I think you hit the nail on the head with this analysis. Maybe it's rose-tinted glasses, but it didn't feel quite so negative on here even during the 2016 season. The success of the 2019 season definitely brought a large influx of new users to the site and I genuinely believe that the creators/writers/contributors deserve the level of success this site has achieved, but it's a bit of a double-edged sword as discussions have gotten considerably worse in my observation. Repetitiveness might be the most glaring issue, it would be one thing if we had these same arguments even once a week rather than seemingly every other day. I'm starting to feel like McConaughey in True Detective ranting about time as a flat circle, maybe I should just be crushing Lone Star like he does instead.

Math was never my strong suit, but a 43 game win swing for Rocco's managerial career would put his record at 295-164 or a 64% winning percentage, which over the course of a 162 game season averages to around 105-106 wins a year. But this is irrelevant because we can't be making up statistics and pretending that they have a basis in reality; Manager WAR simply doesn't exist.
-
Where are you getting that stat from? I'm actually curious because Manager WAR seems to be nonsense; how would you even determine what a replacement level manager is? How would you quantify both the on and off-field decisions that every manager makes? Also, you're telling me that a replacement level manager would be worth 43 more wins since 2019? That essentially equates to mean the Twins should have averaged winning 106 games a year, which seems an extraordinarily generous interpretation of the facts.

Game Score: Tigers 17, Twins 14
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The team scoring 14 runs after falling behind 10-0 shows that the team hasn't quit, at least from an offensive perspective. This is an abysmal pitching staff. At this point it seems like pick your poison and the question becomes less, "which guy gets us out of this jam" and more "which guy would you like to give up three runs in an inning today?"- 45 replies

Game Score: Tigers 6, Twins 5

I don't think any of us non-professional athlete keyboard warriors should be taunting players going through heat exhaustion. Something about glass houses... -
I get it, I think we just have different definitions of what constitutes, "wit." Personally, I prefer a level-head for a manager, let the players get fired up and emotional, but the manager needs to make the cool, rational choices. I don't know what to say about down and dirty, because I'm not sure what you're implying.
-
Definitely a mountain out of a molehill situation. This wasn't Bryce Harper and Jonathan Papelbon going after each other in the dugout. When you foster an environment that encourages a player's competitive drive this is going to happen, but all parties involved handled it well. Donaldson and Arraez got their say, Cruz mediated it, and Rocco focused on the game at large. Had this escalated to anything notable then coaches get involved. Can we just stop with this critique? Criticize Rocco for his lineups, or his defensive placements, or pitching management, but this is such a lazy take that it's all but worthless.

Game Recap: White Sox 6, Twins 1
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
All these, "boring" stats have existed for decades and teams have been using them for years. Now they have names, so a guy doesn't have "warning track power" we might instead look at ISO or a different statistic. If anything this can make it easier to understand the game for newcomers as it doesn't read like insider baseball information. Look at Earl Weaver being arguably the most famous example of a manager altering his lineup based on favorable matchups using slugging or on-base percentages. If you watch the game you should notice there are plenty of managers, Rocco included, who ignore what the "computer" says they should do quite often. I really don't understand this argument, if you don't like statistics just ignore them, RBI, batting average, and runs still exist in the stat line. It's not information that's making the game, "unwatchable" there are many other factors that have led to baseball's viewing decline.- 33 replies

Trading Josh Donaldson Is the Right Call

Game Recap: Royals 6, Twins 3
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think Rocco has been great this season, but it doesn't seem like you're giving him any credit for things he has done well. For one, he had a touching perspective on Buxton's injury that you should read https://www.startribune.com/byron-buxton-rocco-baldelli-share-a-history-of-injury-setbacks/600070980/. Two, I really don't understand how calling guys out publicly would help make matters improve. If you think there's a clubhouse problem, something I don't see any evidence for, then does anyone think it would be better by Rocco tattling to the media? He seems to have a good rapport with the players and they handle things internally, I see no issue with that approach. I don't want to come across as a Rocco stan here, because I'm not, but some of these feel like unfair accusations. -
Game Recap: Cleveland 4, Twins 1
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, he has a .668 OPS and an 81 OPS+ which means that Kirilloff and Larnach are hitting better than him in every category except RBI, so it's fair to say the corner outfield spots are doing well in the interim. Plus we got to see classic Eddie when he was thrown out walking back to second on an admittedly boneheaded play. Honestly who would you rather have in LF, Rosario or Larnach? The answer seems pretty straightforward. I agree that it seemed people were too eager to get rid of him and I like Eddie as a player and he seems like a good person, but this narrative that he was an irreplaceable bat and clubhouse leader just doesn't make sense. -
Game Recap: Mariners 10, Twins 0
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Because WPA takes the context of the game into account. A batter getting a hit in an 8-0 game has much less impact than that same batter getting out with a runner on base in a 3-0 or 0-0 game. Blowouts effectively negate WPA, as they should. -
Game Recap: Yankees 9, Twins 6
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't get these either, sure this team is absolutely frustrating but was nobody watching from 2011-2016? Those years with few good players and no quality prospects in the minors close enough to make any positive impact. I saw Yohan Pino pitch a game in person and thankfully we haven't hit that low yet. Be frustrated with this team, and feel free to criticize the many criticizable aspects, but let's be rational as well. Stop this, it's not going to happen, nor should it. What team would fire a manager coming off two straight division titles after a few admittedly bad months? An incompetently run team, that's who. I swear we're starting to sound like the Strib comments section on this site. -
Time for a Changing of the Guard
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They're probably not saying he has to remain in the rotation, but they are almost certainly saying he has to remain on the 26 man roster. If Rocco is lobbying the FO to keep him, you're right that's entirely the wrong decision. However, it's almost a pick your poison scenario, they'll never say it publicly but they don't trust him starting, but they also don't trust him in the bullpen either. That's a longwinded way to say it's a bad signing that for some reason this team seems reluctant to admit to. -
Time for a Changing of the Guard
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's almost as if Baldelli doesn't have complete control over who is on the roster and has to use the players he's given. So rather than trash talk one of his players he gives a non-answer. -
Agreed, also the Twins weren't going to let anyone else wear #7, even if they hadn't officially retired the number. There is no point in waiting 2-3 years for something that everyone knows is going to happen.

Article: The Brian Dozier Trade That Almost Was
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Unfortunately, the nature of sports where the ultimate goal is to win a championship brings disappointment more often than not. I love those '00s teams, but it's not too much of a stretch to call those seasons failures after only winning one playoff series. Sure, we had great moments and memories that we still appreciate, but they failed to accomplish their one main task. -
Article: The Joe Mauer Quagmire
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I definitely agree he needs to be playing less, but I don't think Mauer is holding back Palka or Park. The numbers Palka is putting up don't paint him as somebody who absolutely deserves to be in the Twins lineup. It's hard to say with Park being injured, with regards to how the front office will handle that situation. I should have been more clear with the A-Rod comparison. The Yankees dropped him for more reasons than just a bad contract, that's why the Mauer comp is not exactly feasible. This is far from a win-win scenario, but Mauer is going to be on the team through his contract. The team is still a business and Joe Mauer is good for marketing purposes. Not many of the Twins have name recognition to casual fans and stadium seats need to be filled. I think it's too early for the calls to perma-bench or release him. Vargas is getting at-bats, but is far from certain to keep hitting and unlike Mauer doesn't provide defensive proficiency. I hope Vargas keeps mashing all season, but it's no guarantee.- 104 replies

Article: The Joe Mauer Quagmire
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That won't and probably shouldn't happen. For one he isn't wasting a roster spot, who is being held back by Mauer being on the team? Comparing the Twins and Yankee payroll situation is illogical. Mauer is the only "bad" contract on the team, but this is still a billion dollar franchise. The Yankees had 5 players making over $20 million and 8 making at least $13, all while trying to go younger and cheaper. The Twins had Mauer at $23 and Santana at $13.5. Without even going into personal conduct, suspensions, attitudes, etc. the situations aren't at all similar other than production.- 104 replies

Article: Out With The Old
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sell high on most of these "old guys." Mauer isn't leaving, whether or not this is the right thing is irrelevant, it just simply won't happen. A hometown player, who has been the face of the franchise for a decade, with some impressive hardware is staying. Realistically this team still has to sell tickets and Mauer is a draw for the average fan. Santana should be shopped aggressively, how trustworthy is a 33 year old inning eater going to be from year to year? Aside from that this team is still at least a few years from contending for the playoffs and there is an even smaller chance he is relevant. Plouffe has to go, no other way around it, he just does not fit into the team construct anymore. Dozier is trickier, any offers shouldn't be ignored, but we shouldn't take anything just to clear up space. He has never had as much value as he does now, but the notion that he should switch positions for the Twins is wrong, OF or even 3B is a terrible idea. That is just asking to cut value and further muddy up the picture. -
Obviously record-wise this team takes the title of the worst Twins team. Talent wise you could make a reasonable argument that this year was better than some of the teams from a few years ago. What puts this team in this conversation is the atrocious pitching. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say this is the worst put together pitching staff the Twins have ever tried to roll out.

Article: Dozier's Case For American League MVP
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Dozier is probably around 6th or 7th in the AL. Fair or not, his slow start combined with how "well" the Twins have played has impacted people's minds. Wouldn't be surprised to see him get a few votes, but this has been Trout's MVP to lose for most of the season. Still an impressive season from Dozier and I hope he breaks the 2B HR record.- 65 replies

Article: Arizona's Cautionary Tale
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I imagine fans want to see a chain-of-command system like the D-Backs, with more than one person having input. Right now we're hearing that they are at least considering the right type of GM/President. The rumors are guys that have had successes and are competent in modern baseball practices. Even if they came from a bigger market, these guys have to understand that they aren't going to be given a blank check. Who knows, the Twins may pull the rug out from under everybody, but I don't see the team pulling any of the D-Backs moves anytime soon. -
Article: Santana Shines Among Sad Starter Group
TheBoofIsLoose replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A weak free agent market could maybe net them something of good value in a trade, but that doesn't seem too likely. Until Santana either drops off badly or takes starts away from somebody who deserves them getting rid of him just puts the team in an even deeper hole.
