The Red Wings, Lookouts, Miracle and GCL Twins combined to score three runs. Meanwhile, both the Kernels and E-Twins scored in double-digits thanks to big games from Jose Miranda, Ryan Jeffers and many others. Also, Royce Lewis made his debut in Fort Myers and Nick Gordon left the Lookouts' game with an injury. To take his spot in Cedar Rapids, Michael Davis, the team’s 24th-round pick from this year’s draft, was promoted up from Elizabethton. Also, Byron Buxton was placed on the seven-day DL in Rochester. The good news on Buxton is that he is suffering from a left wrist strain and not something more serious. Lewis Thorpe (Chattanooga) and Alex Kirilloff (Ft. Myers) were placed on the Temporary Inactive Lists of their teams. Both will be participating in the Futures Game on Sunday. RED WINGS REPORT Scranton/WB 4, Rochester 0 Box Score SP: Kohl Stewart (6.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) HR: None Multi-hit games: None The Red Wings trailed 1-0 until Tyler Duffey gave up three runs in the eighth inning. Rochester had only four hits: a Jordan Pacheco double and singles from Taylor Motter, Gregorio Petit and Kennys Vargas. The big news out of this one is that Nick Gordon left early due to an apparent hand injury after fouling off a pitch. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Montgomery 5, Chattanooga 2 Box Score SP: Omar Bencomo (4.2 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K) HR: Mitchell Kranson (1) Multi-hit games: None Mitchell Kranson hit his first homer of the season, and that was the only extra-base hit for the Lookouts. Ryan Walker was 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base. Brent Rooker committed two errors in left field. Andrew Vasquez pitched two perfect innings out of the bullpen and struck out four batters. MIRACLE MATTERS Lakeland 3, Fort Myers 1 Box Score SP: Brusdar Graterol (5.0 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) HR: None Multi-hit games: Taylor Grzelakowski Royce Lewis was 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout in his Florida State League debut. In his four trips to the plate, Miguel Sano struck out in two and walked in the other two. Taylor Grzelakowski was 2-for-4 with the lone Miracle RBI and Aaron Whitefield was 1-for-5 with a stolen base and the lone run scored. Brusdar Graterol gave up two runs on eight hits and a walk. Over five innings, he had just two strikeouts. Tom Hackimer gave up another run over his two frames before Adam Bray pitched a scoreless eighth. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids Box Score W: Jordan Balazovic (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K) HR: Jose Miranda (10) Multi-hit games: Jose Miranda, Andrew Bechtold, Robby Rinn, Jacob Pearson, Akil Baddoo, Ben Rodriguez Ben Rortvedt, Alex Kirilloff, Brusdar Graterol and now Royce Lewis are all gone, so that means Cedar Rapids just isn’t worth watching anymore, right? HA! Jose Mirada was the star of this one, going 4-for-5 with a homer, a double and five RBIs. Miranda has now hit 21 homers in 138 games over the past two seasons. Andrew Bechtold also collected four hits and Robby Rinn had three hits and a walk. Akil Baddoo was 2-for-4 with a walk and Jacob Pearson filled up the stat sheet with a single, a double, two RBIs and two runs. Jordan Balazovic, 19, improved to 5-1 and has a 2.37 ERA in 38 innings pitched for the Kernels. Calvin Faucher gave up a run over his two innings, racking up three strikeouts, before Kevin Marnon finished things out with two scoreless frames and three strikeouts of his own. Well, Saturday he hit his third homer in the past five games. Jeffers went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and two walks. He drove in a pair and scored three runs. Both Chris Williams and Alex Robles had three hits, a walk and scored three runs. Robles also had three RBIs. The E-Twins lead the Appy League West division with a 15-8 record. As the short-season minor leagues get going, it’s a lot of fun to highlight a lot of Firsts: First hits, first doubles, first wins, etc. There were a lot of firsts in Elizabethton on Wednesday night. Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton both played in minor league games on Wednesday. TRANSACTIONS Chattanooga’s Williams Ramirez pitched in the Southern League All- Star game on Tuesday night and was placed on the Lookouts disabled list on Wednesday.Lefty Andrew Vasquez returns to the Lookouts.RHP Colton Davis and RHP Brady Anderson were activated from the Miracle DL with LHP Kevin Marnon going on the DL.RED WINGS REPORTRochester 2, Syracuse 0 Box Score Lefty Adalberto Mejia celebrated his 25th birthday on Wednesday by tossing seven shutout innings. He gave up just three hits, walked one and struck out eight batters in the game. He improved to 3-2 while dropping his ERA to 2.91 on the season. Gabriel Moya pitched a scoreless eighth inning despite giving up a hit and walking a batter. Alan Busenitz came on for a perfect ninth inning, including a strikeout. It was just his second save of the season. The Red Wings offense didn't do much either. In fact, both of their runs came in the fourth inning. It had the making of a really big inning, but it also turned into a disaster. They had the bases loaded with nobody out, but two straight batters hit grounders that were fielded and the out was made at home. With two outs, Byron Buxton came through with a single that scored two, the second on a throwing error. Buxton was 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base. Willians Astudillo went 2-for-4 with his ninth and tenth doubles. Nick Gordon added a triple. LaMonte Wade was 0-for-2, but he walked twice. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga Box Score The Lookouts have the final day of their All-Star break on Wednesday. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 1, Tampa 5 Box Score Clark Beeker put together another quality start, but the Miracle offense was unable to provide enough support. Beeker gave up three runs on six hits and a walk over the first six innings. He struck out seven. Brady Anderson came on and gave up two runs on three hits and three walks over the final three innings. He struck out two. The Miracle managed just four hits in the game. Caleb Hamilton had the long extra -base hit, his ninth double of the season. Miguel Sano went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. Maybe more surprising, Luis Arraez went 0-for-4, though he did drive in a run. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids Box Score The Kernels enjoyed their final day of the All-Star break. They get back into game action on Thursday at home E-TWINS E-TALK Elizabethton Twins 15, Burlington 3 Box Score Less than two weeks ago, 6-9 starting pitcher Tyler Palm was working in the United Shores Professional Baseball League. On Wednesday night, Palm made his first start for an affiliated baseball club and did a nice job. He gave up two runs on seven hits over five innings. He struck out seven batters without issuing a walk. Derek Molina came on and struck out three in two scoreless, hitless innings. Juan Gamez threw the final two innings. He was charged with an unearned run on two hits and a walk. He struck out four. The E-Twins got contributions from several players on their way to 15 runs on 19 hits. Alex Robles went 4-for-4 with a walk. He drove in two runs and scored two runs. Trevor Casanova, playing in his first game, went 3-for-4 with two doubles. He was also hit by a pitch. Jared Akins had a double and a triple. Casanova’s fellow catcher at Cal State Northridge, Albee Weiss, has already been moved to the outfield. He had his first two professional hits in this game, including a double. Fourth-round pick Dashawn Keirsey went 2-for-5 with a triple, again, his first two hits. Yunior Severino had his first two hits in the Twins organization and drove in four runs. Eighth-round pick Chris Williams had his first hit, a double. GCL TWINS TALK GCL Twins 5, GCL Orioles 1 Box Score The GCL Twins improved to 3-0 on the season thanks to some strong pitching. Kai-Wai Teng’s first US start went well. In five innings, he gave up one run on three hits. He walked one and struck out six. Next, Dylan Stowell made his first pro appearance. The 2018 34th-round pick gave up three hits and hit a batter, but no runs, over two scoreless innings. Osiris German recorded the save with two scoreless innings. Aaron Whitefield batted second and started in centerfield. He went 1-for-3 with a double in the game. He had not played since April when he suffered a broken hamate bone. Gabe Snyder, 2018 pick from Wright State, picked up the first two hits of his professional career. Tyler Webb went 2-for-4. Snyder and Webb each stole their first base. Samuel Vasquez went 2-for-4 with a double. Janigson Villalobos had just one hit, but he drove in three of the team’s five runs. It was a relatively quiet day in the Twins minor league system on Wednesday. The Ft. Myers Miracle and Elizabethton Twins each had a rare day off. However, the other four affiliates played. There were two lopsided games, and two close games. A few players new to the organization pitched in the GCL, while one of the top prospects pitched well for the GCL as well. It was Fernando Romero night, and so much more.Find out everything and more that happened happened in the Twins system on Wednesday. Let’s start with the transaction of the day: As Jeff Johnson tweeted after the Kernels game on Tuesday night, Gorge Munoz was sent down to Elizabethton with 2017 draft pick Jordan Gore called up to Cedar Rapids.You'll see below that LHP Kevin Marnon signed with the Twins and made his GCL debut.The Twins also signed RHP Randy Dobnak and catcher Taylor Grzelakowski from the Utica Unicorns from the United Shore Professional Baseball League. Dobnak was assigned to Elizabethton. Grzelakowski was assigned to the GCL.Darling Cuestro, Jose Bermudez and Juan Mojica were sent from the GCL back to the Dominican Summer League.RED WINGS REPORTRochester 3, Lehigh Valley 4 Box Score The Red Wings clawed back from a 3-0 deficit only to lose by one. Niko Goodrum led the offense with a 3-5 game. Mitch Garver added his 22nd double. Daniel Palka went 2-5 and added his ninth home run. It was his first since returning from his injury. Palka also made a play on defense. Now, we do encourage outfielders to hit the cutoff man, and probably not to throw at the launch angle you see below, but this worked well for the Red Wings. Tim Melville made the start. The veteran right-hander went the first five innings. He gave up three runs on six hits, a walk and a hit batter. He struck out six. Drew Rucinski came on for the sixth inning. He gave up one run on two hits over two innings. Jake Reed worked two scoreless innings and struck out four. 20 of his 25 pitches were strikes. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 5, Montgomery 2 Box Score It was Fernando Romero’s turn to start on Wednesday. He improved to 11-6 and dropped his ERA to 2.60. He gave up one run on six hits over five innings. He hit a batter and struck out six. Of his 72 pitches, 50 of them were strikes. Dereck Rodriguez, back from his weekend in Cooperstown, returned to the mound and worked two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. He walked two and struck out three. Ryan Eades got the eighth and gave up one run on three hits. Gabriel Moya worked a scoreless ninth inning to record his 18th save and reduced his ERA to 0.77. Travis Harrison had the big hit early. He went 2-4 with a two-run homer, his third of the season. Levi Michael continues to hit well. He went 2-4. Ryan Walker went 1-2 with two walks. Alex Perez also walked twice. Nick Gordon added his 25th double of the season. The win ended a rare one-game losing streak for the Lookouts in the second half. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers Box Score The Miracle had a rare scheduled day off. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 1, Kane County 9 Box Score It was a long night in Cedar Rapids. Lefty Evan Sanders made the start. He gave up five runs on six hits in five innings. He walked four and struck out three. Another lefty, Bryan Sammons came on for his first Kernels appearance. He pitched a quick 1-2-3 sixth inning. His final line was three runs on five hits and two walks over three innings. He struck out three. Logan Lombana gave up a run on two hits in one inning. The Kernels offense just wasn’t able to bunch together enough hits to score much. Christian Cavaness went 2-4 with his seventh triple. Lewin Diaz went 2-4. Jimmy Kerrigan was also 2-4. He’s hitting .333 and has at least one hit in all five games he’s played for the Kernels. In the second inning, Ben Rortvedt was called out on strikes to start the inning. That was the last play of the game for manager Tommy Watkins as he was ejected for arguing. E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton Box Score There are not very many off days once the Appalachian League starts. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Twins 9, GCL Rays 4 Box Score A couple of pitchers rehabbed. A top 2017 prospect put in his longest outing. The offense provided plenty of offense. And a guy with a fun story made his debut in affiliated ball. Just another day in the Gulf Coast League. Michael Kohn started for the GCL Twins. He gave up one run on one hit in the first inning. The 30-year-old right-hander pitched in the big leagues from 2010-2015. He hasn’t pitched since May of 2015 because of a shoulder injury. He worked out for a couple of teams, but the Twins offered him a two-year deal with an invitation to major league spring training next year. Next, Henry Centeno gave up two runs on two hits and a walk in the next 1.2 innings. He struck out one. It was his second rehab appearance. He has missed the whole season so far with an elbow injury. Next in for the GCL Twins was 2017 draft pick Blayne Enlow. He recorded his first professional win in his longest outing so far. In 4.1 innings, he gave up one run on four hits. He struck out four and did not issue a walk. ‘ The final two innings were pitched by left-hander Kevin Marnon. He signed last week after pitching for the Birmingham/Bloomfield Beavers of the United Shore Professional Baseball League. The Ball State grad threw two scoreless innings. He gave up one hit and struck one out. The offense was led by Alex Robles who hit his fifth double and his third home run. He drove in four runs. Kidany Salva went 2-5. Ben Rodriguez was 1-3 with two walks. Royce Lewis went 0-2, but he walked three times and stole his ninth and tenth bases.
