Article: Twins Daily 2018 Awards: Most Improved
yarnivek1972 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Seems to be a bit of a dubious distinction. Hicks and Dozier were both out of the organization within 2 years of winning the award.- 24 replies

Article: Twins Manager Paul Molitor Fired
yarnivek1972 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Quote: This year's disappointing start led to a trade deadline selloff when the Twins were out of the race by mid-summer, but there had been very little speculation that a coaching change was imminent. John Bonnes is obviously not a regular reader of Twins Daily.- 284 replies

I still maintain Kepler’s “struggles” are extremely fixable. He has a ridiculously low career BABIP of .256 - that’s about .050 lower than league average. He has a 24% line drive rate, which is about 2% lower than league average and he hits ground balls at a slightly lower than league average rate. So, I have no idea what explains his BABIP. My hope is that someone employed by the Twins can. His walk and strikeout rates are both fantastic and are indicitive of someone who knows what he is doing at the plate, not just guessing and getting lucky. He doesn’t have Sano-Buxton “just swing at everything and hope I hit it” issues. He has a good deal of talent. Superstar? Probably not. Maybe fringe All Star. Something or someone will help him unleash it. I certainly don’t want to see him reach his potential elsewhere.

Article: MIN 9, DET 3: Vive La Tortuga
yarnivek1972 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Wouldn’t that be true of pretty much every hitter? You make contact, you have a chance. If you don’t, you’re out, unless you walk - which has value too of course. But there are very few Twins players (and all thru MLB for that matter) that wouldn’t benefit from more contact. I know the “3 true outcomes” is part of the new analytics but IMO it’s just a period that MLB is going through. Contact was valued before, it will be again.- 22 replies

What is the reasoning behind signing two veteran hitters (Cruz and Ramos) and then putting two rookies in the lineup, one of whom did very poorly at AAA the other has never even played at AAA? Seems like an inconsistent strategy to me. If you are rebuilding with Rooker and Gordon, what’s the point of signing veterans? If you are trying to contend, wouldn’t it make sense to put more established players in place of Rooker and Gordon? IMO, neither of those players sniffs the majors until June of next year, and that’s probably optimistic.

Article: First-Round Flops or Unfinished Projects?
yarnivek1972 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Is there such a thing as advanced fielding metrics for minor leaguers? I mean that Joe Public can look at. I’d be curious to know how Gordon stacks up. Is he a better fielding shortstop than Polanco? Than Lewis? Inquiring minds want to know. -
I think MLB would be better off eliminating the DH altogether. But, as you said, a discussion for another thread.

They need to find someone else to play first base whether or not Mauer comes back. This is his fifth season as the primary first baseman. He has played more than 100 games at first in a season just twice in those five years.

Mauer usually doesn’t play Sundays. Of course, the DH Friday and the lack of healthy position players makes it pretty likely that he will.

Article: Week in Review: Limping Home
yarnivek1972 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So, the Twins get to play a meaningless double header with a 4 man bench - 2 of which are catchers. Fantastic roster management. It would serve this organization right if they had a couple guys get hurt Friday and had to forfeit Saturday and Sunday because they have insufficient players.- 17 replies

Article: First-Round Flops or Unfinished Projects?
yarnivek1972 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As I have said for several years now: When a team can’t develop it’s own starting pitchers it is forced to do things like overpay Ricky Nolasco and over-reward Phil Hughes. Falvine’s model for sustainability needs to start there. -
Hard to audition anyone with 11 healthy position players. The guys that play are the ones they have, period.

1. Their BULLPEN is not good. Their rotation and lineup are light years better than the Twins. Wanna bet they remedy that this offseason? 2 & 3. More like 4 or 5 good ones are needed. 4. They would be better served finding roles for them. Maybe consider Romero for a relief role and see if he can blossom into a closer in a year or two. Stewart is probably better suited in a middle relief role as is Gonsalves. 5. Escobar isn’t better at ss than Polanco. 6. If Sano doesn’t develop into that guy, nothing else matters. The Twins won’t contend for the next 3-5 years if Sano isn’t a 5-6 bWAR player.

yarnivek1972 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Primarily because they have no one else to play short. With Sano out, Adrianza is at third. The only other choice is Petit. Also, I don’t think there would be much difficulty for Polanco going to 2b. He’s had extensive playing time there in the past in the minors and it’s the easier switch (as opposed to 2b to ss).- 17 replies

Having 11 healthy position players in September is what is inexcusable. That’s probably why there was an attempt to get them on the field. The bench is pretty lonely.- 17 replies

You answered your own question in the section I highlighted. 6 to 1 K to BB ratio. Kepler dropped his K rate from 20% to 16% and upped his walk rate from 8 % to almost 12%. Plate discipline and pitch recognition is one of the hardest things for young players to master. Discarding someone who pretty much has at age 25 would be beyond dumb IMO. Is there room for Kepler to improve? Certainly. But he proved this season with his improvement vs LHP that he is capable of making adjustments to improve. I’m not qualified to say what adjustment he needs to make to take the next step. Hopefully, someone employed by the Twins is. But the gifts and the talent and the “savvy” are clearly there. He has a 2.4 bWAR. That is a starter, not a 4th OFer.

Article: Across the Meadow: The Buxton Saga
yarnivek1972 replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There wouldn’t be any argument. He would have collected the entire year of MLB service time ftom the DL. Is that better? As for comments I have seen elsewhere, the Twins only “cheated” Buxton out of millions if he ever hits MLB pitching. Outside of August and September of 2017, he never has. 200 at bats out of over 1000 in his career.
