The first Saturday of the minor league season presented us with several interesting story lines. Two pitchers that Twins fans have high hopes for made their first starts of the season, Jose Berrios for Rochester and Fernando Romero in Chattanooga. The Red Wings had to wait two days, but they played their first game of the year. Meanwhile, Cedar Rapids and Ft. Myers both played their home openers.Find out everything that happened in the Twins minor league system on Saturday. When a guy comes back from an injury, it’s a big deal. When a prospect comes back from two major surgeries, it is a really big deal. When a prospect who is capable of hitting 98 mph with a fastball returns after missing nearly two years, it is remarkable. When a prospect capable of hitting 98 returns and has what can only be called an incredible outing, it is very exciting. In the same game, one player knocked his first two home runs of the season. Two guys added their fourth homers of the season. And hey, Robbie Grossman debuted with the Twins and went 3-4 with a homer and three RBI.For much more on what happened on Friday in the Twins farm system, please continue. TRANSACTIONS It was a pretty quiet day on the transaction front on Friday with just one move announced. The Cedar Rapids Kernels added RHP Fernando Romero and sent Kuo Hua Lo to Extended Spring Training.RED WINGS REPORTRochester 1, Durham 4 Box Score This game was actually pushed forward a half-hour due to expected weather conditions later in the evening. The Red Wings scored one in the ninth inning, but that was it for them. They were facing Baseball America’s 2015 Minor League Player of the Year Blake Snell. The left-hander threw six shutout innings, allowing just three hits. He didn’t walk a batter and recorded ten strikeouts. Overall, the Red Wings had just five hits. Adam Brett Walker and James Beresford each had a single and a walk. Kennys Vargas had the lone extra-base hit, his sixth double. Logan Darnell started for the Red Wings. He was charged with four runs on ten hits over 5.1 innings. He didn’t walk any and struck out two. Buddy Boshers struck out four of the five batters he faced. Ryan O’Rourke had a walk and a hit allowed in his inning, but he did not give up a run. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 3, Jackson 2 Box Score Nick Greenwood was back on the mound for the Lookouts and had another terrific start. He gave up two runs - both in the 6th inning - on six hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out three. Trevor Hildenberger came on and recorded his third save. He walked two and struck out one over two innings. Offensively, Dalton Hicks continued to lead the way. The slugger went 2-4 with his fourth home run of the year. Joe Maloney added a two-run triple. Zach Granite went 2-4. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 2, Tampa 8 Box Score Before the game, it was announced that Eduardo Escobar and Kyle Gibson would start rehab assignments with the Miracle. Gibson is expected to start on Saturday. Escobar made a start on Friday night. He batted second and played shortstop. He was 1-3 with a triple before leaving the game late (as planned). Max Murphy went 2-3 with a walk in the game. Alex Real added his fourth homer. Chris Paul reached double-digits in doubles with his tenth. Randy Rosario went just 4.2 innings, though he wasn’t helped by his defense. He gave up six runs but just two were earned. Still, he gave up seven hits and walked four in his outing. He did strike out four as well. John Curtiss had his best Miracle outing to date. He struck out two in 2.1 perfect innings. Luke Bard came in and struck out five over two innings. He gave up two unearned runs on a hit and two walks. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 9, Quad Cities 0 Box Score Two years ago at about this time, I was driving down to Cedar Rapids, excited because I was going to get to see lefty Lewis Thorpe and right-hander Fernando Romero, two very exciting, young pitching prospects. While getting some gas, I looked on my phone and noticed that Romero had been placed on the disabled list with an elbow issue. By the time I got to Cedar Rapids, people were pretty clear that he would be out for awhile. In June, Romero had Tommy John surgery. While rehabbing, he had knee injury that required surgery and cost him time. Fast-forward to tonight. The hard-throwing right-hander came back in style. He threw five innings without giving up a run. He didn’t walk a batter and no, he didn’t give up a hit. He struck out four. He finished with 63 pitches. Anthony McIver came in and kept the no-hitter intact into the 7th inning. He struck out four over three scoreless innings. He gave up two hits. Michael Cederoth worked a scoreless ninth. The top five hitters in the Kernels order provided most of the offense. Leadoff man Luis Arraez went 2-3 with two walks and his seventh double. Daniel Kihle led the way. He hit his first two Midwest League home runs. He drove in six runs in the game. LaMonte Wade went 2-5 and stole his fourth base. AJ Murray went 2-5. Five-hitter Zander Wiel went 3-5 in the game. Take a few minutes to read the terrific responses that Kihle provided for our questions today. Feel free to discuss or ask questions in the Comments below. ----------------------------------------------------- Seth Stohs (SS): Growing up in Kansas, who was your favorite team to follow? Who were some of your favorite players? Daniel Kihle (DK): I used to go to Opening Day with my dad and his work friends every year to the Royals games in Kansas City, but actually my favorite team to follow when I was young was the Arizona Diamondbacks because I really sat and watched my first World Series in 2001 when they won it. I remember watching Randy Johnson pitching and thought he was amazing so I followed him from that point on. SS: What were some of the better memories of your high school baseball career? Did you play other sports? DK: I would say some of the better memories would be my freshman year when I got to pitch the first game of regional, and we ended up winning because our first baseman hit a huge home run in the last inning to win! The other great memory was my junior season when we were the first team in our school’s history to finish with a perfect record through the regular season. SS: You grew up less than 25 miles from Wichita State. I know you had other offers, but was it an easy decision to sign and play for the Shockers? DK: Yes, it was very easy to make that decision. I grew up watching a lot of their games, and I always told my dad I was going to play for the Shockers one day. At the time (when I was 10) I don't really think we were serious. As time went on, it became more of a reality that I could end up playing on that field. When I got the offer, I didn't hesitate to commit right away! SS: What were a couple of your highlights from your college years? DK: The biggest highlight was my freshman year when we lost the first game of conference tournament and then won the next 5 or 6 games in a row and made it to a regional. It was awesome being a part of a team that pulled together and found a way to win no matter what happened. We came from behind every game I believe. It was a blast! SS: Did you have the chance to speak with many scouts before the draft? Did you have any idea where in the draft you might be selected? What was your interaction with the Twins scout? DK: Yes I did speak to some before the draft. No, I did not really have any clue where I would be drafted. I spoke with JR DeMercurio quite a few times before the draft, and then he called me right after I was selected. SS: The Twins took you in the 18th round. How did you find out that you had been drafted? How busy was your phone at that moment? I was out on a boat at Table Rock Lake in Missouri the day that I got drafted. I was swimming around the boat just hanging out when I heard my phone go off. It was my head coach from Wichita State, Todd Butler, congratulating me on being drafted. I answered and then got another call from JR and had to switch lines and that is when I found out I was drafted to the Twins. My phone was pretty busy! I tried to respond to everyone's phone calls and texts, but I am sure I didn't get to them all. It was an exciting time. SS: What was the adjustment like for you, from the amateur/college game to the professional game, both on and off the field? DK: The biggest adjustment was just playing every day. In college, we get at least two days off per week so your body and mind has time to recover and get ready for the next series. I think we got three days off this whole summer. It was just a big learning experience on how to keep your mind and body ready every day. It was also strange being that far away from home and paying rent to live in a small apartment off the back of someone's house. It was all new to me! SS: You put up solid numbers at E-Town in your pro debut last summer, walking quite a bit and showing good power. Having had time to look back, how do you feel about how you played? DK: I feel like I did pretty well this summer. I started out really rough, but was pleased at how I adjusted the last half of the season and learned how I needed to play. Jeff Reed taught me a lot this summer and really helped me get better every day. SS: At this stage in your career, what would you say are your biggest strengths? DK: I would say I am pretty good at letting go of what happened yesterday so I can just focus on what I need to do today. It is very hard to play a game if you are worried about making up for your bad game the day before. It is also hard to forget about a good game that you had the day before. Sometimes they make a player get too confident and then they don't work as hard as they need to. It is very important to keep an even head no matter what is going on. SS: What are the areas of your game that you would like to spend time working to improve? DK: I need to improve all aspects of my game. I wouldn't say that any area of my game is at a point that I don't need to improve it. I need to continue to improve my all-around game to help the Twins any way possible SS: Who are some of the people who have helped you get to this point in your career? DK: My parents are my biggest help no doubt. They believed in me from a young age and never gave up on me. They always pushed me to play better and improve my skills, but they were always there to cheer me on along the way. My college coaches really helped me understand the level of baseball that I can and should be playing at and pushed me to get there. They are a big reason to why I got the opportunity to play professional baseball. SS: How has your offseason been? What do you do when you’re not playing baseball? DK: My off season has been good! I have spent a lot of time deer and duck hunting. Pretty much every day I would go out if I had to opportunity! I love getting away from everything and go sit in a tree stand or duck blind and just watch the animals. SS: At what point did you start your preparation for the 2016 season? DK: I took a few weeks off after Instructs and then started lifting a lot. I started running and hitting a few weeks after. SS: Favorite baseball movie? DK: The Rookie! ----------------------- A Big Thank You to Daniel Kihle for taking time to answer our questions. Best wishes to him in 2016! Feel free to ask questions or leave thoughts below.

Today, we also present another Q&A with a Minnesota Twins minor leaguer and member of the team’s 2015 draft class. Palacios hits so well, having his eyes open is only a recommendation. Honorable Mention: Manuel Guzman, Elizabethton Twins: 49-178, .275/.377/.337 (.714), 6 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 14, RBI, 19-23 SB. Brian Olson, GCL Twins/Elizabethton Twins: 32-106, .302/.414/.415 (.829), 4 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 11 RBI. Chris Paul, Elizabethton Twins/Cedar Rapids Kernels: 37-131, .282/.343/.443 (.785), 10 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 21 RBI, 2-2 SB . Lewis Diaz, GCL Twins/Elizabethton Twins: 37-159, .233/.322/.371 (.693), 8 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 20 RBI, 2-2 SB. Short-Season Hitter of the Year Here are the top five places (seven vote-getters) for Twins Minor League Short-Season Hitter of the Year. #5 (tie)– Luis Arraez, GCL Twins: 64-207, .309/.377/.391 (.768), 15 2B, 1 3B, 19 RBI, 8-16 SB. Arraez, a second baseman, came from Venezuela. After spending the summer of 2014 in the DSL, Arraez made his US debut this season. Arraez got off to a hot start in the short month of June (.333/.407/.458) before having two very similar months in July (.306/.368/.365) and August (.306/.376/.398). The lefty had a higher batting average against RHPs (.311 to .302), but had very similar splits overall (.377 OBP vs RHP; .375 OBP vs LHP; .395 SLG vs LHP; .390 SLG vs RHP). Travis Blankenhorn, GCL Twins/Elizabethton Twins: 47-193, .244/.321/.347 (.668), 7 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 23 RBI, 3-3 SB. This year’s 3rd rounder made his debut in the GCL before earning a promotion to the Appalachian League in Mid-July. Blankenhorn struggled both in the GCL in June and in Elizabethton in August, but sandwiched a very nice July in between. In seven games before his promotion in the GCL, Blankenhorn batted .286/.375/.429 (.804) and then continued hitting in Elizabethton, slashing .321/.387/.482 (.869) in 16 games there. A.J. Murray, Elizabethton Twins: 42-159, .264/.366/.409 (.774), 11 2B, 4 HR, 0-1 CS. The Twins were very happy to pop Murray in the 14th round out of Georgia Tech in this past June’s draft. He hit his first professional home run in only his second game on June 25. He hit two more in early July before cooling off, hitting only one more before the end of the season. Murray had reverse splits, faring much better against same-sided (right-handed) pitchers, slashing .288/.397/.424 (.821) and struggling against lefties (.195/.267/.366, {.633}) #4 – Christian Cavaness, GCL Twins/Elizabethton Twins: 21-65, .323/.421/.538 (.960), 6 2B, 4 3B, 10 RBI, 6-9 SB. Cavaness joined the organization as an undrafted free agent, which is unique in that Cavaness had eligibility left. He joined the GCL Twins on the last day of July. After a three-hit game on August 14, Cavaness was enjoying the best stat line he’d have all year: .441/.537/.794 (1.331). Despite cooling off, Cavaness definitely put himself in a position to make prospect-watchers take note. #3 – Daniel Kihle, Elizabethton Twins: 39-143, .273/.404/.392 (.796), 7 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 21 RBI, 5-6 SB. Kihle spent all season as a regular in E-town’s outfield and his presence in the lineup was much needed. After joining the organization as an 18th-round pick in the most recent draft from Wichita State, the former Shocker put up impressive numbers including an OBP of .478 in 16 July games and an OPS over .800 in August (.806). #2 – LaMonte Wade, Elizabethton Twins/Cedar Rapids Kernels: 74-245, .302/.418/.486 (.904), 8 2B, 5 3B, 9 HR, 45 RBI, 12-13 SB. Wade, who was coming off a broken hamate bone suffered early this spring while at Maryland, hit the ground running as a professional. The lefty hit right-handed pitchers as well as you’d hope, slashing .289/.395/.489 (.884) in 229 at-bats. What’s even more encouraging is that in his 77 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers, Wade put up a .345/.493/.473 (.966) line. All told in the regular season Wade also walked 47 times while only striking out 36 times. These are all signs that point to Wade being a pretty advanced hitter. In the inaugural Twins Draftbook, I noted that Wade had a high floor and that he’s been compared to David DeJesus. Look for frequent recognition of Wade this winter. Short-Season Hitter of the Year – Jermaine Palacios, GCL Twins/Elizabethton Twins: 87-235, .370/.398/.540 (.938), 23 2B, 4 3B, 3 HR, 37 RBI, 9-13 SB. Nobody did more to propel himself into the prospect spotlight than short-season shortstop Jermaine Palacios. In fact, after spending only one season in the DSL, Palacios came stateside and then made a rare jump to Elizabethton after only playing 26 games in the GCL. The 26 games might have been more than was necessary. Palacios absolutely destroyed the GCL. He had 40 hits in 95 at-bats (.421 batting average). He walked almost as many times as he struck out (9 vs. 12) and reached base 47% percent of the time he stepped to the plate. He had 12 extra-base hits and slugged .589. His OPS was a whopping 1.061. Examining those numbers even more closely, Palacios started the season 1-for-19. So once the cold streak ended, Palacios batted over .500 for three weeks. This included a stretch of 17 games where Palacios had two or more hits in 14 of them. During that stretch, he went hitless once, but only struck out 5 times. What an amazing run! Even after the multi-hit barrage ended, Palacios continued to hit, going 4-for-13 (.308) in his final four games in the GCL. On how many occasions in pro ball do we see a guy bat .308 and have his batting average drop 13 points? I’d guess none after the first week of the season… besides Palacios. So how did he do after his promotion? He came out on another tear. He started his E-town career with a 12-game hitting streak. And it wasn’t a cheap streak either: Seven multi-hit games including three three-hit games and a four-hit game. He drove in 13 runs in his first six games. Unfortunately, the hot-streak came to an end and Palacios, who was batting .420 with an OPS nearing 1.100 on August 11, finished the year batting 50 points lower with a still-respectable OPS of .938. In a system that recently lacked any high-upside shortstop prospects, that system is now flooded with them: Jorge Polanco, Engelb Vielma and Nick Gordon are arguably all Top 15 prospects in the organization. “We’ve already got three or four guys we really believe in, and Palacios has been as impressive as the rest,” Twins VP of Player Personnel Mike Radcliff told Baseball America earlier this month. The Ballots In an attempt to be transparent, here are the votes from our Twins Daily minor league writers: Seth Stohs – 1) LaMonte Wade, 2) Jermaine Palacios, 3) Luis Arraez, 4) Daniel Kihle, 5) Brian Olson Jeremy Nygaard – 1) Jermaine Palacios, 2) LaMonte Wade, 3) Travis Blankenhorn, 4) Christian Cavaness, 5) Chris Paul Cody Christie – 1) Jermaine Palacios, 2) LaMonte Wade, 3) Christian Cavaness, 4) A.J.
