  1. I find it interesting that literally no one commented about the type of pitcher Hughes is. Even at his absolute BEST, he gave up more than a hit per inning and had a decent, but certainly not great K rate. Kind of seems odd in this era of analytics. Like I said in other threads, the board I was on most often at the time no longer exists. So, I couldn’t pull up my thoughts even if I wanted too. But I know I was thinking that it didn’t say much about the organization’s opinion on their own highly touted pitching prospects. The reason this extension was done was because of the failure of the organization to develop almost any above average starting pitcher for more than 3 years over the previous decade plus. The only one was Scott Baker, who was BARELY above average in terms of ERA+. If a team can’t develop it’s own pitchers it is forced to overpay a Ricky Nolasco and over-reward a Phil Hughes.
  2. So, you make Reed the closer. Who pitches the 8th or the high leverage 7th inning? Rodney? Is that a better choice?
  3. Not very. I’m not impressed with Lynn at all. WAY too many non-strikes. Way too many meatballs.
  4. Maybe it’s a catch because the ground can’t cause a fumble.
  5. The Indians had not played since Saturday and also had a long trip before the game. What they didn’t have to do was face Corey Kluber and the Indian bullpen.
  6. How would drafting Prior over Mauer affected the acquisition of Santana, a rule 5 pick?
  7. Duke is looking like a more expensive version of Craig Breslow. Rodney looking like a more expensive version of Matt Belisle. If Rodney turns it around like Belisle did, I’ll be happy. However, not sure I want to suffer 3 months of horrendous pitching like Belisle gave the Twins last year.
  8. Unfortunately, it appears that Reed is the ONLY reliable arm out there. Pressly has done well, but after last year’s debacle, I’d be wary of trusting him in critical situations.
  9. So, to those that believe Reed should have entered the game in the 6th: Are you further suggesting that it would have been just fine to leave him in through the 8th? If not, what’s the alternative? If you have an alternative, I would argue that pitcher should be pitching in the 6th. You can’t burn Reed out in the first two weeks of the season unless you are prepared to be without him.
  10. The hitters that bat in the 6th are guaranteed another at bat. So, Correa was going to hit again. Point being I don’t consider the start of the 6th inning the most critical situation in last night’s game.
  11. You’re not going to bring Reed into the 6th inning. That’s silly. A gimmick pitcher like Hildenberger is always a gamble. Is he the next Pat Neshek or the next Mike Nakamura? You never know until he gets a chance. Given how well he dominated last year I would say he’s earned a little more rope. If he doesn’t turn it arround in 2-3 weeks, I would say it is time to try someone else. The bigger issue is Moya and Kinley. Molitor clearly has no intention of using either in a competitive game. Someone is going to have to go down to make room for Friday’s starter. If Falvine continues to hold on to Kinley, it will have to be Hildenberger or Moya.
  12. I’m trying to come up with a scenario where it makes sense to bring in Rogers to face Correa.
  13. Gotta know who’s pitching. The ump isn’t going to squeeze Verlander.
