnak and had to deal with a bunch of bunts by Beloit. RED WINGS REPORT Scranton/WB 4, Rochester 4 (Suspended in top of fourth inning) Box Score Rain suspended the Red Wings game on Tuesday in the top of the fourth inning. The RailRiders had scored two runs in the first two innings to account for their runs, including two solo home runs off starter Aaron Slegers. Byungho Park accounted for all four of Rochester’s runs, with an RBI single in the first and a three run home run in the third. The game will be completed tomorrow before their regularly scheduled game. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Mississippi 6, Chattanooga 5 Box Score Starting for the Lookouts was Dereck Rodriguez, and he made it into the sixth inning before he was chased. In 5.2 innings the Braves scored five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks. He allowed a solo home run and struck out two. Randy Rosario came on in relief with two outs in the sixth and promptly gave up a triple to score two inherited runners. He allowed a run of his own in the seventh and in total allowed four hits while picking up two K’s in 1.1 innings. Alex Muren finished the game with two scoreless frames. He gave up two hits, walked one and struck out two of his own. Chattanooga made a late comeback, getting to 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn’t get the big hit to put them over the top. With the bases loaded in the seventh after three walks and a catcher interference play that allowed one to score, they were able to push just one other runner across on a double-play ball before LaMonte Wade flew out to end the threat. In the eighth, a solo home run from T.J. White got it to 6-5, and two more walks put the tying run in scoring position, but it wasn’t meant to be. Edgar Corcino (2-5, R, HR, RBI) and White (3-4, 2 R’s, 2B, HR, RBI) led the offense with multiple hits. Andy Wilkins had a double in four trips to the plate and Nick Gordon singled and picked up an RBI by drawing a bases-loaded walk. Levi Michael and Brian Navarreto each drew two walks. As a team the Lookouts were just 1-9 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 0, Clearwater 4 Box Score The Miracle were shut out in this one as they managed just four hits. Chris Paul was 2-3 with a triple and was also hit by a pitch to reach base three times. Brent Rooker and Mitchell Kranson collected the other two hits for the offense, both singles. Michael Theofanopoulos pitched two scoreless innings of relief, walking two and striking out one. Williams Ramirez pitched the eighth inning, allowing one run on two hits and a walk. He struck out one. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 1, Kane County 9 Box Score Kane County jumped all over Cedar Rapids pitching in this one, building a 7-0 lead before the Kernels put their lone run on the scoreboard. Bryan Sammons took the mound and went the first 3.2 innings. He gave up five runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks. He did strike out six. Patrick McGuff pitched the next 1.1 innings, striking out one but allowing four runs of his own on six hits, including a three-run home run. Lewin Diaz was responsible for the Kernels only run, slugging his 11th home run of the season in the fifth inning. Jimmy Kerrigan was 2-3 batting second in the lineup, and Shane Kennedy added the team's fourth hit. The Cedar Rapids offense did not have a single plate appearance with runners in scoring position as Kane County’s pitcher, Connor Grey, tossed a complete game. The loss halted the Kernels win streak at five and evened both team’s records at 29-29 in the second half of the Midwest League season. Kane County won the Western Division in the first half, and both are 8.5 games behind the second half -leading Quad Cities River Bandits, which Cedar Rapids plays next on their current road trip. E-TWINS E-NOTES Johnson City 4, Elizabethton 3 Box Score Elizabethton took the lead 3-2 in this one in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Andrew Bechtold’s tenth double of the year tied the game at two and a Mark Contreras single brought him in to put them out front. They weren’t able to hold that lead however. Their first run of the game came in the bottom of the third courtesy of a sac fly from Kolton Kendrick. Akil Baddoo finished 1-3 with two walks and stole his fourth base, but was also thrown out for the fourth time. Christian Broussard got the first inning for the Twins and walked the leadoff man, but got the next three. He was replaced by Edward Colina for the second inning. He went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk, with four K’s. Jovani Moran came on with two outs in the seventh and got the final out, but was charged with a blown save in the eighth when he gave up the go-ahead two-run home run to Elizabethton’s bitter rivals. To attempt to make up for that, he did strike out five in 2.1 innings to finish the game. The Twins offense did threaten with two outs in the eighth, but were unable to get a run across to tie the game and went down one-two-three in the bottom of the ninth, all on strikeouts. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Twins 4, GCL Orioles 10 Box Score The Twins were outhit in this one 13-6, and it showed up on the scoreboard as they fell to the Orioles on the road. After the Orioles struck for five runs in the first two innings, the Twins did crawl back to make the score 5-4 after the top of the sixth, but five more runs from the Orioles to answer did them in for good. Tyler Benninghoff made the start and got just one out (likely plan for him coming back from injury is one inning appearances at this point, so don’t read too much into it). He walked two, gave up a two-run homer, and struck out one. Jordan Balazovic came in from there and got out of the first inning, but allowed three runs of his own in the second. He ended up finishing 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out two along the way. He allowed four hits in 1.0 innings, while striking out one. Amilcar Cruz finally stabilized the scoreboard for the last four outs, walking two and striking out two. On the offensive side, two Twins hitters collected two hits. Benjamin Rodriguez was 2-4 with two runs scored, a homer, and two RBI. His home run was the blast that brought them within one. Ricky De La Torre was 2-3 with a walk, a home run, and RBI. His solo shot got the Twins on the board in the second inning. The rest of the team combined to go 2-25 with 12 K’s. 8. I have to admit, Tuesday’s minor league report was a lot less fun to write than last Friday’s was, when Twins affiliates combined to go 6-0. That’s because they flipped that record to 0-5 for this one. The only thing keeping them from completely flipping that to six, was because Rochester’s game with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was suspended due to rain in the fourth inning. That was unfortunate too, as one of their hitters put himself in line for the player of the day award for the second day in a row to that point. To find out just how unlucky Twins affiliates were on Tuesday night, read on...at your own risk. 9. Find out everything and more that happened happened in the Twins system on Saturday. Before diving into the minor league stuff, we veer off just a little. Following a bad Twins loss on Saturday, the Twins announced that Michael Tonkin had been designated for assignment. Now that that is complete, the question must become, who will the Twins add to the 40 man roster and the 25-man roster before tomorrow's game? Well, if the team is looking for a reliever, then the options would include DJ Baxendale, Trevor Hildenberger, Alex Wimmers, Alan Busenitz, and maybe even Nick Burdi. Of course, the team really doesn't have a long relief option should they need one, so it's also possible that the team could lean to a starting pitcher to be able to eat some innings in an emergency. If that's the case, then the Twins could call up Jason Wheeler, David Hurlbut, Nik Turley or even Aaron Slegers to fill that role short term. RED WINGS REPORT Rochester, Pawtucket Box Score Game postponed by rain. They will play a doubleheader on July 5th. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 5, Pensacola 1 Box Score The Lookouts had a nice offensive day on Saturday. Pitching is what wins, so we’ll start there. Lefty Matt Tracy gave up only an unearned run on three hits over six innings. He struck out four and issued no walks. Luke Bard came on and struck out three over two perfect innings. Mason Melotakis threw another scoreless inning, giving him 12.2 innings over 10 appearances without allowing a run. Edgar Corcino led the offense. The outfielder went 2-4 with a walk, his sixth double and two RBI. Tanner English also went 2-4. LaMonte Wade went 1-2 and walked three times. Engelb Vielma and Dan Rohlfing both walked twice. Nick Gordon had a big, two-run single as well. These teams were suppose to play a second game on Saturday, but the second was postponed. They will now play two games on Sunday. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 11, St. Lucie 10 Box Score It was a wild game in St. Lucie on Saturday night. The Miracle scored seven runs in the 3rd inning and led 9-1 after four innings. However, their pitchers allowed four runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Chris Anderson made another start. He gave up five runs on 13 hits and a walk in five innings. He struck out four. Anthony McIver started the sixth inning and recorded just one out. He gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks. Sam Clay stranded the two inherited runners in the sixth inning and went two more innings. He didn’t allow a run, a hit or walk a batter, and he struck out two. Jonny Drozd gave up a run on two hits and a walk in the ninth, but he recorded the save. Zander Wiel led the offense. The first baseman went 4-5 with his 11th double and two RBI. He also stole a base. Shane Kennedy was a triple shy of the cycle. He went 3-5 with his second double and second home run. Sean Miller went 2-5. Rafael Valera added a triple. Playing in front of his hometown family and friends, Casey Scoggins added a double. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 3, Ft. Wayne 4 Box Score It was a frustrating loss for the Kernels on Saturday night in front of over 3,000 fans at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. The team had a series of miscues that cost them outs and therefore runs. Domenick Carlini started. The left-hander was charged with four runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks in 5.1 innings. He struck out six. Colton Davis came on and worked two scoreless innings, issuing one walk and recording one strike out. Manager Tommy Watkins thinks Davis can be good and can be a late-inning option for his team. “Yeah, he can (be a late inning guy). He hadn’t pitched in a few days, so we got him in earlier today. He can be really good.” Alex Robinson got the final five outs, and four of them came on strikeouts. His fastball was sitting 95-96 and touched 97 as well. He also has what can be a devastating slider. Control has been a problem for him in recent years, but the Twins have put a lot of time into helping him develop. He’s got great velocity! Regarding Robinson Watkins said, “He’s been very good at locating his fastball.” The Kernels had six hits in the game. They scored one run in three innings, but they were unable to sustain any big innings. Ariel Montesino went 2-4 including a line drive between the first and second basemen. He hustled out of the box and turned it into his third double. Of the hustle, Watkins said “I was pumped about that. I think that will hopefully get him going. He got off to a slow start.” Travis Blankenhorn kept hitting the ball hard and was rewarded with two hits. Jermaine Palacios added his sixth double. Watkins said, “Very good. We talked to him about not trying to get a hit on every pitch. Wait for his pitch and put a good swing on it instead of trying to make it happen. He’s been doing that a lot better the past couple of games, against a lefty no less.” Following Sunday's game, the players will remain on the field and sign autographs for a bit. However, they have quite the road trip ahead. On Sunday early evening, the Kernels will get on their bus and they should arrive in Dayton, Ohio, at approximately 4:00 a.m. Ah, the glamorous life of minor league baseball. 10. Rain won the day in Rochester, pushing Jose Berrios back a day. Chattanooga was supposed to play two games on Saturday, but instead they played just one and will play two on Sunday. Steve Martin would appreciate a ‘wild and crazy’ game for Ft. Myers across the state in St. Lucie. And the Kernels took a frustrating loss against Ft. Wayne on Saturday night, but I had a terrific soft taco and some rice at the game! And, I took lots more pictures so again, be sure to “Like” Twins Daily on Facebook and Twitter as I’ll be adding several more photos. And be sure to check back at Twins Daily throughout the coming week as I’ve got some stories and interviews that should be quite interesting.Find out everything and more that happened happened in the Twins system on Saturday. 11. It was a full slate of baseball on Thursday as the Twins hosted Oakland and all of the affiliates were in action (including one playing a doubleheader). While there were no moves in the minor leagues, the Twins optioned Buddy Boshers after Tuesday's slugfest and activated Hector Santiago from the bereavement list on Wednesday.RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 5, Buffalo 3 (Game 1) Box Score David Hurlbut gave the Red Wings a solid effort in the front end of a doubleheader. Hurlbut was touched up for eight hits over five innings, but he allowed only three runs (two earned) while striking out two and walking one. He allowed a two-out, two-run home run to let Buffalo back into the game in the third inning. Hurlbut did coax nine outs by way of the groundball, which is impressive. Alan Busenitz and Alex Wimmers each threw scoreless frames to finish the game. Busenitz struck out one in a perfect sixth inning. Wimmer walked two in the seventh inning. Rochester did damage with their bats in the top half of the second inning. Matt Hague singled to start off the frame and was advanced to third on a Daniel “Power” Palka double. John Ryan Murphy drove them both in with a one-out single. After a Quintin Berry single moved Murphy to second, both were driven in on a Bengie Gonzalez triple. Murphy added an insurance run in the seventh inning with his second home run of the season. Rochester 1, Buffalo 4 (Game 2) Box Score Nik Turley made his Rochester debut and it certainly wasn’t memorable from a production standpoint. After giving up a single in the first and a walk and single in the second, but escaping without damage, Turley hoped to calm down in the third and started the inning by getting a called strike three. Then the trouble started. Turley allowed two straight singles and both players advanced on a wild pitch. A walk eventually loaded the bases. After another wild pitch allowed the game’s first run to score, Turley got the second out by pop up and looked to be getting out of the inning without further damage. But Bengie Gonzalez committed an error allowing an unearned run score. Two other runs followed in the inning. Turley didn’t come back for the fourth. He finished with three innings, four runs (three earned), five strikeouts, two walks and a loss. Despite his costly air, Gonzalez did have a decent night at the plate. He was the only player with a multi-hit game and scored the team’s lone run. Ben Paulsen had his third double. Rochester is currently 13-10. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 7, Pensacola 4 Box Score Paul Clemens spotted Pensacola four runs in the first four innings, but held on to make it through six innings. Clemens allowed eight hits and a walk which resulted in four runs. He struck out seven. The bats got going in the bottom of the fourth and didn’t stop. The surge was led by Edgar Corcino, who hit his fifth home run of the season in the fifth inning. Corcino had three hits and a walk, drove in three runs and scored once. LaMonte Wade hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot, in the seventh inning. He also had three hits. Nick Gordon also hit a home run, his second, in his two-hit game. Todd Van Steensel threw two shutout innings and struck out two to pick up the win. John Curtiss earned his fourth save of the season, weathering a walk and double in a rough ninth inning to close it out. The win got the Lookouts back to .500 at 13-13. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 2, Daytona 5 Box Score David Fischer took the loss, allowing five first-inning runs. It turned out to be all the runs Fischer would allow in his four innings of work. All told, three hits, three walks and two hit batsmen did Fischer in. Brady Anderson gave up one hit in three solid innings of work. Anthony McIver allowed a hit in two innings. Not a lot of offensive firepower on Wednesday for the Miracle. Zander Wiel hit his ninth double of the year and scored on Shane Kennedy’s first double. Kennedy then stole third base and was driven in by Brian Navarreto. The Miracle lineup struck out 12 times. Fort Myers dropped to 13-14 on the season. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 6, Lake County 3 Box Score Cedar Rapids used a balanced offensive attack and solid performances from their staff to win Wednesday’s tilt. Tyler Beardsley struck out seven in seven strong innings. He allowed three runs on a walk and five hits (two solo home runs). He picked up his third win of the season. Alex Robinson struck out two and earned a hold. He allowed two hits. Max Cordy picked up his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. He struck out one. Despite giving up an early run, the Kernels answered back quickly. Jermaine Palacios extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a leadoff hit. He would come around to score on a Jaylin Davis groundout. Palacios is hitting a cool .391 on the young season. After getting behind in the third inning, the Kernels strung together some keys hits to regain the lead. Christian Cavaness hit a leadoff double and scored on a Mitch Kranson single. Both Kranson and Jaylin Davis, who walked, scored when Ben Rortvedt doubled. Cedar Rapids added two more in the bottom of the sixth. Aaron Whitefield singled, Brandon Lopez walked and Shane Carrier drove them both in with a double. Davis and Whitefield also both stole bases, their third and fourth respectively. The only batter in the lineup who has not yet been mentioned is Tuesday’s hero, Lewin Diaz, who went 1-4. Cedar Rapids has ridden this hot streak to a 15-10 record. 13. Tommy Field had a banner day with the stick in support of Aaron Slegers' excellent performance, lifting Rochester to victory over the Louisville Bats. But the system couldn't match its perfect Thursday night, as both the Lookouts and Miracle let their games slip away. Just like the Twins, the Kernels were rained out. Find out what else happened around the Twins' minor leagues on Saturday.***TRANSACTION ALERT*** RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 7, Louisville 1 Box Score The Rochester lineup struck early and Aaron Slegers pitched masterfully with the lead as the Wings cruised to victory. Already leading 2-0, Rochester batted around in the third inning, tallying five runs in the process That was more than enough support for the efficient Slegers, who was in attack mode throughout this contest and didn't get into a three-ball count until the sixth inning. Slegers, who was coming off a couple of rough outings, pitched eight innings, giving up one unearned run (due to his own fielding error) while limiting the Bats' bats to seven hits. He walked one and struck out four. Second baseman Tommy Field had a field day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a homer, two doubles and a walk. Field, 30, is now hitting .318/.387/.561 (.947 OPS). Matt Hague and Leonardo Reginatto each had a pair of hits. Niko Goodrum scored a pair of runs, marking the fifth-straight game he's crossed the plate. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Jackson 7, Chattanooga 4 Box Score Things got off to such a great start for Chattanooga. Nick Gordon led off the game with a base hit and later came around to score. By the time Kohl Stewart took the hill he had a 2-0 lead, and he even struck out the first batter he faced. Stewart lasted only four innings and while he only gave up two runs things did not go well. He issued four walks and threw a wild pitch that allowed a run to score. In 19.1 innings, Stewart has now walked 20 batters and has almost as many wild pitches (10) as strikeouts (11). Matt Tracy came in to pitch the final four innings, but had the opposite issue. Tracy notched six strikeouts, but he also gave up five runs. Right fielder Edgar Corcino had a nice game, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. LaMonte Wade had a sac fly, a double and fought the wind to make a great leaping catch at the wall in left field. MIRACLE MATTERS Dunedin 6, Fort Myers 2 Box Score A pair of errors committed in the third inning proved costly, especially against the potent Dunedin lineup that leads the Florida State League in OPS by 20 points. It's not like Dunedin needed any extra help, as they pounded out 15 hits on the evening. Minnesota native Max Murphy recorded his third-consecutive multi-hit game for the Miracle, going 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. After a slow start, the 24-year-old has hit .371 with six walks in his last 10 games. The only other hitter to record two hits for Fort Myers was Rafael Valera. Zander Wiel missed just one game after being hit in the face on Thursday by a 95 mph fastball. He was the DH in his return tonight, and recorded his eighth double of the year. In 21 games, the Vanderbilt product has 13 extra-base hits. Lachlan Wells started for Fort Myers, he gave up five runs in as many innings but just two of them were earned. With four more strikeouts, the 20-year-old Aussie is up to 24 Ks in 22 innings pitched for Fort Myers. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids at Peoria (POSTPONED) Rain prevented this game from being played. 15. In today’s article, I’m going to write about one hitter from each of the Twins affiliates who is off to a good start without much fanfare. Rochester Red Wings IF Matt Hague In spring training, the thought was about how much Byungho Park did to earn an Opening Day job with the Twins. Park is hurt, and now the favorite to be called up if (or when?) the Twins jump back to 12 pitchers has to be Kennys Vargas. If it was me, I would give serious consideration to calling up Mitch Garver since he can play first base and also catch, and he’s hitting well. But the unsung guy all along has been Matt Hague. The 31-year-old was the International League MVP two years ago with the Blue Jays organization. Last year, he played in Japan. The Twins signed him to a minor league deal with a spring training invite. He was one of the last players sent down at the end of camp. In 47 plate appearances this spring, Hague hit .349/.429/.558 (.987) with six doubles and a home run. He went to Rochester, and through his first 13 games and 58 plate appearances, he is hitting .353/.431/.451 (.882) with two doubles and a homer. He’s been a factor in the middle of the Red Wings lineup. While it remains unlikely he will be called up, he is off to a good start and warrants discussion. Chattanooga Lookouts - OF Edgar Corcino I’ve been a fan of Edgar Corcino, the player, since first seeing him at spring training in Ft. Myers in 2015. He was one of the better athletes that I saw. Still just 24, Corcino has been in pro ball since the Tigers drafted him in the 26th round of that draft out of Puerto Rico. He spent four seasons in the Tigers organization. In 2013, he played in the independent leagues. The Bayamon, Puerto Rico, native works out in the offseason with Jose Berrios. The Twins took a chance on him before the 2014 season and he has been solid since. He split the 2016 season between Ft. Myers and Chattanooga. After hitting .266 (.760) in 74 games in Ft. Myers, he hit .284 (.754) in 50 games in Chattanooga. Corcino is capable of playing all three outfield positions well. He has good speed and a strong, accurate arm. Last Friday, he singled in his first at-bat and sprained his ankle. He returned to the lineup on Tuesday. He is currently hitting .308/325/385 (.710) with three doubles. While his ceiling is likely not that of an MLB starting outfielder, his skill set and all-around game make him a possibility as a fourth or fifth outfielder. Ft. Myers Miracle - IF/OF Alex Perez Alex Perez was a four-year starter at shortstop for Virginia Tech. The Twins drafted him in the 23rd round in 2015. He began 2016 in extended spring training. He moved up to Cedar Rapids, where he sporadically played. In his 18 games there, however, he hit .262/.403/.311 (.714). He moved up to Ft. Myers and actually played quite frequently. In 69 games with the Miracle, he hit .242/.345/.273 (.618). The slick fielder can play all over the field. He has played second base and third base this season along with left field. While he’s not a big guy, so don’t expect a lot of slugging, he showed an ability to really control the strike zone. That hasn’t turned into walks so far this season, but he has been very good. He started the season with a nine-game hitting streak, and he has multiple hits in six games. Despite on 0-5 on Thursday, he is still hitting .322/.365/.407 (.772) with three doubles and a triple this season. There is value in guys who can play good defense at several positions. There is also value in guys who put the ball in play and know the strike zone. Cedar Rapids Kernels - SS Jermaine Palacios A year ago at this time, Palacios was a highly-touted prospect. In some local and national rankings, he was a Top 10 Twins prospect. He was 19 years old and coming off a 2015 season when he combined to hit .370/.398/.540 (.938) with 23 doubles, four triples and three home runs between the GCL and Elizabethton. However, last year, he really struggled early in the season in Cedar Rapids. In 71 games, he hit just .222/.276/.287 (.564) with eight doubles, three triples and a homer. His season came to an early end when he was hit by a pitch and broke his hand. Palacios returned to Iowa this spring and his start was much, much better. On Thursday night, Palacios hit a single, double and triple which helped raise his slash line to .388/.444/.490 (.934). For much of this group, the ceiling is that of a role player, but Palacios has the upside to be a MLB shortstop, and he’s certainly one to watch this year and beyond. ------------------------------------ So there you have it. A quick look at four minor leaguers who are, for whatever reason, not at the forefront of Twins prospect conversation. Who are some of the other Twins minor league hitters that you’re interested in? We’ll do this from time to time, discussing minor leaguers who deserve to be discussed. Though I’m looking to you to help me come up with a catchy title for this series… Leave your suggestions or ideas in the comments below.
  16. Born in Puerto Rico, Edgar Corcino was drafted in 2009 by the Detroit Tigers. In 2012, he played at four different levels, including a handful of games at AAA. However, after the season he was released. He spent two seasons in independent leagues. Before the 2015 season, Corcino signed with the Twins. He began the season at extended spring training before spending the final four months of the season in Cedar Rapids. Last year, he began in Ft. Myers, but after a slow start, he came on strong and by midseason, he was promoted to Chattanooga. Overall, he hit .273/.337/.420 (.757) with 20 doubles, 11 triples and eight homers in 124 games. 18. The Twins took a day off on Monday - though you could argue they took a couple days off in Kansas City. Congrats to Stephen Gonsalves on being named Southern League Pitcher of the Week. There was a lot of action on the farm.RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 5, Gwinnett 3 Box Score In the Red Wings victory Monday, the offense was very balanced. Eight of the nine batters got hits. Byron Buxton did some good (three hits) and some not-so-good (two strikeouts: one looking and one swinging). Tommy Field hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Kennys Vargas hit a double and also drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk. Vargas was 1-3 with two walks in his return to AAA. Logan Schafer also went 1-3 with two walks and an RBI. Andrew Albers picked up his 10th win for the Red Wings. He scattered eight hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings, three runners crossed the plate and he struck out seven. Jake Reed struck out two in 1 1/3 perfect innings, and stranded two runners in scoring position. Edward Mujica struck out one in a perfect eighth inning. Alex Wimmers picked up his 11th AAA save. He didn’t have a great outing. After getting a groundout, he walked a batter. Then got the second out with a swinging strikeout. But then he walked another batter before striking out the final batter to end the game. At 72-58, the Red Wings have the fourth-best record in the 14-team International League. Unfortunately, the two best teams are ahead of the Red Wings in the North Division, which leaves the Red Wings five games out of the wild-card race. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 9, Jacksonville 6 Box Score The Lookouts should always feel pretty confident when Stephen Gonsalves is on the mound and Monday night was no different. In six innings, Gonsalves gave up a lone run on only two hits and three walks. He struck out six. How often are games with a sub-1.00 WHIP, an ERA of 1.50 and a K/9 of 9.00 not as good as your recent history? When you you give up your first run on August 22 and you’ve been dealing all year, that’s when. Randy Rosario got a rude welcome to the Southern League. He faced four batters. He gave up hits to two and walks to two. He left with the bases loaded and Todd Van Steensel allowed them all to score. Van Steensel gave up a run of his own in his two innings of work. Raul Fernandez picked up his fourth save for the Lookouts with a perfect ninth inning. The offense blew up for 14 hits and nine runs. Edgar Corcino had three hits including a three-run triple. He scored two runs. D.J. Hicks had three hits, including an RBI double among his two RBI. T.J. White had three hits and an RBI. He hit his fourth triple and stole his eighth base. Zach Granite singled twice (he’s batting .299) and stole three bases (up to 47). Engelb Vielma had two hits and a sacrifice fly. The Lookouts improved to 30-26 in the second half, though that isn’t likely to matter. The first-half champs, the Jackson Generals, are winning the second half as well. The Lookouts are 66-60 overall, which leads Montgomery by a game and a half for the second Southern League North playoff spot. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers - OFF DAY KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 4, Quad Cities 1 Box Score The Kernels got a strong pitching performance on Monday night to improve their record to 69-57. Brady Anderson picked up his second Midwest League win with a six-inning performance where he allowed only an unearned run on five hits. He struck out five. Andrew Vasquez picked up a three-inning save. He gave up a single hit and struck out three. Both pitchers induced a number of ground balls. Anderson got nine outs on ground balls and Vasquez got four. Luis Arraez led the offense (again) with two hits. He played second and batted cleanup. He is now batting .347 on the season. Travis Blankenhorn (DHing) got one hit and walked once (batting .333). Kevin Garcia added a double. J.J. Fernandez scored twice and hit an RBI double. Manuel Guzman didn’t record an at-bat, but drew four walks. The Kernels haven’t clinched a playoff spot yet, but it would take a fairly large collapse to miss the playoffs. E-TOWN E-NOTES Elizabethton 3, Bristol 0 (Game 1) Box Score The E-Twins jumped out to an early lead and never looked back behind the superb start of Tyler Wells, who pitched a seven-inning complete game one-hit shutout. Wells struck out 14 (!!!) and walked two. Wells has won his last three decisions and has struck out 56 in 41 1/3 innings since being drafted in the 15th round. Ariel Montesino set the pace offensively, leading off and getting three hits to improve his average to .322. He scored a run and drove one in as well. Lewin Diaz had a pair of hits to increase his batting average to .312. Caleb Hamilton added a double and drove in a run. Both Alex Kirilloff (.332) and Ben Rortvedt (.200) went hitless in the first game. Elizabethton 3, Bristol 2 (Game 2) Box Score For the second time on Monday, the E-Twins got a great start from their pitcher. Ryan Mason went six innings, giving up two runs in his final frame. He allowed six hits and walked one. He struck out eight and earned his third win. Patrick McGuff picked up his eighth save of the season with a perfect seventh inning that included a swinging strikeout. There wasn’t a lot of offense in game two, but a three-run second inning was enough to earn the win. Hank Morrison drove in Lewin Diaz and Andre Jernigan drove in Mitchell Kranson and Morrison. Kranson added another single later and Alex Kirilloff got his first hit of the game (now batting .332). The E-Twins are now 32-25. They’ve extended their lead to 4.5 games on the third-place Greeneville Astros in a playoff race where the top two teams make the playoffs. They still trail the first-place Johnson City Cardinals by two games. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Twins 4, GCL Orioles 6 Box Score The newest Twins, undrafted outfielder Isaiah Aluko set his professional career off with a bang, going 2-4 with a home run in his pro debut. Aluko signed with the Twins last week. The offense scored four runs on 11 hits, but all of the runs and 10 of those hits came from the 8, 9, 1 and 2-hitters. In addition to Aluko, who played DH and batted eighth, Dane Hutcheon and Aaron Whitefield, the 9-hitter and leadoff hitter, both had three hits including a double. Aluko and Hutcheon scored all four of the team’s runs (two each). Lean Marrero had two singles and two RBI. Like the sun rises in the east, Whitefield stole a base, his 28th of the season (in 41 games). That’s the equivalent of 100 stolen bases in 146 games. Not bad. Taylor Clemensia was charged with his third loss of the season. He gave up five runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk. He struck out three in 3 1/3 innings. Moises Gomez pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing an inherited runner to score (of Clemensia) and an unearned run. He allowed three hits, a walk and struck out two. Callan Pearce pitched the final two frames. He struck out three, allowing only one hit. With the loss, the GCL Twins fall to 28-23 and drop in to a tie with the GCL Red Sox, who won on Monday. The GCL Twins have eight games left - including two against the Red Sox. In the event the two teams are tied at the end of the regular season, they would play a one-game playoff. Nothing to do with the Twins, but the Northwest division includes the two teams with the best records - both teams are at least five games better than any of the other 15 teams in the whole league - and only one will make the playoffs. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 3, Jackson 4 (12 innings) Box Score Chattanooga took the first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning as they sent eight men to the plate and scored three runs on two hits and two walks in the inning. The big hit was an Edgar Corcino triple to score two and put the Lookouts out front 3-0. Lookout’s starter Stephen Gonsalves was effectively wild for the game's first five innings, as he held the Jackson Generals scoreless despite five walks and three hits allowed. He also did not strike out a single hitter. It finally caught up to him in the sixth. He walked the first two men he faced, and threw a wild pitch, before Raul Fernandez came in from the bullpen. Both inherited runners would score, one on a bases loaded passed ball, and the other on a ground out. Fernandez allowed a run of his own to on a single to tie the game at three. He came back out for the seventh and allowed a double, but struck out two to finish the inning. Mason Melotakis walked three hitters around two consecutive K’s in the eighth before Zack Jones was brought on with the bases loaded. He got a fly out to end the inning and keep the game tied. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 2, Clearwater 7 Box score The Miracle fell behind early in the second inning as starter Miles Nordgren ran into trouble. Joe Maloney, Trey Vavra, Tanner Witt and Brian Olson all had singles. Michael Theofanopoulos threw a scoreless sixth and struck out two. Luke Westphal allowed three runs (zero earned) in the seventh to put the final score on the board, thanks to a throwing error charged to third baseman T.J. White. E-TWINS E-NOTES Johnson City 4, Elizabethton 5 Box Score The Twins and Cardinals traded blows in this one, as Elizabethton scored one in the bottom of the first to take the early lead thanks to an errant pick-off throw with runners on the corners. Right fielder Alex Kirilloff may have saved a run in the first inning, as he cut down a runner at third on a single for the outfield assist and the inning's first out. It was the beginning off a good day that brought his average on the year up to .383. He singled in the bottom of the inning to move Ariel Montesino into scoring position for the errant pickoff (Kirilloff was also thrown out at third trying to stretch the error into a two-base error). Martinez would finish six innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out four. In the bottom of the fifth Elizabethton tied the game at four, with the tying run being driven in by none other than Alex Kirilloff. In the bottom of the sixth the Twins took back the lead thanks to an RBI single from Martinez to drive in Carrier, and the bullpen took it from there. Quin Grogan recorded five outs and allowed three hits and a walk, but got some help thanks to a 9-6-4 double play that was started by Kirilloff in right field. The runner on first also tagged on the fly and shortstop Montesino cut the throw off and nabbed the trailing runner at second. Kirilloff got credit for his second outfield assist of the game. Grogan got a double play ball in the eighth but then allowed a double that summoned Johan Quezada from the bullpen. Baxendale pitched a perfect inning, Sean Burnett gave up an unearned run while recording one out, and Alex Wimmers walked a batter in an inning of work.
